Help my indecisive ass pick the right gaming laptop

Pay a little extra and go for the 5080 Legion. I know it's a painful amount of more money, but the upgrade is worth it.
It's not really that big of an increase considering OP was willing to get the other Legion from Best Buy which is only about $100 cheaper but only comes with a 5070 but comes in the fancy white color.

Lenovo usually gives the best price to performance ratio if you hunt around. I'd be tempted to get the 5090 Legion but I'm still fine with my current 4090 one from 2 years back. That and I bought an ASUS Z13 gaming tablet and I try to limit my big purchases to once a year.

My G14 isn't *that* loud tbh.

What's with all the Asus shills here?

Funnier part is half the thread seems to think an 8GB GPU couldn't even play Minecraft or whatever lol

Yeah it's gonna hit the VRAM limit if you're trying to run everything 4K @ Ultra settings. Given the laptop use case it's it's gonna be more than sufficient for 1080p @ high/med settings for a loooooong time

Anywho, my only input to OPs question: I owned an older gen Legion w/ 3060, was very well built and had no issues, would recommend. Never owned an ASUS.

I think in basically 2026 8GB is too limiting. And considering the cost that laptop is going to be around for 4-5 years. Might as well spend a few hundred $ more and get a bit better spec.

clarky clarky Hearing your positive experience with the even more powerful 5080 variant of the G14 has me feeling like the G14 5070 Ti is going to be the right choice for me.

Have there been any issues with BSODs, bugginess with ASUS stuff, or bad thermals/build quality problems?

I've owned a g14 and g16 both felt premium but 1) sounded as loud a jet plane and 2) got as hot as the sun

I probably wouldn't have minded the sound as much if they weren't so fucking hot

My thoughts

-I like that 16" screen. If I'm gaming on the laptop and not with an external screen then this matters. The Asus is higher rez even though it is smaller. I'd want to see them in person before I buy.
-240hz refresh on Legion is twice that of Asus
-I also like how Legion has the ports in the back whereas Asus puts them all on the side.
-12GB VRAM and 5070 Ti is a good upgrade.
-Think either CPU is fine
-Legion has full size keyboard and Asus does not

So really comes down to GPU vs screen in my mind. In the end, I'd probably go with the Asus if it were me.

I can tell you this. In my experience, both laptops are going to be loud as hell while playing a game.
He should get 12gb of vram inside of whatever he decides to get. It will bite that ass later if he doesn't.

If it's within the budget, get 16.
I cannot tag OP. After updating iOS the browser does all kinds of stupid shit and that prevents me from tagging anyone on mobile.

i said it in the first post that it the G14 had better thermals. most laptop sluts on youtube who do reviews all picked the 2025 G14 as their favorite 14"

It is a great laptop overall but 5070ti is limited to power and heat. Here for example same 5070ti on both but Strix gpu alone is giving some 20% more performance:

I had an issue with the laptop hard resetting every now and again when I got it but a Bios update appears to have cleared things up. I've owned a lot of laptops in my time and its up there with the best of them. The CPU isn't as good as I'd like (yet still no slouch) but the battery life when not gaming is fantastic, 8-9 hours on light tasks so its a fair trade off. I travel a lot for work so portability is a big factor for me and its unbelievable just how good it is for such a small package. Has LM on the CPU so temps are under 90 during heavy gaming.

I have the 5080 variant but that's over kill, its not much better than the model you are looking at. The 5070ti its the one to go for for sure.

If you are gaming with it on it on the TV then you will hear the fans, think PS4 pro loud and you get the idea, just something to consider. Same goes for any gaming laptop going full pelt though.

Like another poster said, remove armoury crate and install GHelper Its free and super lightweight, great bit of software. AC is trash.

It also doubles as a great "work" laptop as well.:messenger_winking:

That said if you are only gaming at home with it I really would think about getting a Mini-itx to stick behind your TV. You'll get a lot more bang for you buck.

I have one of these at home and its great.

I actually just uninstalled Armoury Crate and replaced it with G-Helper so that's already done lol.

How would that mini-ITX work with a laptop exactly? Sorry if stupid here 😵‍💫

I was meaning not getting a laptop at all and using a MIni ITX PC if you are only going to game at home with it. Just offering another option.

