To my surprise I get the same Mario fatigue playing 3D World as I had when I played it on the Wii U. Even Sunshine was more engaging.

Some level have really great ideas but something is simply not catching me. Maybe the missing flood or Cappy.

It might be that 3D World has quite short levels. Very enjoyable but very short. I had the same issue if that is the case.

Enjoy Oddysey a LOT but I just can't fathom finishing up the Bowser Boss fight.

There are some great levels.
Like the shadow level, where you find the secrets looking at the shadows.
I’m at world 4 now (all stars cleared). Will finish the game before going into bowser fury, just because I didn’t on the Wii U and I need to get some playtime out of the double dip.

that’s said, I enjoy 3D World levels more when I consider them as an extension of 2D Mario Games instead of looking at them as 3D Mario levels. I guess I eventually got why 3D World wasn’t a successor of Sunshine in the Nintendo timeline. It’s clearly a different design approach.

Looks really nice in it's dock, for me it's more themed for taiko no tatsujin colourwise as it matches don & kats colourscheme perfectly

System transfer is a ballache though, so much messing about and the animal crossing save was a pain in the ass too. After i had moved all my accounts over i realised i needed to download a damn software tool from the eshop to move my island as it needs to be on both consoles. Had to make up a new account to get access to the eshop again as i didn't want to potentially cause problems by reusing one of my original accounts to log in jusut in case it fucked things up. My several hundred hour safely moved across but i wont be doing that again in a hurry.
It looks like the red used for the 16 bit Mario Amiibo.
The menu screens in 3D World definitely use a different red compared to Odyssey or Mario Kart 8.

Okay it's prediction time.

In the next 14 days we'll get a Zelda Direct announcing two collections and BOTW2 for 2021.
I don’t think we get any announcement prior April. Nintendo is happy with Monster Hunter as their 2021 AC. They easily meet their forecast so I think they will use Zelda to keep momentum in Spring.

I’m looking forward to the next NSO update and will be pretty angry if I spent 60 bucks on Mario 3D all stars when those games are available within NSO. Ok, you also get all the songs as a special in the all-stars version but come on. Anyways, better then paying another 60 bucks for the next “remasters”.

I still think Nintendo is done with regular Directs, although I think it's possible we get "E3" Direct or whatever they'll call it. I can see a Pokemon Direct happening soon and I'm pretty sure will get a new Mario Party this year since ND Cube seems capable of 2 game development.

I'm not to sure of what Nintendo would do with Zelda, I think Skyward Sword might get a remaster and the Wii U Zelda remasters could get re-released. Probably later this year they'll do Legend of Zelda 35 which will be the same thing as Super Mario 35 and I think Breath of the Wild 2 will be early 2022.

You could be really right. Originally I thought they'd wait until April to start talking about new stuff but I also think that the first Zelda collection could be coming in April and they'd need a place to announce that.

You're on! I personally expect General Directs to come back eventually, but we might have to wait until after everyone is working from the office again.

52 hours later, Age of Calamity is done. Playing on hard was a mistake. Face the second half of the final boss encounter without being able to take a hit was maddening. I don't think I'll ever need to play a Musou game again. There is some depth there but probably only for about a 15 hour experience.

I've been on hard, but I'm playing co-op with my daughter who is about my equal in the game and I'm sure that's made a huge difference. We've only had a couple levels where we died more than once and had to restart from checkpoints, none of the main levels, just the last few side levels. However I can see as a single player experience 'hard' might be pretty tough toward the end. Unless, of course, you leveled way up. I'm around 75 hours now and have only one side quest remaining (8 Korok seeds to go) before I'm at 100% (99.46% currently). Still have to finish upgrading everyone's level to 100 (already there with Link, everyone else is ~75) and weapon to max levels but that shouldn't be too hard what with selling select items / gems for a crap-ton of money at certain merchants. I'm hoping for DLC so I can make use of some of these overpowered characters.

Yeah. It's mostly bosses or facing groups of elite enemies or being forced to use other characters who are either under leveled or unfun to play as. I really dislike most of the characters outside of Link.

Just Finished Xenoblade Chonicles DE. Hadn't played the game since I originally completed it way back on the Wii

Fantastic game, just really enjoyable. Got to a point where I was farming a couple of high level enemies for gauntlets and for all I was just running the same group over and over again I was nonetheless enjoying it.

Really liked the graphical upgrades they did. I know a portion of the fanbase wasn't happy with the move away from the grittier looking art style but the style they've gone with in the DE looks great and I expect it will age better. Some of the characters looked fantastic in the DE, particularily their faces
Egil and the other Machina really impressed me

The end game also looked great. I mean it was impressive back on the Wii but they still achieved that feeling of awe
When you're running through the solar system to face Zanza
and that ending just works so well.

