God of War on PC - Digital Foundry Tech Review

And these people call themselves such PC enthusiasts, yet they get all brain broken just to war.

I don’t disagree that the PC has the best version plus it’s settings allow it to run on a wide range of hardware. But there is no PS5 version of the game. It’s the developers fault that they didn’t make a native version because that would allow them to do more with the game on PS5. Not saying it will be better than the PC version but some improvements like removing CBR( done in Death Stranding) or improving load times (Death Stranding and FF7R) could be done. But as I mentioned earlier it’s up to the developers to give us that.

my gosh ..why don't give up master? there is not always an excuse for everything. It is also okay to accept things as they are and see the reality of the facts. We have a version of the game that has a number of improvements and that run doesnt it matter which "port mode" just better ...the same game no matter what and how runs worse and without improvements on the ps5. The fault is certainly not of the players but of software or console design if it cannot exploit the potential hardware or if unlike other hw it needs a different code to run. Things are as they are and will continue to be unless Cerny or Sony change the way the PS5 performs BC

Lmao

Not seen such retarded takes since the next-gen spec thread. Good times

The second argument is not invalid. People do rush out to buy consoles for exclusives.
I got 360 for gears of war and gta4 initially.
I got PS4 for bloodborne and the last guardian. This decisions were made only after learning this games do not come out on pc.
I think you might have missed what that point was arguing. It was meaning that someone who mostly exclusively plays on a PC who has made the decision to not buy a PS4 to play GoW who then after three years of waiting plays it on PC is not then suddenly gonna have a awakening and buy a PS5 to play the sequel, that doesn't happen at all or in massive numbers like console exclusive players think.

They've waited before, they'll wait again, because while waiting their are a ton of other games to play which I think is lost on some people. Someone who has spent $2000+ to build a PC is okay with waiting a few years for a 20+ hour experience but isn't gonna turn around to buy a $500 box for the same when it's more than likely only gonna be used solely for that reason.

Options are good for this reason, different strokes for different folks and all that.

It'll always be dumb that the obvious has to be stated but it never fails people come in here with drive-by comments that make no sense.

People saying "the differences aren't that noticeable lulz" pretend as if people are running out to build a PC exclusively for God of War. How about its just another way to play an amazing game that just so happens to now be the best way to play it no matter how big or small the differences may be?

Also assuming such a argument above is as dumb as assuming PC players are gonna rush out to buy a PS5 to play Ragnarok, that also isn't happening. Cause again PC players care about improvements even when to you they may be insignificant.

It will be funny though when Ragnarok launches on PS5 cause I can guarantee you any graphical improvement will be gushed over as the greatest achievement in videogame entertainment history.

Until the port comes to PC that is...
This 100%. It's called "I see only what I want to see". I've seen gamers declare the PS4 version of GoW was better looking than any PC game - even now some still believe that *any* PS exclusive that comes out will temporarily become the best looking game of all - until the PC version comes out - and then it's no longer special anymore because they are looking forward to the next exclusive.

Eventually day-and-date releases will happen with Sony exclusives and then all of this war shit will be over.

Of course, but if you change a game that radically, basically make a completely new game, why not change the title and protagonist all along? That's all that's missing here, ditching the old name and Kratos in favor of completely new series, and no one would bat an eye.
The title is just as important as the game. The idea was to transform "Kratos" not just the game from who he was in the previous games. If they called the game a different title then it would be just another dude in this new game. Kratos is an established character with a story and seeing the change in him and his struggle adds to the lore of the character himself.

Also, this has made the franchise stronger than it has ever been at close to 20 million in sales now.

It’s kind of funny how some people don’t recognize that the game was a originally made for the PS4. But that’s also the case with all last games unless they were developing the current gen version at the same time.

I get it that it sucks that GoW only has a frame rate unlock on PS5 but it’s the fault of the developers for not making a native version that pushes the hardware more.

I thought that, too. But there comes a point where you care more about that technical stuff than wheter you're having fun. Digital Foundry has been telling me for so long how my Xbox One is shit, and I let that cloud my enjoyment of it. Now that I completely disregard these aspects, I'm having way more fun gaming. It really feels liberating to not care.
Oh yes, I agree. Once it affects your enjoyment it becomes a detriment to the hobby.

