GAF: Your Favourite Games from Console-generation's 1-7 (using Wikipedia's timeline)

Wikipedia's collected articles on the history of gaming work around a constructed timeline. The backbone of this history is the assumption that we are in the Seventh Generation of gaming. Distributed across the successive numbered generations are all released consoles, ranging from the Magnavox Odyssey (1972), to the PSPGo (2009).

I thought it would be interesting to list our favoured game (one from each generation, with an optional runner up), using this timeline as a construct:

Wikipedia said:
The First Generation

Magnavox Odyssey -- Tele-Spiel ES 2201 -- Atari/Sears Telegames Pong -- Coleco Telstar -- Nintendo Color TV Game

The Second Generation

Fairchild Channel F -- RCA Studio II -- Atari 2600/2500 -- Magnavox Odyssey -- Mattel Intellivision -- Vectrex -- Emerson Arcadia 2001 -- ColecoVision -- Sega SG-1000 -- Milton Bradley Microvision -- Nintendo Game & Watch

The Third Generation

NES -- Sega Master System -- Atari 7800 -- PV-1000 -- Epoch Cassette Vision -- Supergame VG 3000

The Fourth Generation

Sega Mega Drive/Genesis -- SNES -- Nintendo Game Boy -- TurboGrafx-16 -- Neo Geo -- Sega Mega CD -- Sega 32X -- Amiga CDTV -- Philips CDi -- Atari Lynx -- Sega Game Gear

The Fifth Generation

Sony Playstation -- Sega Saturn -- Nintendo 64 -- Jaguar -- 3DO -- CD32 -- Pippin -- Virtual Boy -- Nintendo 64DD -- Sega Nomad -- Gameboy Colour -- NeoGeo Pocket -- Wonderswan

The Sixth Generation

Sega Dreamcast -- Sony Playstation 2 -- Microsoft XBox -- Nintendo Gamecube -- Nintendo GBA/SP/Micro -- Nokia NGage

The Seventh Generation
(Present Day)

XBox 360 -- Nintendo Wii -- Sony Playstation 3 -- Nintendo DS/Lite/i -- Sony PSP/Slim/Go -- Ipod/Iphone

My choices:

Gen 1: Pong (Atari/Sears Telegames Pong console)

Gen 2: Breakout (Atari 2600)
Runner up: Dig Dug (Atari 5200)

Gen 3: Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Runner up: Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) (NES)

Gen 4: Yoshi's Island (SNES)

Runner up: Final Fantasy IX (PS1)

Gen 6: Okami (Playstation 2)
Runner up: Metroid Prime (GC)

Gen 7: Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Runner up: Portal (360)

So there they are. Feel free to pick my opinions apart if you like. On reflection, I find it interesting that over the decades I favour a range of different genres.

So, I put the question to GAF: What games are your generational choices?

(Read before posting: We're not including PC developments due to generational ambiguity, so console games only please. If you've not played a generation, feel free to indicate this or leave it blank.)

I think generations 1 and 2 are a complete enigma for most of the current gaming community. The games were good for what they were, but they were very of the moment experiences which didn't inspire fandom in the ways that the vast worlds and great soundtracks of NES onward would.

And its an age thing, of course, but many young gamers DO go back and educate themselves on old games.... but they surely don't go back beyond NES.

Gen 1: Not qualified to make a choice.

Gen 2: Centipede (5200)
Runner-up: Super Breakout (5200)
[both of these are made 100x more awesome by the 5200's Tracball controller, which is far and away the best peripheral of all time.]

Gen 3: Super Mario Bros 3 (NES)
Runner-up: Contra (NES)

Gen 4: Super Metroid (SNES)
Runner-up: Zelda: LttP (SNES)

[Please come back to us, Awesome Konami of Old.]

Gen 6: Resident Evil 4 (GC)
Runner-up: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (GC)

Gen 7: Batman: Arkham Asylum (360/PS3)
Runner-up: Rock Band 2 (360/PS3)
[Tough damn decisions here, too. Regardless of its freshness, I'm confident in voting Batman; I've already been through it twice within a month or so of release, it's almost certainly going to be my new Super Metroid-esque "play through this once every year" type of game.]

Man, I feel bad at the Sega neglect here. I love plenty of Gen/Saturn/DC games but all of them got edged out.

SERIOUS BUSINESS
1: pong - we had it i guess
2: Adventure - it's ludicrous to say that somehow a line was crossed with the NES that somehow made fandom possible. There was just more space to fill in the details on your own.
3: Zelda I - I dismissed this until it was literally the only thing to do one weekend, and was amazed.
4: Super Mario World - In late high school, this pretty much rekindled my gaming urges. I snuck off during parties at my friends house to 100% this over the course of a couple months.
5: Mario Kart 64 - Block Fort is still unmatched in one on one play. Hundreds of hours and still more to learn.
6: Vice City - pinnacle of the series and the generation, just great in every way
7: Braid - everything I love in games distilled to 190 proof

Didn't really come in till Gen 4, so I'll start there.

Gen 5: Syphon Filter on Playstation. Mostly the first one.

Gen 6: The Grand Theft Auto series. And I liked Splinter Cell and Halo too.