I really love the Xenoblade series. It has shot up to be among my top 3 favorite series of all time and along with Fire Emblem means that Nintendo offers 2 series that are system sellers for me. I hope Monolith can keep the series going and at the same quality. Hell, I don't even mind if they want to branch out and take a stab at a new IP. Their performance on the Xenoblade series and their technical ability with large worlds and RPGs mean I'll be 99% on board to buy whatever they offer next.

50 minutes Jesus Christ

Have to believe Zelda anniversary stuff is likely to be in there. I think that may excite me the most honestly. There are a lot of Zelda games I haven't played and I think the time is also ripe for BotW2 information to come out. Very nice indeed.

50 minutes is promising. Wonder if the Smash character might tie in to the speculated Zelda announcements. God knows the game needs another Zelda character.

Huh, that's exactly how I felt about Hyrule Warriors and why I stayed away from Age of Calamity. The musou action is fun, but it can't sustain the length of game it wants to be and everything devolves into endless grinds in the end. Missing out on a top rank because you finished at 15.01 then having to do the level again and knowing that the difference wasn't so much your skill as much as your character level was infuriating.

Enjoyed it, but never need to experience that again.

I'll keep my expectations in check so I'm going to predict we'll see Metroid 5, a new Donkey Kong game, Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3, Monolith Soft's new IP, F Zero NX and BotW 2, I think it's perfectly reasonable.

That's keeping your expectations in check?

Dude, we're getting a new Mario Party, a new Smash character and blue balls.

Don't forget about Nintendo buying Sega, it is on a Wednesday after all.

Hang on... 2pm on 2.17.2021

Sega in alphabetical order is 19 5 7 1

The message explicitly states "the first half"

The first half of Sega is 19 and 5

Add them together we get 24.

Divide that by two as they have the year and we get 12

Put that back in place of the original entries for 'S' and 'E' and we get 12 7 1

Time comes before day so we get 12712

Reverse it

Ok - old man yells at cloud moment. Hoping someone can assist.

I'm in Texas with the statewide power outage. No internet and trying to catch up on some Switch stuff.

Paper Mario - when I booted it up, it said that an update was available and I needed to download it to play - but I was completely offline (obviously). I don't have it digitally - the cartridge was in the slot. Is there really no way to play this without updating it first?

Tried to play Hades, however that's a digital purchase. It gave me a "verifying purchase" error - can I not play Hades if I'm not connected to the internet?

And finally - I was surprised to find I could play the SNES Switch Online games offline. I guess I always thought I was streaming them or something this whole time, but when you download that SNES app - are all those games now saved locally? It was a pleasant surprise to be sure but I'm wondering what's stopping someone for doing Switch Online for one month, getting all the games and cancelling? It clearly doesn't need to confirm I have a valid account if I'm offline so how does this work? More curious than anything else, I'd never cancel at only $20 a year and want the new game updates.

Thanks!

Not 100% sure about Paper Mario but there should be a way to just start the game without any patch. No Start Software option at all?

For Hades, NSO, and any other digital games you need to connect once per week (booting up the game in question) to play them. The DRM checks in regularly in weekly intervals, but then expires.

To get around the DRM I’ve had success using my phone as a wifi hotspot and connecting the Switch. As long as you aren’t trying to download any patches, the DRM connection is minimal data. I have done this at the airport when I forgot to use the app before a flight and really wanted to play some SNES games, but didn’t want to risk connecting to public wifi.

BTW good luck and stay safe. I assume you are doing ok since you are trying to get the Switch working - that is a good first world problem to be having at the moment given the circumstances.

Yeah Paper Mario had no start software option, it was really odd. 3D All Stars did though. And thanks for the tip about the weekly check in, I'll start with that.

And thanks - it's hell right now. Went about 30 hours with no power (back on currently) in sub zero temps. Right now just trying to charge all devices and keep my pipes from bursting. Just trying to get both my Switches ready to go to get through the boredom of no power/internet and inability to leave the house.

As for the Switch online,it does a check once a week if you can play and when it does that, it checks if you have an active online membership.

Hyped to finally see Nintendo announce some games they are developing.

And honestly, I really missed the big directs. The smaller way they were announcing games was nice all, but they didn't have the same "gravitas" as the actual directs had. The exciment it generates in the air is simply unique.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe is actually the best selling game in the franchise.

I'm completely shocked but yep. I heard it tanked but maybe that's just here in the states. I'd love for Pikmin 4 to be a reality as much as anyone.

Probably has as much to do with the massive install base of the Switch tho. Considered how many Switches vs GameCubes were in homes it actually makes the sales of those first two games more impressive now.

