Markus from GamingTech received early access to try out an upcoming update for the Switch to enable HDR support:

Summary:

- HDR support coming to Nintendo Switch via a firmware update in the near future. (It's unclear from the video whether there will be one or two separate firmware updates for each subscription model.)
- Access to HDR is available via two subscription models. The first is called 'HDR Plus' which will cost $16 per month and is usable only in portable mode on the Switch OLED. The second will be 'HDR Super Plus' which will cost $29.99 per month and will enable HDR support for the Switch OLED in portable mode and when docking the Switch to an HDR capable TV.
- HDR content in portable mode is limited to 47 minutes per day. Markus speculates that the time restriction is due to burn in concerns on the OLED Switch.
- Nintendo are able to update any game to support HDR, but it seems that most games will not support it immediately. Metroid Prime Remastered is the first game to support it.

My reaction too. Seriously Nintendo? This is like paying a subscription to unlock the GPS in your car despite it already being there.

If Nintendo is worried about Burn-in then im really curious what sort of display they are using. Modern OLED's are designed to be highly resistant to Burn In (technically luminance degradation where a pixel weakens and cant display a certain color as well anymore. Traditional Burn-In is a CRT thing) and does that mean they're using a really cheap one?

Nintendo are able to update any game to support HDR

That's not how that works. A game has to be programed to take advantage of HDR otherwise its just oversaturating everything for the sake of oversaturating. Also IIRC the OLED switch has a max brightness of ~350 nits which isn't even basic HDR. Even if it technically has the ability to output HDR certified content now (OLED upgraded HDMI to 2.0. Original just had 1.4.)

(edit). I cant find anyone else talking about it. Are we sure this guy isn't just talking out of his ass?

Yep, some commonsense should have alerted me to the silly things said in the video :messenger_grinning_sweat::messenger_grinning_squinting:. I guess I just believed that Nintendo would be mad enough to do something like this lol:messenger_tears_of_joy:

If this is true it is ridiculous.

Pretty fucking genius. Also the fact that so many people fell for it demonstrates: 1) how well the video was made (good job keeping a straight face) and 2) that everyone thinks Nintendo is an extremely greedy company that loves to nickel and dime (it's true they do).

Come on, if you’re gonna do April Fool’s, at least wait til April 1st.

The good April Fool’s jokes are ones that are at least semi-realistic. Nintendo would never put something like HDR behind a paywall 🙄
