Games that you love with levels that you hate

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
This post is amazing. It's the classic "Press Alt+F4 for unlimited ammo" from the Cs:S days.

I once got mad with the ox when I was a Two-handed fighter at level 100+ and accidently killed the OX, three quarters of the way to Gran Soren and had to restart.
It works I swear! You just have to hit the ox a little bit, avoiding his total annihilation.

The entire RPG is getting in my way of enjoying my favorite card game: Gwent

Thronebreaker is a legit great RPG.

Super Mario World's Donut Plains 2.
Every time I start a new game, there's a 50% chance I'll stop there.
The stage is an autoscroller - a very slow one, and there are sections where it slows down even more.
It's too straightforward without any real challenge other than staying awake.
And to make things even worse, the stage has to be done a second time to access the secret exit.

I agree that it is a boring level. Too save yourself from tedium just take the secret exit both times to skip half the level. The pipe in the secret room leads to the normal exit.

Hmmm. Let's see.

Metroid Prime 2 - Torvus Bog/Dark Torvus Bog
Specifically the Sunken section. Samus moves like ass underwater in this game, and the Dark Alpha Blogg is possibly the stupidest boss in the trilogy.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica/X - Private Residence
That dumbass pseudo mansion the Ashfords have with padded walls that look they stripped all of the trolleys in old school London. Place is full of ass bats, ass zombies, and what can only be described accurately as a gangbang of Bandersnatch.

Kingdom Hearts - Deep Jungle

Water Temple, Ocarina in Time. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, it's the king of bad levels in an excellent game.

It's super linear and easy, though.

All you have to do is, immediately after entering for the first time, drop into the water, go into that hallway with the big stone block, and pull it out. Then every time you raise the water level, just make rounds to the rooms available. It's that simple.

They might do one more trick, it's been years since I've played, but it's pretty straightforward as long as you pull that block first.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Springhill Zone.

Yeah Labyrinth Zone can be a nightmare but it’s a nice challenge, especially the boss.

But Springhill Zone? Waiting for blocks to move, springs.

Casino zone as well is a bore pinging away trying to get to the end.

Also in Gran Turismo…. I can’t remember the track name but it’s the Night one in the city (both long and short)… I would be able to do the endurance race without breaking when I was younger as it was quicker to just slide along the barriers at the corners…

That's one thing about CVX that is kind of lost on general audiences. The lighter should honestly be equipped at all times unless you're actively fighting an enemy. But yea, CVX will punish the hell out of you, many times unfairly due to poor game design.

The key to the residence is to utilize the lighter, it keeps bats away. But you also have to do the medicine side quest and if you do it too late/early, it can screw you a bit with other uses of the lighter. I gave the medicine too early one time and died cause of the bats. I also waited too late one time and the game prevented me from delivering the medicine to the prison guard. Even doing the right thing with the lighter will make the game tougher for you. As Claire in Antarctica, the power is off when you first get there and if you did the medicine side mission, you won't have the lighter. The area is so insanely dark while you're trying to turn the power back on. If you have the video settings where they should be, you'll pretty much only see the glowing eyes of the zombies and have to navigate obstacles blind and hit X on walls to hopefully find a door, lol. Even finding the power switch involves navigating a maze of sorts and there are dogs in the room. Even after that, you have no idea when you should put the lighter/weapons in the storage bin cause the game doesn't give you an indication on when it's gonna transition to Chris or vice versa.

There's also the hard locks you can effectively get yourself in. Most notably the Tyrant plane fight, Alexia fight w/ Chris, Monster Steve with Claire. I absolutely adore the game, might be my 2nd favorite OG RE title but it's incredibly sloppy in some areas.

On a side note, Bandersnatch's need to be handled with explosive arrows.

Dark Souls - Lost Izalith. The floor is lava, dragon butts (technically they're called bounding demons) are everywhere, there's a very distinct possibility that you killed your favorite Sunbro, and really, the area just feels like it was an afterthought. All of this leads to the Bed of Chaos, which is one of the most poorly designed From Software boss fights. My least favorite part is that it's so close to the end.

Mega Man 2 - Skull Castle stage 4. Worst music in the game after one of the best tunes in chiptune history, plus horrible level design and a totally obnoxious boss fight.

Super Mario Bros. 3 - the auto-scrolling tank levels in World 8.

Dark Souls - Tomb of the Giants. Gimmick level. Short and uninteresting, with cheap traps and cheap monsters in the dark.

Code Veronica is a badly designed game, no matter what lens you watch it through. I tried to like the game, but the cons far outweigh the pros. Only Zero is worse in my book.

Outstanding game but this damn climbing...
Lol, I remember back when I was in the military, I was doing a security round/patrol and happened to walk by the "Rec Deck" and just heard yelling and slamming. Went in and it was a guy at this exact spot just red-faced and enraged. I asked him if he needed help, he just threw the controller at me and I beat it second try. He asked me, "How the hell did you do that?"