Both the PS4 and the PS5 use x86. I don’t see what your point is.

It's all on Sony for not properly leveraging this common, shared architecture, which was already shown when Pro launched and games ran the same as on the base model, unless patched. They just need to sort this thing out if they want to be more effective when it comes to cross-gen, mid-gen and PC compatibility.

That's just one side of the coin tho, the other is all the fanboys who spawned infinite amount of "INSTANT loading!", "NO loading times!", "no bottleneck design" etc. posts for a good year right after the "Road to PS5" presentation, it's exactly those same people who now desperately try to find an excuse whenever that's not the case at all, "but but but! it's BC not native!", "there's no PS5 version of the game!" and so on, like, who gives a shit, that's how the hame runs on PS5, deal with it.

So whenever someone mentions that a game loads faster on PC/XB, you just know damn well it's a poke/jab to all those "onboard engineers" and their BS, and like Todd Howard said - "it's just works!", they immediately show up to defend their beloved plastic box and their theories. Maybe some day people will learn not to take as granted something that hasn't been even shown yet, maybe.

But anyway, maybe Sony will port GoW to use PS5 full potential, maybe there will be a DC version somewhere around summer to refresh the game before Ragnarok, I can definitely see Sony doing it, they just need to figure out how/where to extend the content, something like new game + and new weapons/costumes like in older games would be cool.

I mean... maybe not everyone is as stubborn as you think?
I know pc gamer are stubborn assholes who spent 2k usd on a pc and don't want to think about spending 200usd for a console to play a game and prefer to wait 10 years for pc port...
But there must be some people who will buy ps5 for horizon or ragnarok. Maybe they have weak pc or maybe they will love god of war so much, they can't wait for a seqiuel.
I have 2k usd pc.... but I was happy to buy a ps5. There is a place for both.

I know it’s how the PS4 version runs on the PS5 and I already accepted that. I really hope the developers come out with a native version that will make the game even better on the PS5. There’s plenty of both on both systems that native versions can add a lot of nice upgrades such as improved loading or the elimination of CBR.

Unfortunately I don’t believe anything else will be done with GOW and the frame rate unlock is the most that we will get. Unfortunately this situation is true on the other platform that has better BC implantation. Unless Sony and Microsoft make developers take into account future hardware we will be stuck with the games only getting basic improvements compared to someone upgrading their hardware on PC for example.

Who gives a shit its 60fps thats the best they could give you. You guys are too much on graphics. If the game is shit no graphics will save it.

I think it’s more of its what they wanted to give us. I believe they could have done better if they really wanted to. The frame rate unlock is nice but a native version could have given us more features like removing CBR or improving the load times.

Regardless the game is still fantastic despite that.

You know pc has other uses right? And what PC cost $2k? You mean those rich guys, that made pc expensive right?

normal pc are around $500 to $1k. And most pc gamers are busy with other games, that doesnt exist on consoles.

People that want to play games at their very best have those expensive PCs. But if your trying to build one for gaming at 500$-1000$ these consoles are usually the better buy.

Normal pc 500? what ?!
You can't even buy 1060 for 500.
Pc's were always expensive. Even before all this bs now. It was 2k usd in good times. Now You don't get top of the line for 2k usd.

not bad. Prices are slowly coming down. That pc should still be cheaper. It's kinda crappy.
I don't see a lot of reason to play on pc weaker than consoles for 2-3 times more.
of course except all the indies and customization

yeah, i wish it was a little bit cheaper.

My pc was 500$ when I bought it, but now, it seems to be struggling. I would need to upgrade it, but the upgrade cost is higher than, that pc.

found cheaper one.

but the parts are not premium, aside of rtx 3060.

From my personal experience, people buying gaming PCs also need it for other things.
Most don't really care about the whole 4k/120fps/ultra thing, its just convenient for the device they use on a frequent basis to be also able to play some games.

Not to mention if you need a PC in the first place, getting a laptop with a GTX 1650 will still be much cheaper than a decent PC + next console. "Oh but the new consoles are much more powerful-" they don't care. It can play Genshin Impact, Civilization, CSGO, some cool coop game for friends, etc; all at good settings and performance.