If you are dead set on a laptop then the 14 is a nice option for sure.

Sorry for the confusion.

My advice about gaming laptops is to avoid them if you only use them for gaming at home. Been there, worse gaming decision i ever made. From the heat, to the noise, to the less performance even if the card say its a 5070ti it does not perform like a desktop 5070ti, high price, lack of upgrade option. Its only a decent option for ppl that move alot. If its to play at home just build or find a store that can build you a desktop. Thers many options if you want a small size pc as well.

Yeah for someone who plans on only gaming at home then there are better options for sure.

The naming conventions used for mobile GPUs are one of the biggest scams in gaming. Most people who buy a laptop with a 5080 actually think they are getting a 5080.

In reality....

I just bought a Legion 7i Pro with a 5070ti from Micro Center a couple days ago to game on while I travel. It's a solid laptop.

Just had a couple matches on Battlefield 6 with the G14 and damn am I impressed! Maxed out at native 1800p resolution, this thing is running slightly cooler to me then the Legion 7i to the touch. The fan noise is about equal maybe, but I did use GHelper to turn off CPU Boost (which I read can skyrocket CPU temps needlessly) and set a more conservative temp limit for the CPU and GPU.

Wait, you got one already? Congrats.

You do not fuck around sir I salute you.

Check out the G14 sub Reddit lots of useful stuff on there, some nice fan curves for ghelper etc.

I already had both for testing (the G14 was received today and had the Legion for about 3 days), I'll be returning the Legion 7i tomorrow and keeping the G14. 😬

Thanks again to everyone for the replies/feedback!

You'll hit your thermal and power limit before you can ever fully max out the card..

The 5070ti is better in terms of power use in a laptop

The Legion laptops have the best cooling in the 16in class and are the most consistent of any of the manufacturers at delivering the maximum, Nvidia mandated 170w-175w to the mobile 5080 or 5090.

I like my 2022 G14, it's running 2 external monitors nicely while I'm home for the holidays like a champ. Gaming performance is okay for what it is. It's one of the all AMD models, no Nvidia. Not a fan of the Radeon and associated software. The Mediatek WiFi chip is garbo, and I stripped the screw holding it in while trying to upgrade it (RIP bozo). Also had occasional stability issues. It's got a pretty great look and feel though.

I'd consider another G14 for my next one, I'm sure they've ironed out some of the kinks. My old 17" Laptop was a little too big for travel purpose, but I think something in the 15–16-inch range might suit me.

I bought the 5060 version of the Legion laptop on sale from Bestbuy Canada two weeks ago, and so far it's been really great. Not really keen on 8gb video cards now but I'm like 95% AA/Indies/emulation at this point and things like DLSS does help with the rare times I play a higher end AAA( which is like, hardly ever nowadays). Hell I've spent the last year mostly gaming on the Legion Go( and I have a PS5), so this laptop is a SUBSTANTIAL leap from that. I had a Samsung 980 evo 1TB SSD laying around from an old gaming rig that I just installed yesterday. So for me it's been a great buy but it depends on your gaming habits.

Its basically one grade down (and in reality less due to lower power envelopes).

UPDATE: Sadly the Asus G14 Zephyrus started throwing up a ton of BSODs after roughly 10 hours of use. I initially thought maybe it was a driver update that caused it, but Driver Verifier didn't find any issues and the Event Viewer wasn't pointing to a specific driver as the cause of the BSODs either. In the end I ended up getting a Legion Pro 7i 16" with a 5080 as it's currently on sale (discounted to $2300 with promo codes):

Not trying to sway anyone away from the Asus as I probably just had really bad luck with the unit I got (and I enjoyed it a lot before the BSODs started), but I'd feel more comfortable with the Legion at this point.

That Legion looks great considering the specs!

G14 is God's gift to the world

Suck about your problems but the g14 was the go to in college and work even rn and is so fucking small and packs a massive punch

I would say go with the Asus because it has the juiced up GPU.

Now, I hear Asus stuff has heating problems. Check and see if people are complaining about the laptop a lot.

Also, the metal case is a great plus. It prevents the screen from getting damaged.

I got an Omen Transcend that is really nice. Runs everything I throw at it.

The fan is kind of loud sometimes. That is a common problem with laptops.
