From today’s Nintendo Direct, can we say that Switch 2 won’t come until at least 2024?

That's like one of Nintendo's only good games at this point.

Just a little tit for tat there, i’ll pick up strikers at some point :p

Esp. since I don’t own any striker games.

Kirby was by far the best looking thing at the direct, it’s about time they put in effort to that series again. The 3ds stuff was good but more of the same.

They could go with Switch and Switch 2 in parallell I guess but the dream died a little that’s for sure. I’m surprised at how bad everything looked too, 90% looked like cheap filler content. Let’s pray that Sony don’t buy Square Enix and rip their games from Nintendo platforms, the new generation of pixelated 3D RPGs are somewhat nice.

  • BOTW2 December 22
  • Smooth transition from SW to SW2 which makes it irrelevant when the MK content is fully rolled out, backwards compatibility and all
  • Prime4 maybe crossgen

Chip shortages means any product released now will be prematurely aged. What I mean by that is by the time it's in plentiful supply, the hardware will already be old and you would have lost any wow factor that the first 12-24 months of a new console usually brings.

So long story short: you'd be wasting your ammunition. Keep that powder dry. Release when there are enough chips to actually make a splash.

Gay porn is where it's at.
Was there any doubts? The switch is selling like crazy, software is selling like crazy, and chip shortage is expected to last until 2025/2026

Add to that ninendo's comment how we're only halfway through it's lifespan and there you have it

You know Switch is in exceptional form when Valve takes time out from launching Steam Deck to turn up to a Nintendo Direct.

You know what I'd really like to see, a fanless revision. I reckon the chip could probably be miniaturized enough to not require a fan these days. I'd really be into an update like that. No dust issues, and a solid state design that could in theory last for decades. Great for collectors I guess.

- MK8 DLC waves will run to the end of 2023. This should provide additional content for 2023

- No BOTW2 news today, it’s more likely that BOTW2 is a 2023 release

- We know they’re still working on Prime 4, which is prolly a 2023 release

- They announced 3 additional heavyweights first IPs today: Switch Sports, Mario Strikers, Xenoblade 3, in addition to all other already planned release Splatoon 3, Bayo 3, Rabbid 2, Kirby. All these solid titles will support Switch sale this year and next year
Yesterday's direct was for the first half of 2022 (the only tease being Xeno 3 for September). That's why you didn't see the other heavy hitters.

Well there's Earthbound, Chrono Cross, LiveALive, Zelda.... so... now we don't need a Switch2? Lol.

The people who think that there will be new switch or even new Mario kart clearly don't follow switch numbers

It's known that the new machine from Nintendo Will not be launch until 2024

Yeah, 2022 is super stacked in terms of software for the Switch now. I definitely don’t think we’ll see a new console until 2024/2025 at this point.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Well its still outselling next gen consoles like Playstation 5, not to mention the much more appealing software library

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
How exactly are Sony or Microsoft "pushing the industry forward"? Do you just mean graphics? Over abundant MTX? Shallow gameplay systems? Overly focused narratives to a detrimental degree? GAAS? Unfinished games released as F2P and filled with predatory mechanics?

Reality all 3 push the industry forward via having amazing games. Suggesting otherwise is silly.
dualsense is amazing though, imo it triumph over nintendo and xbox under this area.
And PSVR2 next.

Well covid and chip shortages are still a thing so the longer they wait to release the next switch the better. I wonder if we'll get some new switch type of consoles. Like another non switch switch for jus those who want to play games like switch sports I figure that version would be a lot cheaper without the screen and they should already have chips available to make it.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
2024?

You'll be lucky to see it before 2026. They simply do not need to release an "omega 4K ultimate" Switch no matter what people on forums might think. The OLED is your mid-generational upgrade, that's it.

The solution is so simple to me. Release a tv-only Switch Pro. You can crank everything up to 11 in it and run it at full power. That should run every Switch game at 1080p at least and possible even 60 fps. And all of us with 55-65 inch tvs will be happy for 2-3 more years.

