Game Pass’ Massive Growth Is Bringing Developers Some Surprises

They paid 130-180 for Xbox Live gold then spent $1 to convert it to Gamepass. So they paid 131-181 for three years of Gamepass. So 3.6-5 per month.
If you do the convert trick, do you still get LIVE too, or do you have to buy that again?

Ultimate is Gold/Gamepass Console/Gamepass PC/XCloud/EA Access combined. You get all the services for 1 price.

There is a second conversion trick if you don’t want to buy 3 years of gold where you can get 1 year of EA Access and it converts to 4 months of Ultimate, it’s not as popular because it’s more expensive in the long term, but its better for people who don’t want to pony up for 3 years of gold in one go.

Alot of gamepass games are hidden gems with DLC to buy. It makes sense that if you download a game for "Free" and you enjoyed it, you'd be inclined to purchase the DLC.
No it doesn't. It's like renting a game and then buying DLC for a game you don't own.

You could have bought a lot of 3 or 4 dollar games for the price you paid for those 3 years of Gold. 😅
I got it for real cheap on those shady sites you hear about and I redeemed it with a VPN. MS is so desperate to inflate their numbers I thought I'd be nice and give it to them. Thanks!

For future reference, you don’t need to use a VPN. You can just switch regions on Xbox.com or on your Xbox itself. MS doesn’t region lock anything after Xbox 360.

I do it all the time when there’s Games with Gold in Japan or Germany that are different than the North American offerings.

I’m new to the service and only paid a dollar for three years, but it’s the best damn dollar I ever spent.
No you didn't just pay a dollar. You paid for Xbox Live Gold plus $1.

This is like those idiots who trade their phone in for something else, and say "yeah I only paid $700 for my Iphone 12 Pro Max" but leave out the fact they traded in another phone they originally paid $1000+ for.

Of course they spend more. That's the whole point of Games as a Service, which is basically what GamePass is all about. It's free-to-play games locked behind a monthly rental subscription before you can start getting charged for endless microtransactions.

Gold is part of Gamepass Ultimate so its part of the conversion promotion. It's not a trick. It's a promotion converting an existing subscription that was paid for to another subscription model.

Agreed. And it's a smart offer regardless of if people are taking advantage of it in the short-term. Many of these long-time users will be so used to the service when the promo period ends, that has to be a positive for MS. Plus, they started this promo in 2019, so that was a smart way of getting users to commit to the Xbox platform for three years just before a new generation (bribed loyalty is still loyalty, am I right).

ah ok! but 1 year of gold are not available anymore right?
I’m pretty sure you can still buy 1 year cards anywhere, except from MS themselves. I’m not 100% on that though as I haven’t needed one or looked in a long time.

How can this possible, the naysayers claim that Gamepass is not profitable enough to make that much money. Hmm 🤔

GamePass changed the game.

Industry shifting service.

I said it, and i say it again, GP is the future same as with moving from expensive carts to digital disc.

And if you buy DLC and the game gets delisted, I'm sure those same users are inclined to purchase the game outright.

Yes, as sneaky as it sound, the ticket to money is the delisting schedule. (besides growing the sub'bers base)

GP has so many games on buffet, you cant possibly finish them, at least for those with a full time job, and full time job = more spending power.

Only for indie developers. Do you ever wonder why best selling franchises like CoD or GTA is never on Gamepass? Because Activision or Rockstar won’t be bribed for few quids that may sway indie developers.
I never wondered that.

But I wonder why GTA was given absolutely for free by Epic on their launcher.

How you explain that?

Can you point to a single free-to-play game being in Gamepass? And I mean just the basic free-to-play version, free-to-play games with expansions available in Gamepass like Destiny 2 don't count due to expansions not being free

They do. I always get my games from a guy in Argentina and can only redeem the gifts with a VPN.

Gifts are different. They tell you when you buy them you have to live in the same country as the recipient. Other codes work fine.

Well yap EA is on GP..
RDR, FF, DQ have been on GP....
Soon Ass cred and Ubi..
Kojipro coming too...
Sega loves GP...

bububut no big games..

Get with times haterzz :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Those games were not made with GamePass in mind. Once games started being developed from conception to release with the GamePass day and date model in mind, I don't see it being possible to have games that are "one and done" with a monstrous budget being made.

