I think that's still a thing, yeah.

Remember early PC days too when joypads plugged into the sound card if you didn't have a dedicated 'game port card'?

Funnily enough the NES had this problem worse than the Famicom did, not sure why.

I remember that I played Shinobi 2 and 3 so much I could literally complete them both with literal 0 damage, no lightning shield used... very literally NO HIT the entire game.
Shinobi original arcade edition only. But who uses clocked as a term formfinish. I still use clocked to this day

Oh the ARCADE Shinobi. Ok shit, that one was just flat out brutal.

Also I used to use 'clocked' up until mid 2000's then realized ppl were head tilting, and switched to 'finished'.

Oh god, yes, EMS boot disks...

There was a small period, four years or so, where the fighting game communities would openly refer to someone getting soundly beaten as being "raped". Lots of forums putting their collective foots down eventually put an end to it.

That's both hilarious and potentially horrifying. XD

Came here to find the autoexec.bat reference and wasn’t disappointed. And don’t forget config.sys and game .ini files!

Quakenet, a video gaming oriented IRC network.

In the first half of the 00's, it was averaging +200 000 connected users, +200 000 channels, +50 servers.
today, it's around 11 000 users, 10 000 channels, 30 servers.

200+ page physical manuals.
No time for that tutorial shit back then. Better to read a fucking book to understand the games mechanics.

Don't miss those tbh.

Ah, never had that one unfortunately. I had a NES to begin with and saw ads in the paper for the C64 and was like WOAH!... It was absolutely mindblowing at the time since it was my first real 'computer'.

Hell, just typing 'LOAD "game" ,1' made me feel like a badass hacker :messenger_grinning_sweat: The day I could actually type 'LOAD "game",8,1' instead made me feel like Grand Wizard of the Cosmos. (,8 means load from first device, usually the disk drive).
Actually ,8 for the first argument was for the disk drive. ,1 was the default which was the Datasette. The second argument ,1 meant load it into the correct area of memory instead of the area reserved for Basic (which was default). Clever developers would load code into the interrupt area of memory so their game would auto-run without having to SYS anywhere (or having your Basic loader do it). Cartridges of course loaded at startup.

Oh my! I remember the manual for Joint Strike Fighter, detailing every technical detal and possible maneuver you coul do with the aircrafts!
It was a 150+ page booklet, all in color, and it was awesome

Bruh.

Not sure if its still around or not but WoW used to make it so you had to log out in a safe place like an inn. It was the modern ver of 'rent'.

I was talking more about rentals. I never played World of Warcraft. Not a big fan of MMOs
