Gamepass' aim is a "Netflix mentality" with "Blockbuster " content

A 2-year-old post I stumbled on from a user on GameFAQ:
the concept of exponentially-decreasing impetus to cease subscription retention

It's simply that, statistically, the longer you have a subscription, the far less likely you are to cancel it. It's something like a 90+% retention rate if you haven't already canceled after the first 3 months (as far as the data goes for clubs and video streaming services).

After a certain time, subscribers start to do something fascinating. Some statisticians refer to it as the "members only" mentality - the members don't want to lose that "member" status because "what if I miss out?" - and so, start to defend their purchase even if they, themselves don't understand the inherent value in it. When this occurs, they start to delve deeper to bolster their reasoning for subscribing - often citing benign or less interesting features as huge selling factors (you can draw parallels to the behaviors console fanboys display).

If you apply this behavior to Game Pass, this would be where trying to find the value in their subscription, the player would start to try to squeeze worth out of their subscription by playing a bunch of games they normally wouldn't play. And before they know it, it's just like when a supermarket on Black Friday suckers you in with those $100 TVs and you end up just getting a whole bunch of cheap tat just because you're there, and it's Black Friday, and you don't want to miss out.

Game Pass is an extraordinarily clever move, in theory at least. The continued retention fees from members is a continuous, assured revenue stream - not like throwing out a game for 60 quid and hoping they make enough sales in that finite initial period where sales are critical. They can add it to their service and watch the revenue trickle in slowly, constantly, and assuredly.

The common argument is that game pass "devalues developers" but it instead allows developers to produce lower quality games that would go unnoticed with a retail price tag.

Gamepass subscription enables developers the opportunity to saturate the platform with B-rated games when AAA titles struggle.

When we take into account Microsoft's "wishy-washy washy" stance on exclusive and their late in the game position on "more focus on exclusive" it shows that Gamepass won't have original content like it streaming counterpart, Netflix for a while.

EDIT: Gamepass' aim is a "Netflix mentality" with "Blockbuster " library is a better title

Common argument from whom? When did Halo, Forza, and Gears day 1 become lower quality titles? What about if you don't like Game pass don't subscribe? The biggest complainers don't have Game pass anyway so why would you care?

I see value in Gamepass only in short bursts, e.g., subscribing for a 3-month period to finish all the games I really want to play and then unsubscribing.

So many people here say "With Gamepass, I can play games I wouldn't normally buy." I don't see value in that. I don't want to waste my time playing games that I wasn't excited about it in the first place. Yes, there is a 1/10 probability that I might stumble on a "hidden gem", but that investment-reward-ratio is not worth the effort for me.

I also see a negative impact on the overall quality of games in the industry. But each to his own. If you are enjoying Gamepass, cool, good for you! Don't let anyone dissuade you.

Rather this is a bad thing or not is subjective.... However what examples do you have? For the sake of arguing/conversation

As will Perfect Dark, Avowed, Fable, Indiana Jones (possible Game Pass debut I won't completely rule out), Starfield, next Doom, Everwild, State of Decay 3 etc.

Exactly the energy I want people to keep for when Halo Infinite Campaign is next shown.

I guess I’ve been lucky with the games they have added. A lot of games that I would usually wait for a deep discount ended up there instead. Which in the long run ended up saving me money regardless of if I liked or hated the game I might have bought on sale.

Reality is, if you play through 1 game or try a few per month/ your subscription is worth it. As it would have probably costed you more than that 1 month did to either find out you hated it or played all the way through it.

Believe it or not it can subsidize your gaming experience and doesn’t have to be the primary way you buy or play games.

Did you really make a thread about a two year old Gamefaqs post and think this was a solid foundation for an argument?

But anyway, it’s a known fact that most people don’t cancel subscriptions once they have them and that’s why everyone (even outside of gaming) jumps on the subscription model: it just increases lifetime value on average.

Are you being serious? B-rated games? Posts like these are not worth the time it takes to read them.

Posts like that are usually best left ignored. They don’t actually understand the quality and variety of games on offer and want to feel better about paying more for the same games.

Yes but it's blatantly a troll post, I'm all for opinions but this is nonsense.

Why anyone keeps mentioning Sony in every fucking Gamepass thread ?
Who knows but I wish they would stop.

It’s obvious that word will be obsolete in 10 years or so.

Just like the TVs

Look, thanks to these GamePass is a Gift From God vs GamePass Is Worse than the Plague thread fights it is impossible to discuss about GamePass properly, but you are taking it to a new level here with the Sony comment.

At least the façade of preferring one platform while not necessarily hating the other is off.
