GamePass isn't for everyone and that's something alot of people don't get

The big issue with Gamepass is now Xbox owners expect most games to be on Gamepass and limit sales of games. Studios will turn to Sony to secure the lost revenue
How does Gamepass limit sales of games not included in the service? If a dev puts a game on there, they've obviously worked through the numbers themselves.

I guess you could argue that GamePass subscribers are cheap and don't want to pay for games outside the platform. But those cheap ass bastards (like myself) were not going to buy many $60 games day one to begin with. 🤷‍♂️

As someone who likes to buy physical games. My thing is, will Microsoft still continue to make physical games?

And there's the problem.
How is that "problem" any different from PS with the standard model. I have a PS4, Sony makes great games, I'm still a cheap ass bastard though. As such, I'll wait for amazing sales on digital or buy used.

We exist whether or not GP exists or not. GP did not create the cheap gamer. LOL

I still haven't seen 1 big AAA publisher put their game on GP day 1.
Who said they ever have to?

Because sony is prob making more money with one game selling close to ten million then a deal MS could have cut them. Throw them in the service give them a slice of pie, or have the company thats market leader and has more consoles out and sold to give you a shot at the big leagues?

MS is conditioning people to not buy games. Gamepass as a sevice, you like what you like but it also gives them an excuse to be more GAAS model because "well its in gamepass, we'll fix it when we get to it"

Are you saying that MS is forcing devs into GP, so it's GP or Sony?

Devs aren't fanboys, they understand that if there is no MS, this is no deals to be had from Sony either.

In the same way that Hulu is just as important to the company selling content to Netflix as Netflix itself, without competition there are no exclusivity deals at all.

They look at a guaranteed cash pile and say sure why not however the fruit is always sweeter on the other side. Gamepass is only enticing for the i die darlings that knwo their game wont be fired and want some sort of security.

Here’s a little thought experiment.

Assume that all of those 10000000 are paying $15/month for ultimate (they’re not) and that by pushing it hard they double that.

That’s total Gamepass revenue of 3.6 billion, albeit 1/3 of that was existing Gold revenue.

That revenue now needs to support 15 studios and buy 3rd party content.

Do you think you’re going to get $500m games that take 5 years to produce?

How much profit do you think is on that?
Yeah so at the moment it's $1.8bn revenue a year, but who knows what percentage of gamers are paying the full price.

I think in the future to keep the price similar to what it is GamePass will focus on first-party and indie games to be the bulk of its catalogue. Big third-party games will just be too expensive for Microsoft to absorb, it will be unsustainable.

At the moment though I haven't got it on PC as there's no games I'm interested in except Gears which I bought on the MS store for £25, and Metro Exodus which I got in the initial steam sale.

The rub is that GamePass isn't the only option available. Have a big AAAA game that you are absolutely getting as many $60 sales as you can with, great. Down the road, once you've sold what you think you can, for the most part, maybe you decide that GP would be great icing on the cake.

Man, have you all seen the games on Game Pass? Just last night I was playing Carrion... It's freaking fantastic! The wife and I have been co-op playing WAY more ever since getting the service. Playing the different Lego games, Gears, Halo, and Minecraft dungeons. A friend and I were playing Mortal Kombat X the other day. Another friend and I have been having a blast in Forza Horizon. My niece really likes playing Minecraft on there and I just introduced my nephew to Banjo-Kazooie.

Some other highlights are Red Dead 2, Oxenfree, and Inside. A few of us have taken up Fuzion Frenzy and Rocket league. I didn't think I would like Quantum Break but it's actually really good. I liked experiencing a game that was clearly trying some new ideas.

There were a few I didn't like as well. But I am glad I was able to try them. Like No Man's Sky and Fallout 76. They just aren't my thing.

That's just scratching the surface. I play far more games now than ever before. My PS4 doesn't get much play time anymore. I am hopeful that GoT will get a PS5 upgrade because I do want to play it but with the PS5 so close I would rather wait and play it on that.

