i love the originality of this list. for one thing, few people would list nes METROID as their favorite game from that era, but i too love the hell out of it as you do; for another, SANDS OF TIME is a wonderful game, and to see that someone loves it so much as to name it their favorite of that era not only feels right, but somehow. . . original?

i donnu man. good picks!

At first I thought you were being sarcastic, but then I started looking more closely at other folks' picks.

And I know this is sacrilege in these here parts, but in many ways, I think that Sands of Time improves on ICO.

Oh dammit, how I wish Sega would let Sega WOW just make a REAL Phantasy Star sequel using CANVAS engine with Mamoru Nagano doing all the art, oh my so glorious, oh well I shouldn't put too much into that. =/

Runners up: Goldeneye 007 - N64, Metal Gear Solid - PSX

Sixth:
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - PS2
Runners up: Resident Evil 4 - GC, Ninja Gaiden - XBOX

BASE WARS kicked so much ass! i remember finding that game, and after being subjected to hours of shitty (but in retrospect sublime) nes BASEBALL, a baseball game that actually let you beat some fucking ass was a real breath of fresh air.

and maybe i should retry MASS EFFECT. i traded for a copy from marvie a while back and i haven't popped it in again yet; i got stuck shortly after getting that big bouncy car thing because i got lost. the story was rolling along and pretty sweet, but getting lost in a game is the death knell for me.

You really should get back into ME, beezle. If not because its one of the best games of the generation, then because it has a sure-to-be-even-better sequel dropping in 4 months.

Gen 2: Donkey Kong [Colecovision]
Gen 3: Defenders of Dynatron City[NES]...
Just kidding. Really I'd say, as cliche as it is, Super Mario Brothers 3[NES].
Gen 4: Aladdin [Genesis]
Gen 5: Silent Hill[PSX]
Gen 6: Knights of the Old Republic[XBOX]
This is almost Shenmue, and I apologize to the Shenmue Defense Force for this untimely betrayal, but I gotta go with KotOR. I just played it more. I had more fun. Shenmue is one of my favorites... really that gen gave me a lot of great gaming, but I gotta go with KotOR.
Gen 7: Mirror's Edge[360] So far at least. Mass Effect is good, and SMG was a sexual experience, but Mirror's Edge has a sense of style that just keeps me coming... back for more.

Gen 3: Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Master System
Runner up: Super Mario Bros. 3 - NES

Gen 4: Donkey Kong Country - SNES
Runner up: Yoshi's Island - SNES

Gen 5: Final Fantasy VII - PSOne
Runner up: Castlevania: Symphony of the night - PSOne

Gen 6: Final Fantasy X - PS2
Runner up: Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne - PS2

Gen 7: Street Fighter IV - PS3
Runner up: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - PS3

Gen 5 was probably my favourite era for games.

That's what I did, and I began to notice it's charms. Played through multiple times after that. If you can get over it's lackluster shooter dynamic and enjoy the powers, you'll find a fun game.

Gen 1: too young

Gen 2: n/a. I remember playing Pitfall on Atari 2600 at a neighbor's house, so this one.

Gen 3: n/a.

Gen 4: Zelda - Link's Awakening (Gameboy)
runner-up: Super Metroid (SNES - VC/Wii in my case)
My number one would be Turrican II (Amiga) but since it's restricted to consoles my vote goes to Zelda as it was the only console/handheld I owned in this period. ;)

Gen 5: Suikoden II (PS1)
runner-up: Tomb Raider (PS1)

Gen 6: Drill Dozer (GB micro)
odd choice, but I don't own any of the other consoles. ;)

Gen 7: Burnout Paradise (PS3)
runner-up: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
honorable mention: Uncharted (PS3)
Uncharted is great, but it was not as much of a time sink as Burnout was... and still is.

You know what I very nearly put KOTOR myself; I only choose Shenmue in the end because at the time it felt like such a fresh and innovative experience that in my opinion showed the potential of games to be something truly different.
I love KOTOR equally as an experience but I know that at least a part of the reason why is how in taps into my inner Star Wars fan and healed a lot of the wounds that the prequel trilogy created lol. Kotor turned me from a fringe RPG player to an RPG fiend as well :)
It was an awesome gen though, I had a lot of good moments with the DC/PS2/GC/Xbox/GBA.

Gen 2: Adventure (Atari 2600)
Runner up: Pitfall (Atari 2600)

The 7800 was the first system I owned and it played 2600 games. It started my love for the action-adventure genre and the platformer genre.

Gen 3: Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Runner up: Super Mario Bros. (NES)

I take that back, the NES started my love for the platformer genre, I just didn't own one at the time. SMB was the first video game I played all the way back in 1989. I didn't own my own copy or an NES until eight years later, late in 1997.

Gen 4: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Runner up: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (Sega Genesis)

I also skipped this generation for the most part, which really sucks because I'm just now discovering a lot of the great games I missed. More great platfomers. I almost want to put DKC 2 in second place, but its boss battles sucked compared to Sonic's.

Gen 5: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Runner up: Rayman 2: The Great Escape (N64)

Ocarina of Time is still my favorite game ever, and Rayman 2 started my Michel Ancel fandom.

Gen 6: Beyond Good & Evil (PlayStation 2)
Runner up: Skies of Arcadia (Dreamcast)

This whole generation is a little fuzzy. BGE is a goddamn classic and it was better than I remembered it when I replayed it last year, and SoA just left one hell of an impression. Probably the weakest gen for platformers.

Gen 7: The Orange Box (Xbox 360)
Runner up: Mirror's Edge (Xbox 360)

Maybe it's cheating to put TOB as the number one, but it's just too damn good. It's the best FPS package out there for my money. Mirror's Edge has the freshest take I've seen in platformers in a long time. It was an immense joy to play and replay again and again. There are so many great platformers this generation that ME being second to TOB actually says something.

Gen 2: Ms. Pac Man

Gen 3: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
Runner Up: Super Mario Bros. 1

Gen 4: Streets of Rage 2
Runner Up: TMNT 4: Turtles in Time
Honorable Mention: Mega Man X2

Gen 5: Tekken 2
Runner Up: Castlevania: SOTN

Gen 6: Final Fantasy X
Runner Up: Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
Honorable Mention: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Tekken Tag Tournament, Devil May Cry 1 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City & San Andreas

Gen 7: Street Fighter IV
Runner Up: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Honorable Mention: Blazblue: Calamity Trigger

All I know is those Gen 7 choices will change before it's all said and done. Gen 6 had my head hurting but I don't think I had more fun with a game that Gen that wasn't FFX. It was one of the games I had early on and it was a masterpiece to behold. Everything else are choices I'll live and die by. There are games I discovered later after that Gen was over but I wanted to keep the choices to that mindset and time frame to be fair.

Gen 6: Halo: Combat Evolved
Gen 7: I'm gonna go ahead and say Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Not a perfect game, but playing it just makes me really happy somehow.