I know, but you generally said "you don’t need to use a VPN". It was just a warning for others, before they buy something in a key shop and it doesn't work with changing regions.

Ok but your example is the greyest of grey market areas and you are receiving those gifts from stolen accounts, so I generally disregard them.

But you are right under extenuating circumstances you might need a VPN.

I mean it's not really FUD when that's what Xbox execs seemed to indicate in interviews lol. But time will tell. I don't see 100 million+ budget for traditional single-player only projects happening once GamePass is in full swing

I completely understand the + of Game Pass but what does this mean if there not relevant info to compare it to? They say they play 20% longer...compared to what? Sales of certain games exploded....compared to what?

Phil has said Gamepass offers little value for GAAS because if you only play one game you just buy the game.

It's more about playing a bunch of games, but you all sit here and disagree with him still.

I doubt they are all from stolen accounts. Many were bought on sales or are just from countries with extremly low game prices and average income. In those countries they are more than happy if they make a few cents with low effort. Like my contact in Argentina, he always wants so little money that i voluntary give him more. Neither me or a friend of mine had any trouble with a key seller, but i know you are right and there is also fraud.

And completing them all? Really doubt it. GamePass is about engagement and having people come back. That is done through games that have long "life-cycles" with dreep feeds of content - whether that be through episodic single-player chapters or games as a service multiplayer. I mean based on Xbox's recent output, this theory about gamepass not being suitable for huge budget single-player-only games hasn't really been proven wrong. But I guess we'll see in the future..

Yeah, it's totally up to each studio, and I know some people that, when they've looked at the model around Game Pass, have assumed that Game Pass is actually a better model, if there's more Games-as-a-Service games in the subscription.

I actually argue the opposite and believe the opposite. The last thing I want in Game Pass is that there's one game that everybody is playing forever, that's not a gaming content subscription, that's a one-game subscription, that's WoW, right?

So for us, having games in the subscription that have a beginning, middle, and end, and then they go on to play the next game, maybe those are single-player narrative-driven games, I just finished Tell Me Why, an amazing game from DontNod, those games can be really strong for us in the subscription. In many ways, they're actually better than one or two games that are soaking up all the engagement in the subscription.

I want a long tail of a lot of games that people are playing, and I think the diversity of online multiplayer versus single-player, we have to support the diversity there, and that's my goal.

If anything I'd like to see more single-player games from our first-party, just because that over time we've kind of grown organically to be more multiplayer-driven as an organisation.

THEAP99 THEAP99

The fact is that even if you are at home 24/7 right now you wouldn't have time to play through just the weekly additions at this point.

Tell Me Why doesn't really debunk what I was saying though. I have said it before and will say it again, once I see multiple single-player-only games that are at least 15+ hours with a huge budget (not AA like Tell Me Why) launch on gamepass day and date after being made with that in mind at least score 85 or higher on metacritic, I will "believe" in the gamepass model (I never will because I think owning games is better, but anyways).

I understand what you're saying in that these smaller shorter smaller scale single-player games like Hellblade or Tell Me Why can work in the GamePass model but I specified specifically what I am referring to when I talk about the single-player that I don't think is viable in the gamepass model.

And time is another factor too that people don't understand why some don't like gamepass, because they don't feel like filing through a whole bunch of stuff to play hoping to find a gem or two. I mean that's pretty much me with Netflix right now and I find it annoying and wouldn't really like to see gaming fully embrace that path.

If anything Tell Me Why helps prove my point about some kind of the single-player stuff to expect, considering it's an episodic game, lol.
In my own quote that you just quoted i even said:

Building an install base. Epic ponied up cash for you to get new users. That's what the free Epic games are. GTA will be on these services like PS Now and Gamepass because of the microtransaction monstrosity GTA Online is though.

It's profitable to devs because MS is paying all of it and giving cheques left and right to devs directly (like Epic). Square Enix got a fat cheque too.

I just did 1$ trick again until 2024. I'm glad the devs will get my penny lol

That's nice and all but you're forgetting the part where gp users spend more money on gaming so..... 1$ or no, it's still more money on average.

Great to see this. Gamepass does gets you out of comfort zone and try new things. Over all fantastic service.

I am falling for a previous bad habit of jumping too many games, even the ones i like cause i want to try something new. So there is that.