I am about to take a trip to Colorado. I am going to see just how well xCloud does while I am there. I probably won't have much time to play. But having the option in the evenings will be nice. I even bought a little adapter thing to connect my Phone to my controller.

I guess that's my long way of saying that, Yes, OP, I don't get that Game Pass isn't for everyone.

Thats why you decrease the value of the game to entice people to get it, its called a sale

Gamepass costs the equivalent of 3 $60 dollar games a year - I dunno I have Hulu, HBO Max and Netflix. Each one has their own interesting things goin on. I'm pretty casual as a gamer - I like to just hop in and out of shit so maybe it's not for EVERYONE in the world, if you only enjoy Sony exclusives or care about holding onto games for long periods of time - but it sounds pretty good for me, for casual players at least - it's a good concept.

I just saw Crapgamer, of all people, make some cogent points about the downsides of Gamepass, stuff I hadn't thought of myself, in part because I'm not as plugged into the Xbox environment as he is. I won't link the video, because I can guess what people think of Crapgamer.

Gamepass definitely isn't for me. I don't play lots of games at once, I play them gradually. Some I get when there much cheaper and others are on a backlog which I get to in time since I actually own those games.

why would you wanna play same game on more then one platform anyway ? play it one what you have best. or handled that would be phone , that could change the game if it would be flawless.

Sounded like just a bunch of clueless assumptions to me. The dumbest being that even if MS had 10m subscribers at $10/mo, the yearly revenue would be barely enough to cover development costs of two games. Then there's the assumption that without GP, MS would be competing with Sony in first-party output. News flash, MS wasn't matching the speed and scale of Sony's output long before GP was a thing. And so on.

I agree. I had GP for 2 months now and while I did try and enjoy some games I never would have bothered with before, it lost interest pretty quick. If you're really into Indie games its great, though.

I think MS will run into the same problem as Apple Arcade. Its one thing to get people to sign up for a trial but another to keep them engaged enough to keep them subscribed. Then again, that's why Halo and probably most MS's 1st party games will go GAAS.

I suppose if you're invested in the Xbox ecosystem then it is great value too. Not for me though as my sub ran out on Monday and I haven't renewed.

Main issue is that the library just isn't for me, only downloaded 5 games across Xbox & PC. Kept the PSNow sub instead as the library is more in tune with my tastes, plenty of JRPG & musou games, which is something lacking on GamePass.

You can certainly get more than your money's worth with GamePass tho if there's enough to interest you, just not for me 🤷‍♂️

For me the pricing is very attractive, but my lack of gaming time is the issue... and more plentiful my gaming library and backlog is, less interested I become. That's just how I am.

I found same thing regarding Netflix and other video streaming services. I do watch it sometimes - but a lot of time, more than I'd like to admit - I just browse through what they have for like 30 min, and end up not watching anything.

in what planet games on ps4 are selling 10 million?
there only 7 games that have broken 10mil, and 4 of them are sony's
then "close to ten" (8) is gts , also sony's, then we go below 5 mil for a couple of games and then to a fraction of the numbers you are throwing around

I mean honestly, I am not a huge fan of gaming subscription services, but I feel like Gamepass has a pretty good value and has given me the opportunity to play games I normally wouldn't normally play (such as Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, Wasteland 2, Descenders and various other games) and while the majority of my time is spent playing games like Halo MCC online (best multiplayer game of the generation btw) or going through my existing backlog of games, I have actually been buying more games than I normally would because of Gamepass and the money I feel like I am saving

Yeah, I won't vouch for his math on that one. He might've been thinking about how most people are getting GP for $1 a year.

I was actually thinking more about how he said the games have suffered, because of MS's desire to push them out unfinished, then milk them as service games. Granted, Gaas isn't the same as Gamepass, but they go hand in hand. Sea of Thieves was one example, State of Decay was another. He also said Gears 5 was made more accessible in order to be appealing to the casual GP audience, and this hurt its hardcore player base. Halo Infinite seems to be going in a similar direction -- in the sense of being released in unfinished state, as a "platform" to be utilized over the next, what, decade, as a GaaS type game.

