I don't think we can tell much by Forza sales with Gamepass being a thing.

Really good to SMTV being successful. Has a good chance to be the best selling one in the franchise.

Just for a bit of context, in 2020 the best selling game in the UK - FIFA - sold 2.2 million copies over the whole year. The second biggest game, COD Black Ops Cold War, sold 1.42 million. In the whole year. Physical + Digital.

The biggest selling game in the UK in 2020 sold approximately 1 million copies physically, so < 100k a month. The second best selling sold roughly 600k physical all year, or 50k per month.

In 2020 in the UK there were 42.7 million games sold in total, physical + digital. 24.5 million of those were digital sales, or 57%. That is up 74% over 2019. It's safe to say that digital has increased massively again this year, so even say a 50% increase in digital (when in reality it will likely be significantly higher) and a 30% total increase in game sales would give us:

Conservative Estimate for 2021:
Total game sales: 42.7 * 1.3 = 55.5 million
Digital sales: 24.5 * 1.5 = 36.7 million
Physical sales = 55.5 million - 36.7 million = 18.8 million
Digital:physical split for 2021: 36.7/55.5 : 18.8/55.5 = ~66.7%:33.3%

So when you're talking about monthly physical only sales in the UK, you're talking a few thousand copies in total from all games ranked 3-10 most of the time. Probably 20k for games 3-10k combined would be pushing it.

Now do people see why UK physical sales charts are irrelevant in 2021?

All numbers from GamesIndustryBiz.co.uk: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/artic...games-sold-in-the-uk-in-2020-uk-annual-report

If you're refencing the mentions of PS4 and PC in the code that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I expect a PC port on 6-12 months. Its possible a PS4 port could come later but I'm not too confident in that.

Considering how that leak is confirming a bunch of other stuff that slowly is being confirmed, I believe its very true. Knowing SEGA, they already have some port ready as they made many comments about porting to PC and other platforms, as in they didn't just solely state PC, but I felt it was obvious this was some timed deal or something.

Attacking every UK sales thread should = a warning or ban.

The hell is wrong with you people? Sales threads have been posted for years but now it seem that there has been a Discord meeting that instructed minions to attack every sales thread.

There's the Geforce leak showing it coming to PC and there's the PS4 reference in the code, but those are separate things. I think SMTV will be a Monster Hunter Rise situation where it comes to PC 6 months later.

Damn 80 % for Forza is huge even with digital download rising. As someone mentioned earlier, no way digital compensates for this huge drop.

The Gamepass effect or franchise fatigue? Or Both.
I mean there's no need to guess in this case, we know FH4 had 2m players on it's first week counting PC/Xbox sales and gamepass.

Also that FH5 had 1,8m players before the official release (which forced to buy the 100€ edition or some 50€ DLC it was?) and that by tomorrow (end of first week) there should have around 9-10 m million players counting PC/Xbox sales and gamepass too.

Hell i'd say it was already compensated even before it was released on gamepass, so it's not like there was a franchise fatigue. But about that Gamepass effect i actually think there's a chance it had an impact, after all FH4 , even with simply good launch numbers, managed to be the biggest and most played Gamepass videogame, and probably thanks to this, it is that FH5 managed to achieve 5x bigger launch than FH4, being the best launch for any MS's videogame so far.

Yeah it seems like some people are triggered by every sales thread since it exposes the truth about their favorite console.

They rather hear and believe PR from MS execs that everything is fine and dandy but hate it when actual numbers are shown.

Like you have mentioned, we had this same thread since forever but suddenly people are shitting on it and crying . Hardware sales and software sales don't matter apparently because MS said so for reasons.

I quite like these threads, but enjoy the Sunday drops from game industry biz more cause its more comprehensive in terms of the sales splits.

What these threads now exposed is that physical sales don't show the entire picture (actually, not even half the picture) so all the weeks of celebrating PS5s software sale superiority look hilarious in hindsight 🤭

Imagine when the damage control squad tries to say "It is irrelevant to 2021" games selling:

Week 1: 96.2k
Week 2: 51k
~ $9 million revenue in two weeks in a single country.

