Hi all,

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up that the FFXIV Online is free to download with a level cap of 60 and no time limit. I didn't know this so maybe some of you guys didn't know either. It seems to be pretty good, IGN rated it nr. 1 MMO at the moment.
Enjoy :)

And as always, if this is old news or useless information then close it, and my apologies.

Played it for a week or so.

Enjoyable game until you just realise how much work is ahead of you and the amount grind that it takes.

I cant help but feel like my entire enjoyment from an MMO or BR is that first 6 - 8 hours where you feel like you're so good at this game and you're "totally going to play this game in the long run" before you get to that point where everyone is just thousand miles ahead of you and I begin to question whether "git gud" is worth the time and effort.

That's where I got to with this game.

That is always the question, I guess MMO isn't for everyone.

Doesnt take away by how good of an MMO FFXIV is though!

I think if I had friends who were enthusiastic about MMO's I'd probably enjoy it a lot more.

But thanks for the informational heads up to anyone who wants to give the game a try!

Yeah, the game is basically Free to Play up until the end of Heavensward.

The way they are approaching this, they are "giving away" an older expansion every 1.5 years.

If you are patient enough, you will probably be able to play the game in its interity for free in some years.

Play on and off for years, if you ignore all the cat girls it's a pretty serious game.

Although my character looking like an angry onion detracts from that.

knocks on door

"hi, have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV with an expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn AND the award winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 for free with no restrictions on playtime?"

door slams shut.

all jokes aside, XIV is probably the best MMO out there right now in terms of value. so glad to see it's getting the recognition it deserves.

not a criticism or anything, but have you play some of the more grindy JRPGs before? just think of this as one of those but with a better story and some of the NPCs in there actually would talk back to you. I personally view XIV as a "life style" MMO. you play it to enjoy it however you want. want to grind and farm end game stuff? sure. want to kick back and do crafting and gathering only? no problem. want to just park your butt in the Gold Saucer (think of it as a in game Disneyland/casino) and play mini games all days? join in. I've been on and off the game since beta of 1.0 and there's still plenty of things I can try out and do. this isn't like some other MMOs where the end game is just to do whatever the latest highest difficulty stuff. all the old content in this game is still good and there are still people doing them. there are people who put tens if not hundreds of hours into fashion, housing playing music in-game and such just because they like it. and the game doesn't hold you hostage and force you to stay. if you feel you had already done all the things you want to do? go take a break and play some other stuff. the dev team actually want you to do it. the main take away point here is to not look at the path ahead of you as something you NEED to grind and NEED to catch up on. think of it as an journey of adventure that you can go on whenever and however you want.

Play on and off for years, if you ignore all the cat girls it's a pretty serious game.

so you're telling me you're MAD BECAUSE SMALL? :messenger_tears_of_joy: as a fellow Lalafell, I have the same glam for my DRG, only with a different spear. so, you can't really complain about being an angry onion when you knowingly picked the onion armor set :messenger_grinning_smiling:

I tried hard to like this game. A wow guild I was in got into it towards end of bfa. Between the weeb shit and 45min cut scenes they would have to pay me. I don't get the love for this game. Although the casino is cool.

Did they ever fix their stupid log in system? I did the trial on PlayStation years ago and can't log in anymore as I have a different system. The stupid mognet stuff isn't clear either.

This game had the worst account management bs ever.

I bought the last expansion and got stuck on the MSQ because my character is a healer and I had to heal a really tough dungeon to make progress. My skill level isnt quite cutting it, got a decent amount of abuse for being shit and couldnt be arsed to level a DPS to get through it. Shame as the new area was cool and I was looking forward to seeing what the expansion had to offer, but it left a bad vibe with me and I've not been back since lol

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I love this game and the trial is indeed generous. However, it comes with a few other caveats: you cannot sell items in the in-game market (economy) and you cannot form parties (although you can join if a paid member invites you). There are also several expansion classes that you cannot get, although I suppose that's to be expected since they're, you know, typically locked behind paid expansions.

what is it you seek from a MMO? just to kill stuff without any context? I mean, if you're from WOW than you must be trying to find something new right? well, a good story sometimes take some setting up. so maybe give it a chance and let the story unfold first? and let's stop calling stuff "weeb shit" like it means something. by that extend, ppl can (and had) call WOW cartoony or furry shit too, and they would be totally wrong. it's all a preference thing. there's plenty of good and bad stuff on both sides of these style. and at the end of the day, if it still doesn't click with you, there's always a whole ocean worth of other games out there.

edit: perfect timing from Bellular

yeah, SE definitely isn't the best in regards these accounts and launchers stuff. you should feel lucky that you don't have to deal with the FFXI POL launcher thou. now THAT is a real pain in the ass. compare to XIV, what we have right now is really great already :messenger_tears_of_joy:

hmmm, which part of the MSQ are you on? usually if you let the party know you're new or not very good with whatever role you're playing, people usually would be pretty forgiving. there are of course assholes anywhere and XIV is no exception. but at least from my experience, there much less of them here. all I can say is give it another go and try talking to the party you're in if you are having a hard time.

yeah, the market board restriction is mostly there to prevent gold farmers to screw up the game's economy. also, you can't play as the Vierra (bunny folks), and the Hrothgar (lion folks) in the trial. to be honest, I'm surprised that they allow people to play Au Ra (dragon folks) since they're from Stormblood if I remember correct.

I played to half way through heavansward. The story was not for me. It didn't get better. If a game has to tell me to go to the bathroom and get a drink because this cut scene is about to take 45mins. It can fuck off.

I'm not looking for any games atm I'm happy. I just wanted to discuss my issues with it. The game is not for everyone. It's cool you like it I'm glad. I don't.

The free trial version is easily hundreds of hours of content. Great game, finally thinking about actually buying it soon. It's on sale on Steam

oh I totally agree it's not for everyone. the narrative it takes does require some getting used to in some cases. but I feel that if one were to actually invested into the story, the story transition of going from ARR to Heavenswards alone would hit really hard. hell, even just doing the Coils of Bahamut story is really awesome too. but again, to each their own. there's no problem if it doesn't fit everyone. plenty of other great games out there after all. thou I would still remain firm on the position that XIV has the best free trial of all MMOs currently on the market in terms of both story and gameplay.

to be honest thou, I would recommend NOT to use the Steam version. simply because the regular PC version and the Steam version are two different things in terms of way to purchase and upgrade. like, if you play the Steam version, and there's a sale on the physical box of an expansion on sale, you won't be able to use it on your Steam version. you HAVE to buy the Steam version expansion on the Steam store. but outside of that, everything else are the same and shared

oh yeah. I'm just talking about regular PC version (Windows version) and Steam version won't be compatible when it comes to expansions and stuff. outside of that, everything's fine.

for those who's into WOW, here's Jesse Cox's newest video with a pretty in depth comparison between the 2 games. very well written and definitely warrant a watch if you're interested in the subject.