I've maxed everything and am running DLSS quality at 4k and it's super smooth. I can make concessions to hit 4k120 at all times but runs at 100fpa average.

Amazing port in my eyes.

So yeah, the PC version is better, if you have a good PC (which is pretty much impossible to get right now, at least at reasonable prices). But honestly, I feel that the improvements from the higher settings are overall pretty minor considering how much more raw power they take to run.

Now hold on, you lost me here.

PS5 running a PS4 version is bc mode.

But pc running a PS4 port is native?

And you say the twisting is astounding?

Talk about self insight.

Are you legit serious mate?

Having bo_hazem as your only like makes me believe it's just a meme reply. Please let it be.
Are you legit serious stupid?
I'll explain it in PC baby speak for you!
The PS5 runs the game in PS4 Pro mode with unlocked framerate. The PS5 is basically emulating the PS4 Pro. The game code hasn't been changed in anyway.
The PC version is running native code. A port of the PS4 version with improvements and enhancements like DLSS.
Or do you think your PC is running PS4 code natively?

Found this benchmark of all PC GPUs at PS4 settings.

Those numbers look great until you realize the 6800xt is a 20 tflops card with a 50% IPC gain over the original PS4 offering essentially 15x more power over the original PS4 GCN gpu.

The boost you are getting is less than 6x. The 2070 Super and the 5700xt shows just how poorly this game performs on AMD cards, but the 2070 Super should be able to do far better than just 115 fps using PS4 settings at 1080p.

NX Gamer's 2070 sits at 70% utilization at higher framerates because the game is CPU bound and his ryzen 2700 is a shit CPU, but that is a very interesting comparison because that CPU is roughly equivalent to the PS5 CPU in terms of performance.

maybe the jaguar cores were a decent choice for ps4

im glad these ps4 equivalent settings exist. with these, we can expose how badly performance efficient the majority of PC ports are. over the years i've died on several hills with this battle because of the muh "coNsOLE UsE lOwER thAN lOW setTtiNgS, YOu CannoT ImiTatE tHAT oN pC" argument. this argument died with hzd/gow practically.

rx 580, a gpu with peak gcn 5.0 achitecture that has 6.1 tflops cannot even push 2x FPS over PS4 despite having a clear 3x tflops advantage. its pretty egregious. same goes for gtx 1060 which should be at least 2 times powerful than a PS4 (and used to be, in its golden age period between 2016-2018. and then nvidia abandoned it. its practically "run your ps4 games at 50 fps with ps4 settings" gpu now.

exposition is good. but it wont change anything anyways. pc will always have to brute force. its just that i hate people that are unable to admit this fact.

DLSS is overrated and doesn’t look nearly as good as native resolution. It sharpens the image and adds all kinds of artifacts. People who claim it looks “better” than native 4K are drinking some serious Kool Aid, such a nonsensical comment.
This is true. Whats funny is that with every DLSS patch, it somehow gets better even though it was already the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now all of a sudden it had severe ghosting artifacts that needed fixing?

I tolerate it because native resolutions kill my framerate and im ok with a slight downgrade in image quality vs going all the way down to 1440p, but its definitely not as good as native, let alone better.

Mostly agree. I think the vast majority of PC ports are fine. There are always going to be outliers and both Horizon and GOW are those games. Both are CPU bound as they should be given they were designed around shitty jaguar CPUs but there is no question they are bad PC ports because they did not optimize the game for better CPU architectures. it's a straight port that is basically using the better CPUs to brute force the game.

I play most games on my 11.5 tflops RTX 2080 at high settings. I never have issues like ive had playing horizon. Enabling ray tracing destroys my framerate but thats expected. The moment I turn it off, i start to get great performance even from notoriously bad performers like Control and Cyberpunk. Just recently, I was running the Mafia remake at max settings at native 4k 45 fps while driving around. On medium settings, its way above native 4k 60 fps. Like most games I play. Same goes for Forza. Extreme settings, native 4k 45 fps. If i was using OG xbox settings, i would be getting almost 90 fps at native 4k. Just like what I would expect from my GPU and CPU combo. Thats a good port. Halo on the other hand.....

These are just bad ports. They need nixxes and not some studio with 4 people to port these games.