It is maybe irrelevante for your agenda because for Publishers and business it is actually very relevant.

Very few people are celebrating. They are just interested in sales and data. You are projecting.

Currenlly these physicals sales are all we've got, and the occational monthly digital split. So beggars cant be choosers when it comes to sales thread IMO. Its better than nothing.

Moving to GSD data for the digital and physical software market, just under 2.5 million games were sold in October, which consists of 1.25 million physical games and 1.25 million digital games -- a 50/50 digital/physical split.

Read the quote and tell me if physical is irrelevant with a strait face.

I'm not sure what weird narrative you are trying to create here because digital sales doesn't make physical sales irrelevant.

In any case we don't have digital for the second week yet but...

Physical: ~96.2k (~$6 million)
Digital: ~244.2k (~15 million)

BTW that is only CoD.

No one complains about Japan sales threads.
We only get part of the data, but it's better than none at all. It would be better if we got all the data, physical and digital, and not just %, but it is what it is.
Forget FH5's placement! There is not a single Sony game in the top ten. They must be in trouble in the UK.
It's getting harder to tell who is being serious these days :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Japan is the same narrative driven in the opposite form :D

They try to ignore digital sales in Japan threads... and here in UK threads they try to ignore physical sales.

Both are relevant and required to get the overall picture.

Yeap it varies from game to game... some games even have more physical than digital.
But even if it is 10% physical it is not irrelevant yet.

I'm 100% sure no publishers is thinking physical sales are irrelevant... even so in GAF some narrative drive posts tries to say so lol

Forza flopping CONFIRMED despite topping Steam top sellers for two weeks, still being #2 right now behind Battlefield and having 1.5M players in Early Access.

No one is attacking UK physical sales thread, but a lot of people are taking it for what it is, a small, ever-shrinking data point.

You and the rest of the Xbox fanboys would sing a different tune if FH5 was topping the chartz. Sales threads have always been a thing on gaf. Deal with it or dont enter it.

Just because your lord and savior Phil loves to hide them sales numbers whether its console sales or sw either way its gaming related news. Or do you want to ban any topic that doesnt suit your favourite plastic box? At least be honest about it.

But but ”Xbox is digital only”……. Really? as long as there’s physical media or/and HW being sold to consumers it be discussed! end off.

jk.

Forza is digital type of game, due to dlc, mtx. So buying it physical makes no sense.

Like the actual sales guy Chris said, the biggest selling Xbox console in the UK doesnt havea disk drive.

Take that as what you will when looking at physical sales in the UK.

Saying that, I don't want sales threads to go anywhere. I think they are worth it to have a view on the market. Its interesting.....it also makes for some incredible comedy posts from people who do not understand what the physical UK sales amount to in the overall grand view of things.

Well according to MS it makes sense to sell it physical otherwise it wouldnt chart now would it?
Sorry but your argument doesnt make any sense 😂

People can have their take on what they think is best between the two. thats not the issue here. We have people coming in a sales thread shitting themselves wanting to ban/censor a topic thats been on this forum for ages.

Physical sales and does not include digital. At the end of the week they usually announce the physical + digital data.
On Xbox, and especially the case of FH5, the percentage on digital is notably higher than on PS. Hence, the UK physical data is now useless to know the reality of sales.
The last example is COD Vanguard where 80% of sales on Xbox were digital versus 67% on PS5 (COD Vanguard digital + physical is 57% PS vs 43% Xbox)
Higher than what? What data is that statement based on?

Xbox One has a disc drive.
Cheers for that, you reminded me to update my table.

Using the 1st week physical split as the same after the rest of the month in the absence of data.

26pt gap between the digital ratio of ps and xbox is a bit weird, no?
Where is the digital split from? All I could see was this:
FIFA's closest rival this week is Far Cry 6 from Ubisoft. The game's boxed sales are almost 70% lower than Far Cry 5, which was released in March 2018. 47% of sales were on PS5, 24% on PS4 and 29% on Xbox platforms. The drop looks severe, but even in three years digital has accelerated significantly, and as we saw with FIFA, it almost certainly did a lot better than it appears.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Chris said half (50%) of Series sales are Series S in UK.
And Xbox games sales data aggregate Xbox One, Xbox One X, Series S and Series X.

