Just from looking at them, it’s clear that Microsoft and Sony’s respective business models couldn’t be more different if they tried, with the latter company’s approach often winning out. One seeks to build up a vast library of games, while the other prioritizes its work with a handful of prized developers. Sony manages to drive sales of its PlayStation consoles by cultivating beloved exclusives from such studios as Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games. This tendency for Sony to prevail in the console market through reliance on its first-party studios goes back years, being most prominent during the early days of the eighth console generation.

In the past, Sony’s high-caliber exclusives helped the PlayStation 4 sprint ahead of its competitor, the Xbox One. While Sony focused on delivering compelling games with boundary-pushing technology and exciting narratives, Microsoft centered an all-purpose entertainment system. Consumers were not keen on a deprioritization of games and gravitated toward Sony’s console. Of course, Sony’s solid strategy and gains during the eighth generation could never outright stop Microsoft from finding its footing, given enough time.

Microsoft may have been slow to pivot to a new business strategy, but once they did the Xbox brand was all the better for it. Recognizing their mistakes with the Xbox One’s launch, Microsoft sought to ensure a steady path forward by placing veteran employee Phil Spencer in charge of the Xbox division. Spencer, in turn, would guide Xbox towards crucial decisions like shifting away from anti-consumer policies and shaping the Xbox Series X/S around the idea of bringing gamers into the future. Such bold advances in company policy stand in stark contrast to the current state of Sony and its PlayStation brand.

Whereas Xbox has started to embrace the direction in which game consumption is headed, PlayStation remains wedded to its traditional business tactics, the flaws of which grow more apparent with each passing day. As mentioned, PlayStation, and by extension Sony, chose to emphasize the efforts of a small number of AAA studios in order to dominate the console market. Unfortunately, this strategy has had the downside of downplaying and marginalizing Sony’s smaller developers, thereby affecting the variety of games and the value of Sony’s broader catalogue. The problems at Sony run deeper than just stubborn adherence to tradition, however.

Wtf is going on with the gaming media lately.

What are these "flaws that are growing more apparent" for Sony?

What is this vast library of games Xbox has? They have so very very little. Quit pointing to buying studios that have produced zero so far. Have they learned nothing from how MS has managed Rare? Remember when everyone thought Nintendo was insane for letting Rare go? Who came out of that deal looking smarter?

These stories are completely nuts. Consumers want fun games. It's why Switch dominates. It's why PS has a great reputation and has also dominated the landscape for many generations. Games, games, games.

Sony's strategy hasn't changed. The best games they can produce with solid hardware.

How long can these articles continue while PS5 keeps pulling ahead of Xbox S/X? Are we going to be three years into this with the competition basically being over and people writing "You know ... that Sony strategy is looking increasingly flawed. They might be in trouble!"

Ridiculous beyond belief.

or you know there is no vast conspiracy against Playstation and people are genuinely upset at the direction Sony has taken recently.

Where there is smoke, there is fire and theres been a lot of smoke around PS lately.

Thats exactly what it is. All the big software is delayed to who knows when, halo infinite probably wont live up to the hype. Im still adament that these big Bethesda blockbusters will be timed exclusives at best despite Phils vague "Honor Legacy Content" comment, whatever thats even supposed to mean.

MS is your friend guys.
Xbox is your friend..

Especially when they tried to double down on XBL fee membership last year...( they tried to push gamepass ultimate on everyone)

And then backpedal latter on after the negative reaction on social media ...but these journos...nobody seems to remember or bother to write a story about that...

Anyone remember that? Peperidge farm remember...

It is absolutely coordinated against Sony and PS5 along with all the Jim Ryan stuff. Xbots are working overtime on this and they are acting like they are on top of the world right now.

It's even working on some of our Sony regulars here.

Same thing happened before and after the start of last gen. From PS4 will be 30% underpowered vs xbox, to Power of the Cloud, to buffing up and praising always online.