Long post

A lot to take in with Nintendo. I think we are in for a busy few years. I only wonder how much covid has impacted things. A few months back I put together a list of things I was expecting in 2021 on. Figure with a direct tomorrow it is a good time to revisit it. This isn't a list of what I expect for a direct but really what I am expecting from Nintendo for the next 2+ years.

Mario: not expecting too much Mario but I don’t think he will be absent this year.
  • Mario Golf: I feel like this is a certainty. Camelot has been quiet since Mario Tennis and they’ve largely become a Mario Sports studio. They’ve produced plenty of Mario Golf games and I think we are due up for another this year. Would love to see them tackle something else though but the sun may have set there.
  • Galaxy 2: I’d like to think this game is going to be a DLC for SM3DAS and a way to push one more month of sales. Shouldn’t be a difficult task with the hybrid emulator. Would be a really neat “one more thing” to add to a direct, even better if it were free DLC. I could see this really pushing SM3DAS sales over the top.
  • 3D Mario: Over three years out from Oydssey now...I could see another game being on the horizon. The big question is how much bandwidth did Bowser’s Fury take up? Is this pseudo open world style the future of Mario or will the next entry be closer to an Odyssey 2? I suspect we see a new Mario game sooner than later.
Zelda: With this year being the 35th anniversary I am expecting a lot of noise similar to Mario’s past few months. Plenty of games and plenty of merch.
  • Breath of the Wild Sequel – I know everyone is anticipating this along with a Switch Pro in November but with covid I could easily see this slipping to March 2022. Regardless, I think this is a busy year so plenty of flex here.
Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD Wii U Ports - these seem like no brainers to me. The definitive versions of each games and well-made ports. Grezzo finished work on Link’s Awakening back in 2019 so plenty of time to get these ported over.
  • Skyward Sword – this one is tricky since it relies on the Wii Remote so heavily. It could be handled with the hybrid emulator used for SM3DAS. Either way, would be nice to see this game given another chance.
Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask – hoping we see the 3DS versions of these games brought over (with some minor tweaks) both games have high quality assets and I’d like to see them be given new life on Switch. I feel it is unlikely we see these ports but I really don’t want to them to fade away with 3DS. I hope we see the original N64 games on Virtual Console as well. More on that later.
  • Zelda eShop – I assume we will see a little eShop title similar to Mario 35. Maybe it will be a port of the DSiware Four Swords title?
  • Lego – With the Mario Lego doing well last year and that really neat NES the door is open for Zelda stuff now. I expect we will see some expensive sets and I am sure I will go broke as a result.
  • Amiibo – Some reissues of BOTW amiibo and the 30th anniversary amiibo line makes sense. There are several I missed that I am hoping to pick up this go around.
Pokemon: Not really expecting anything Pokemon at this show as they typically do their own shows and have a 25th anniversary to celebrate this year.
  • Detective Pikachu – We haven’t heard anything on this for several years. Never understood why they didn’t have a Switch port to tie in with the movie release but oh well. I think we will see more of this one soon.
  • Pokemon Snap – We have a release date for this now so probably nothing else to talk about.
  • Pokemon Unite – Beta is coming next month so I’m sure we will see more of this soon.
  • Pokemon Remake – Nothing announced but I assume this year is a remake year. Going to assume it is gen 4 and will be a big deal with the 25th Anniversary this year. Expecting more later this year.
Metroid: The other 35th anniversary this year...not expecting too much fanfare from Nintendo but I do think we are due up for a new game.
  • Metroid Prime 4: This one is probably late 2022 at the earliest. Likely a 2023 game. Curious to see how it fares with Retro...they aren’t the same studio from the GC/Wii era.
  • 2D Metroid: Over three years removed from Samus Returns by Mercury Steam I think we see another 2D style Metroid in 2021 maybe with a little acknowledgement of the 35th anniversary as well and a small Amiibo reissue?
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy: I don’t think this gets announced until we get closer to Metroid Prime 4. I’m actually expecting the game to be emulated in the hybrid style similar to how Galaxy was handled on SM3DAS.
Other First Party:
  • Fire Emblem Echoes – Koei Tecmo did a good portion of Three Houses and IS didn't spend all of their time on Paper Mario, a FE remake feels likely. Genealogy of the Holy War would be a really cool one.
  • Donkey Kong – Another anniversary. Not sure that we see to much with this one. Maybe some sort of Mario 35 type title? Then again, who knows what Nintendo is up to.
  • Kirby – We get a new Kirby game every year and we are three years out from the last mainline game. A real safe guess.