Thats not a problem in any capacity. If anything Game Pass helps get revenue by giving the cheap gamer a reason to spend money.
thats makes no sense at all, gamepass embassators repeat this mantra on every thread and thats not true, gamepass makes people spend much less on games outside the service, its not only money, its time and people have certain expectations,im tired of people telling other "im waiting for this game to be on gamepass "

My 2 boys (5 and 8 years of age) share an xbox one s in there room. I thought getting 3 months of game pass would be fine for them except they only want to play Minecraft! So it was a complete waste of time! Either way, if it works for you that's fine, but it's just another way of renting a games service permonth and paying microsoft the luxury of borrowing said games on this service. I'd rather own my own games... I just can't get over the fact people are happy to play games then once you don't pay the monthly fee, you have nothing to pay! Don't make sense to me but i'm clearly not there market.

If you like a game you are playing on gamepass you're able to buy it as well. They even give you a discount on it. 🤯

There’s a thread on here today about how Sony is making more money from DLC than from selling games. Go check it out, now anybody who has a game on gamepass will surely be making money on DLC as well if that trend is to be believed

I will do you a bit better then 10 million.

Minecraft as of may 16th 2020 sold 200.000.000 copies for Microsoft, that makes it by far the best selling game ever!

I've gotten my money's worth, but I did do the thing where we could load up until like 2022 for cheap. I haven't decided whether I would pay full price yet.

Watching IGN reaction to the event, or Alannah and etc. They all big up GamePass like the lack of decent exclusives don't matter.

But GanePass isn't for everyone. This is coming from someone who loves Netflix and Spotify. With those mediums I can plow through a ton of music and TV shows. My wife also uses these accounts. However with games it takes longer to play games which means you can't play a ton of games to make it worth your subscription fee. Also there are many games that are long or have online modes so your focusing on one game alot. Finally there are a ton of games that just never come out on GamePass.

I'll give you a example last year I bought Monster Hunter Iceborn which coated me around £35. I played that game exclusively for 2 to 3 months straight and nothing else other than a few sessions if Street Fighter V here and there. I also purchased God of War which was on sale for £10. I also picked up Mario Maker for the Switch which costed me £40. Also received Sonic Mania from Plus and TitanFall 2 which I played. With those 6 games that was enough games for me for a year.

If I paid for Gamepass without those £1 deals id spend around £130 for a year without choosing what games I want to play.

So this is why Gamepass don't interest me. I'd rather buy games I love day 1, and grab games I am half interested in on a impulse sale price, instead of paying for a sub and be limited to games their. The fact is I only play upto 6 games a year for me it's about quality over quantity and alot of the time the 6 games in that year are Sony exclusives. None of the games from Microsoft interest me other than Forza Horizon and Ori.

And I don't see Gamepass working with the masses. I have a ton of casual friends who only play FIFA and COD and grab the occasional other game like GTA, Red Dead and Spiderman that you wouldn't see in Gamepass. They don't play a ton of games a year. That model for many only works for Netflix and Spotify as those mediums you can go through more content quicker.
Game Pass isn’t really aimed at us (enthusiasts) who buy every new game on day one. It’s aimed at the mass market in an attempt to lure them away from PlayStation by offering ridiculous value while also hoping customer enjoy the games enough to then buy DLC/MT etc on top of their subscription fee.

Third parties also get to boast about “X number of players” for games that have largely sold all they ever will outside of bargain bins. It’s a great service. For the right type of customer.

I imagine combinding Game Pass with the possible elimination of Gold subscription fees aswell as offering what is essentially a 1080p version of Series X for $300 is MS’s combined battle plan for this gen. If so they will do a lot better than this gen but I still think Sony will sell 30-40% more boxes overall by the end of the gen.

Of course, I was talking 95% of games released every gen - third party games. Also let's face it, there's not many people excited by Xbox on here in terms of their exclusives. Same on the other forum, very PS focused so I doubt they care outside of Gears and Halo maybe.

I have Game Pass on PC. It's ridiculous value especially if you've missed out on the Xbox exclusives of the past few years!