Whatever plans there were for a Switch 2 in 2021~2022 were probably scrapped because Nintendo can make more money just selling their console that uses old hardware (thus fabricated in a less competed lithography process).

Steam Deck & friends might start taking off throughout the next couple of years though, and that may force them to release another console. in ~2024.

Regardless, Nintendo isn't going to budge as long as people keep buying their consoles and software.
I don't think Steam Deck and the like are going to make any real dent.

Nintendo are mainly about their ecosystem, which games being a major part of that and what they have in spades. Exclusive ones too. And the Switch is lighter and more portable (also something you absolutely would get for children).

Just by hanging around here, the people who would dump the Switch for the Deck or the like probably already have. They are the ones who post 'I already sold my Switch' etc.

Due to the chip shortage, the health state of Switch, and mostly Nintendo, I can see a proper Switch 2 (not a restylish, slim, oled, qled, microled, etc..) version, not sooner than 2030

No new games and no new hardware. Nintendo is selling a lot of the old games. Why would they need to release new games? Same for the Switch is still selling a lot. Nintendo fans don't care about graphics maybe better performance but not graphics. So Nintendo don't need a Switch 2.

I got one better for you. We may not see another Switch for 5+ years. It's going to be the GTA 5 of Hardware. IF it continues to sell well, it makes 0 sense to not continue riding the wave. Also, factor in chip shortages! Sony can't produce enough PS5 to keep up with demand, same with series X.
Yep. Why make a switch 2 while the chip shortage is still going on? Any switch 2 games would also be on the og switch until the shortage is sorted out so not much need for one.

I'm sure Sony wished they had stuck to the ps4 or made a series s type of console to help with the shortage. They are leaving massive amounts of money on the table with these external factors. Nintendo too smart to do that

Not likely to do anything as long as it still keeps selling and there is no direct competitor. (steam deck doesn't count, not enough units being made to make Nintendo care)
Though I guess if you truly believe it's more of a console than a mobile it's falling way behind hardware wise.......so maybe a sliver of hope.

I don't think this Direct says BOTW2 will not come this year. They specifically avoided showing any of their holiday line up.
Yes. By itself, it implies that either BoTW2 will either be the big holiday title that most assumed it would be, or that it is not a 2022 title and that something else will be the big holiday title. But Nintendo also recently re-confirmed Zelda to be a 2022 title so we have little reason to think otherwise.

Since GameCube Era, Zelda has been used as a transition between console generations, but I hope this time they surprise us and release it in 2022. Either save Metroid Prime 4 for a cross generation game between Switch 1 and 2 or just save it to debut on Switch 2 in early 2024.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
A generation nowadays is 7 years. So my bet is 2024, or later.

I'll start to consider the Switch is winding down when they finally cut the price of the console itself. Once sales slow console prices historically get cut to keep up momentum. No momentum loss means no cuts. If Nintendo thought the Switch was mis-priced like the 3DS or was starting to lose steam they would already have knocked $50 off it's price.

The PS2 launched in 2000 and first cut in 2001
The PS4 launched in 2013 and first cut in 2015
The X360 launched in 2005 and first cut in 2008
The Wii lanched in 2006 and first cut in 2009
The DS launched in 2004 and first cut in 2005
The 3DS launched in 2011 and first cut in the same year

Personally, I was always leaning on the side of maybe an announcement in 2023, and a release in 2024, no reason to rush out a new device in the middle of a chip shortage, and while the current device is still selling extremely well without a permanent price drop.

It also gives Nintendo breathing room between PS5 and Series S,X initial releases to tweak design, get b/c compatibility in, and give it the right power to performance ratio. If they rushed something out just to compete with them they would be doomed to fail.

They sold over a hundred million units why will they make a new hardware right now when parts are hard to manufacture and supply constraints. They’re look at Sony reducing their unit numbers they aren’t going to do that to themselves. Oled switch is the best you’re getting.

Not sure why anyone thought it would tbh. Why would you announce a successor to a console that’s coming off the back of like the second and 6th-7th best selling years of any console in history?

The switch will be the best selling console in history by 2025.