And again, the same reactions were "Sony silence is deafening" "Sony not talking means they're in trouble"

In reality, Sony were just sat back laughing their arses off, readying up hit after hit after hit.

Not only that, this supposed bankrupt company with an underpowered console launched a f*cking VR headset!!!!!

What were Microsoft doing? Shilling about how good the xbone was, while quitely dismantling always online, 3 OS's (memba that?) Kinect 2.0

If history repeats like it is doing, Sony is about to drop an absolute stonkingly good piece of news and MS are trying to soften the impact by making the ground hostile as possible.

Weve seen the Discord screen shots where xbox fanboys were coordinating with someone from Digital foundry when they were pushing power as the end all be all narrative. Now that the power difference is negligible and the heavy hitters are delayed until like 2024 theres been a nonstop coordinated effort from twitter astroturfers to youtube influencers questioning if playstation has a future because a rental service got a day one AA game and a baseball game deal beyond sonys control will be day one on a rental service. Has sony made some missteps and couldve done things a better? Absolutely.

Nah I've been following gaming media for 20 years and this is paid for propaganda from a competitor I know a smear campaign when I see it.
Do you think Sony shutting down Japan Studios and letting MLB The show go to Gamepass is also part of this smear campaign? Are Sony themselves involved in this smear campaign?

What news? Jim Ryan resigning? That would do it.

Glad you’re better and it’s good to have you back!
The fud has gotten worse I’m afraid.
yer, I don't mind a couple of negative things here and there, that's par for the course with any company but it's been like a waterfall of late.

I think we need a mega thread with Sony is doomed to be created, imagine how many thousands of pages its gonna reach. "lollipop_disappointed:

Thing is Microsoft /Xbox have literally done nothing of any note, Sony are hanging themselves 😅 Incredibly bad decisions have been made over the last few years by the powers that be at PS and its just all coming in now 🤔 Phil must be laughing his ass off as he hasn't had to lift a finger 🤣

Lol yes exactly.

Also it’s almost like there’s documented evidence of Microsoft using astroturfing dating back to at least 2001, with ms being literally one of like 3 companies with an entire section about their use of it under the Wikipedia entry for astroturfing.

Almost like Microsoft is 10 billion deep on Xbox in just a couple years and is upset to still be playing third fiddle behind Sony and Nintendo.

Like it or not of the two next gen consoles Xbox has the biggest library. Sony def. has some better exclusives, but Xbox had more than it's fair share of great exclusives too, and you can go back and play 20 years worth of games on Xbox, the same can't be said for PS5.

Another day, another drama. Seems like MS is in full force trying to push a narrative that make them look good in the moment, which is a smart strategy, obviously nothing wrong here. The problem, here at least, is the annoying fanboys are constantly creating threads to defend their company, spreading rumors and praising some decisions made by the company as the best thing ever. It works for every fanboy, doesn't matter the company. But there isn't a single thread where people can discuss the news or rumors in an adult way, sharing information and believes. Very, very tiring, honestly.

Before someone ask, I'm still here because it is the easiest place to connect to the gaming news world.

I agree. I even said the same in another thread -- though many just laughed at me. This has a smear campaign written all over it. I'm not saying MS is behind it, but this is a coordinated effort to make PlayStation and Sony look bad.

First, it was the PS5 underpowered, RDNA 1, 9.2 TF, no-raytracing hardware. Then it was a 30% Xbox difference. Then it was Xbox tools are coming which will lead to a 40-50 FPS difference. Then it was the 2021 Xbox games (which there is no big one at the moment, except Halo Infinite).

Now it's Sony's poor management (which is helping the company break records in the gaming industry at every turn), and Sony's focus on big AAA games (as if that's a bad thing! MS wishes it could make big successful AAA games like Sony), completely ignoring smaller titles that Sony back, e.g., Sackboy, Destruction All Stars, Kena, Godfall, Little Devil Inside, Dreams, Concrete Genie, etc.