  • Splatoon – We had that SOS tease back at the beginning of 2020. Not sure what they would do. Splatoon 3 doesn’t seem likely but perhaps we see something else in the Splatoon universe. I really would rather them put more into improving Splatoon 2 than create a third game. Who knows though.
  • Pikmin 4 – This one is dead.
Animal Crossing DLC - Total speculation, but a paid expansion would be very profitable; crazy not to. A ton that they could do with this as well. The game is basically a blank canvas for new content. A lot from prior titles they could incorporate.
  • Monolith Soft – 3 years out from XC2 I’m expecting something from this developer in the next 18 months. I know people probably want XC3 but I’m really interested in the fantasy title. Hoping we see something from them this year.
  • Wario Ware – Been a while since the last one. Joycons could create an interesting way for people to play the mini games.
  • Smash – New character tomorrow. Could be anyone. Hoping it stays closely affiliated with Nintendo though. Would rather it not be Fortnite.
Other Switch Exclusives:
  • Bravely Default 2 – not much left to say about this. Coming out in a week.
  • Monster Hunter Rise – Similar to the above. We have a demo and a release date not much more to say here.
  • Monster Hunter Stories 2 – Releasing later this summer. Not near as much noise for this as there is for Rise and I find it unusal to release them so close together. Regardless still more to talk about.
  • Good Feel’s Samurai Title – We know they are self-publishing a little Samurai title developed by their new office. Hoping we see more of it soon.
  • Bayonetta – I don’t think we hear anything more about this for a while. Hopefully a 2022 release.
Third Party:
  • Persona 5 Strikers – We have a release date. Not expecting much other than a mention of this.
  • Persona 5 Royal/Persona 4 Golden/Persona 3 – I’m still not clear on whether Sony has exclusivity locked down on any of these titles. With P4G on Steam last year I think a PS4/Switch port would make a lot of sense. Still holding out hope for P5R on Switch as well. There was a little noise around P3 last year too...no idea if that was a bunch of nothing or not. Regardless this is year the 25th anniversary so bringing P4 to PS4 and P4+P5 to Switch would be a great way to celebrate.
  • Shin Megami Tensei III HD – We have a generic spring 2021 release for this one. I don’t expect too much noise other than a firm date at this point.
  • Shin Megami Tensei V – Hoping this one gets some more attention and makes its release date. I expect this will be a late summer/fall release.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai Infinity Strash – Not sure if this is coming to Switch or not but we should be seeing more of this game relatively soon.
  • Dragon Quest Ports/Emulated games – Yet another anniversary this year, DQ turns 35. I fully expect to see some more ports to celebrate. I think XII is still a ways off.
Danganronpa – Full trilogy has been ported to mobile so I don't believe a Switch port is out of the question.
  • Ys IX – We know a port is coming later this year. Expecting to see something in a direct soon.
  • No More Heroes III – again, another we know it is coming this year just a matter of when.
Other:
  • Virtual Console – I absolutely think we see in the introduction of paid VC at some point this year. N64 and GameBoy seems like a given. I think the work they put into SM3DAS points to that along with the new NSO app. I think we move towards a NES, SNES, N64, etc suite of apps with the ability to purchase new titles within the app. It is a shame that Wii U had such a robust VC lineup. Hopefully Switch can catch up.
  • Mobile Game – I’m sure Nintendo has something cooking in this space. Mario Kart did pretty well. Heaven help me if it is a Zelda title. I will need a second job.
  • Switch Pro – The big elephant in the room. Totally possible that this will be a replacement for the current Switch, new 3DS style. I'm not expecting a huge upgrade but I'm not expecting it to be a slouch either. I think some frame rate and resolution improvements will go a long way. I'm not sure that they go all in with DLSS and all of the bells and whistles but anything to move closer to 1080p and a solid 60 would be huge.

Let's see how much I get right for my realistic(ish) predictions:

Direct Opener: Metroid V

First party announcements:
  • Animal Crossing DLC
  • Monster Hunter fighter for Smash
  • Mario Golf / Sport
  • Splatoon spinoff (RPG?) or Fire Emblem 4 remake
  • Final Bravely Default trailer
Third party announcements:
  • Super Monkey Ball
  • Borderlands 3
  • Fallout 4
  • Plants Vs Zombies
Third party games shown:
  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Monster Hunter Stories 2
  • No More Heroes 3
  • Story of Seasons
  • Shin Megami Tensei III
  • Shin Megami Tensei V
  • Persona 5 Strikers
  • Dragon Quest Infinity Strash
No shows: Bayontetta 3, anything Pokemon (including Snap)

Wildcards:

  • Zelda 35th - On the one hand I can see BOTW2 being the closer, but on the other hand I can see them waiting until the new fiscal year to announce things in a dedicated event. If we do get it in this Direct, it'll include 2 different retro releases and BOTW coming this year.
  • NSO overhaul - Pretty sure one is coming in April, but not sure if it would get announced now or closer to the time

Maximum Hype Announcement: Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia Game of the Year edition