No worries: I will try and explain the maths and the assumptions here also to sense check my formula. We are assuming that the first week physical split is representative of continuing weeks (shit assumption i know but ehh)

1st/After X weeks, you have 71% on PS and 29% on Xbox

In terms of platforms, 58% of sales were on PlayStation consoles, with the remainder on Xbox. (Nintendo Switch back at No.1 after OLED launch | UK Monthly Charts | GamesIndustry.biz)

Total split after X weeks, we have 58% on PS and 42% on Xbox

We also know that Physical was 47% and digital was 53%

So I am going to stick in numbers; lets assume there was 1000 copies sold in total;
we know 470 physical and 530 digital
we know that of that 470, 334 (71% of 470) is PS and 146 is Xbox
we know that of the 1000 total; sony sold 580 and xbox sold 420

so digitally sony sold 246 (580-334) and xbox sold 274 (420-146)

so sony sold 334 physical and 246 digital: 246/580 = 42.4%
so xbox sold 146 physical and 274 digital: 274/420 = 65.2% (think i have introduced a rounding error in my example)
so digitally sony sold 246/530 = 46% and therefore xbox is 54%.

That's the maths. I would like to see if my assumption is right or if we have a newer physical sales split that i can plug in.

US and UK

Xbox One dominated the 2014 holiday season in US/UK, which prevented PS4 from achieving network effects.

The PS4 clinged to its small lead (500k in the US), but Xbox One captured a 47% market share by the end of the generation.

In terms of revenue, Sony and Microsoft are neck and neck in the US/UK (if the PS5 takes a 2 million lead, it could change things)

Sony has a massive advantage over Microsoft/Nintendo in continental Europe, though. The whole continent remains at PlayStation entire disposal

Gaming Revenue (Three months ended September 30)

Average rate 1 US dollar = 110.1 yen

Sony $6.22 bn

Game & Network Services $5.86 bn

Music Mobile Gaming $0.36 bn

Microsoft $3.59 bn

10-Q

Nintendo $2.74 bn

Dedicated Video Game Platform $2.62 bn

Smart Devices, Playing Cards $0.12 bn

Geographical Sales Breakdown

Europe $0.66 bn

Japan

Japanese publishers are breaking records despite abysmal sales in their own country. This sounds familiar, doesn't it?

High end systems dominate sales of Japanese games, despite having low market share in Japan.

Unit sales – 1H FY22.3

Capcom 19.8M (Jap 3.6M; 18.2%)

Bandai Namco 19.6M (Jap 1.37M; 7.0%)

Square Enix 17.22M (Jap 2.27M; 13.2%)

Sega Sammy 14.04M (Jap 1.07M; 7.6%)

Koei Tecmo 3.65M (Jap 1.33M; 36,4%)

Total 74.29M (Jap 9.64M; 13.0%)

Bullshit... we got both... and physical sales are very relevant so do digital sales.

Get upset if you want, UK Physical sales have been proven to be a tiny fraction of the overall sales in the UK.

85% of videogame sales in the UK were digital last year.

77% of FIFA 22's UK sales were digital. 34% drop in physical boxed sales compared to the previous game. Digital downloads grew 37%.

I'm not saying UK sales as a whole are irrelevant, I keep pointing out, accurately, that UK physical boxed sales alone are largely useless and not proper evidence of how a game is really performing on a particular platform because it represents such a tiny portion of the overall sales picture, most especially when the highest selling SKU between Series X|S in UK is apparently the Series S by a hefty margin last I read.

Some might say we are downplaying these because they often favor Playstation, and I disagree, but people are free to believe what they want. My belief, however, is that people, even while knowing UK physical sales data is a wildly incomplete picture of how games are really selling, are doing something much worse than that. They're attempting to use that small and incomplete data belonging to the very smallest subset of sales data to make wild assumptions about game sales across the entire next gen xbox eco-system worldwide to fit with their narrative that Xbox owners don't buy games because of Game Pass despite all the data that keeps proving that claim wildly incorrect. That my friend is the real bullshit.

And with that I'm done with this thread.