As for my addition to the thread..

TMNT on NES might as well have ended for me on this fucking level:

Just in the Resident Evil series alone:
  • The island from RE4.
  • The cargo ship from RE7.
  • The sewers from both RE2 and REmake 2.
  • Revelation 1 every time you play as Chris.
As for other series:
  • The Missing Link DLC from Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It's not bad at all. But in the Director's Cut is a mandatory part of the game and grinds the pace of it to a screeching halt.
  • The first time you go to the medical station in Alien: Isolation. The sheer tension makes me dread replaying it.
  • Chryssalid terror missions in XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within. Especially the cargo ship.
  • Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag when it remembers it's supposed to be an Assassin's Creed game.

Yea, Zero takes the cake in terms of wasted potential and bad game design. Such a bummer.

CVX is great when you know what the game throws at you but yea, it's still flat out bad game design to effectively screw people over their first time playing.

CVX is weird in that you really have to go out of your way to get the atmosphere and graphics to shine. You really need to tweak the video settings to cut down on the fogginess and maximize the basic lighting engine. Something only uber nerds of RE will take the time to do, lol .:messenger_grinning_sweat:

It's Spring Yard Zone you moron.

I don't mind it too much because there's still a sense of speed to be honest.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Of course games are capable of having crappy levels but they’re also capable of bangers like the fire temple in ocarina of time or crossroads in call of duty 4’s multiplayer.

I remember in Killzone 2 there was a horde section near the end that almost made me drop the game in rage. Other than that, I really enjoyed the game overall.
Back then this type of experience was way more common... it seems nowadays levels are more balanced overall (or I just became more patient or better at it).

This isent really a "stage" in a way, well maybe the second example is but it's more how they completely upend the game in a bad way

Monster Hunter World, specifically two fights.

Behemoth, when this released I just instantly went "WTF" essentially they tried to add MMO mechanics to Monster Hunter, phases, enrage mechanics with an instant kill, even a red beam which signifies which player has Agrro, yes they added tanking from MMO's to Monster Hunter. This meant the fight played against the rules of the series up until that point and I hated it, but it was cross over so I put up with it. Sadly this poor idea of MMO raiding would slowly evolve into something much much worse.

Alatreon, essentially they decided to make a boss that unless you did a specific amount of elemental damage per phase he would enrage and one-shot the team... yes more MMO mechanics.

Why did this suck? For people who don't play Monster Hunter certain weapons are better at dealing raw (none elemental damage) or Elemental (well... elemental damage) so if your one of the weapons that sucks with doing elemental damage you where stuck on hard mode for this fight, or you switch out. Worse still things like "Blast element" something literally called "element" did not count meaning even more builds where rendered useless ONLY for this fight. No other Monster has ever demanded you specifically change a load out, you could always compensate with skill, but not for this guy you had to play elemental or go home.

Both of these fights drastically changed how you had to play Monster Hunter World, by introducing mechanics that they demanded you deal with and if not would one-shot the group, failing the hunt. This is not what people play Monster Hunter for and it pleased me immensely that none of this shit made it into Rise.

I don't "love" campaigns in Halo, but I DETEST Warthog levels.

Designer: Let's just force the player in this first person shooter to suffer through an entire level in third person while being unable to shoot. Also, let's make them drive a horribly controlling and slow vehicle! That will be fun.

Last if Us 2- boat section is so lame and unfun

Uncharteds- any run from something toward the camera section- crash called he wants his boring level design back.

Mario Odyssey- hate the asthenic of the new york level. So out of place and ugly.

New Ratchet- boring aimless open world level w. jet boots. Worse level in any ratchet game so far and totally should have been left on cutting room floor.

Skyward sword with their silent realms. They thought they could run the TP foolishness back.

I never actually finished Skyward Sword, I stopped playing at one of these. Most likely the very last one, but I just ran outta steam for the game.

Not exactly the game I wanted to come back for the anniversary. After the treatment Mario got JFC lol.

But anyway, I don't like Mystic Cave or Marble zone in Sonic 2/3, Caves in PSO, and I forget the name but the random encounter dungeon areas in Pokemon games with puzzle layouts. Just the memory of staring at my Game Boy Color with all those brown sprites fighting zubats and geodudes endlessly. On a screen without a light! In our naivety, we lived like peasants in happiness.

It took me a while to play my first Gwent game, it looked complicated at first and i didn't want to bother. At some point there was that mission where you really have to play and win, and forced myself to learn and holy fuck, it became a drug and i just keep playing a bunch Gwent for a long time before going back to the main plot. And the musics were so gweed... i mean good, it was stick to my head for weeks.
