A PlayStation Store ESRB rating for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade has revealed that blood will be appearing in the game, which is notable because it didn't appear in the 2020 release.

The PlayStation Store listing shows that Intergrade will have the same overall rating as the original game, but with the addition of blood. Although Intergrade is an updated version of the 2020 release, it wouldn't make sense for them to add blood to old scenes so it stands to reason that the blood will be appearing in the Yuffie chapter that is exclusive to Intergrade.

Wish game companies would stop being pussies and just bump up most games to M rating already. You literally have a narrative where big swords and minigun limbs run amok, yet you wanna prevent blood from being drawn? Fallen Order was literally a worse game because of the lack of lightsaber dismemberment - the disneyfied piece of shit.

Finally harnessing the power of the PS5, to render blood. YES!

Honestly I didn't even remember the lack of blood in the game, but I sure DO remember all the swearing. That was a surprise.

I'm sure the blood will be minimal. OR... actually be used in the
laboratory
, like it should have been.

To be fair. The old Lucas Art games were like that too.

I get it, but games where it's too easy to win and lose tend to lose their audience.

If it was your company and your money you wouldnt say that. Adding blood and risking an M rating means losing out on millions if not tens of millions in revenue just because you made some purple stuff into blood. Explain that to your employees and share holders.

Star Wars is a kids IP first and foremost dude. Some story-related dismemberment is kosher but if you really wanted to be able to chop up every stormtrooper you in the wrong series lol.

Likewise, Final Fantasy doesnt generally need to go beyond Teen to tell its stories. I'd be down for an M rated ff but by the same token never felt like the stories were held back by the rating.

It's a kids IP but has violent depictions of dismemberment and lighting the protagonist on fire.

The M rating is hardly a debuff in terms of sales. Look at how many Sony games are rated M. A T rating isn't going to skyrocket Ghosts of Tsushima to 10-15 million sales. Gonna be nice seeing Cloud slash Sephiroth across his bare chest and only seeing yellow sparks come out.

And FF is very inspired by Star Wars. One thing they have in common is the enemy troops all wear masks so you can’t see their faces, so you don’t feel bad when you slaughter them by the dozens.

Literally one of the best selling games of all time is rated M.

Cool, I don't think the series really needed blood outside of like 4 scenes. Just doesn't really fit the tone in most places.

We get it, you're a grizzled badass who can't see why the ignorant masses make such a big deal out of blood.

Square Enix has always been adamant about keeping a Teen rating for mainline Final Fantasy games.

Expect blood to be kept to a minimum.

(not that I care really, it's unrealistic fantasy action and I don't need gore)

In what pearl clutching bizarro world do you live in where an M rating has EVER left a good game at a substantial loss?

I don’t know. I actually think M rated games attract more sales. I don’t think it’s coincidence that games like gta and mortal Kombat sell better than most games in their category. It seems like gamers these days love violent, gory and dark stuff.

By pure definition you leave out some of your audience. If an M rated game sells well that doesnt mean it would not have sold better with a lower age rating. Of course it depends on what kind of game you want to sell. If the whole point of your game is to be brutal (Doom, GTA, etc.) than yes, the M rating is a selling point. But the original FF7 had an USK rating of 12 here in Germany, so what would be the point of making the remake mature rated?

They were clearly pushing to not get a M rating for a reason. They said it was not possible to get blood in before, unless they changed it to M and they specifically did not want that because they were afraid that this would lower sales.

Look, if it is a brand new IP with zero name recognition then sure; an M rating is more of a gamble. Even then though good games often float to the top no matter how small. Word of mouth makes big waves.

So when you have an already well known and beloved IP (let alone the single most successful entry in said IP), rating it M isn't going to do shit to hurt sales. In fact it might pique the interest of fans who lost interest as they've grown older. There's always this idea that M or R ratings won't do well and it's been shown time and time again that if the product is good, it will succeed. At the very least for established IP's. Even kids will find ways to get their hands on it and you can bet many of them will double dip when they're older.

Hopefully this means they'll change the horrible purple blood during the trail of blood scene, that thing was iconic in OG FFVII because it portrayed Sephiroth as a crazy murderer and it was also technically his first appereance, the changes to the blood ruined that part IMO

Only by definition, in reality kids are everywhere in GTA online. Like everything else (alcohol / cigarette / porn) age restriction is an attraction for teenagers and they will find a way to access them.

But age restrictions in gaming are much more enforced (at least in some countries). There is literary no hurdle when going to a porn side (click this banner to confirm your 18 at best).Of course I played GTA3 and vice City. At a friends house. Who got it from his older cousin. That didnt generate a sale though. And again, thats GTA, a game build around causing mayhem and killing rando people. It has a history of attracting controversy and as such appealing to teens.

But we are talking about a game that is not inherently linked to gore and violence. And somebody please show me these head to head studies where they have the same game but with different age restriction and the one with the M rating sells significantly better (despite the game not being known for mature content, like in this case).
Yes M rated games can sell incredibly good, especially if that is part of their marketing, but there is a risk to adding this M rating to a game like FF7R, because its literally pointless and only excludes a possible part of your audience. And I dont think an M rating would entice more players to this. The game doesnt get better because the blood trail is now red.

If anything, I'm a bit surprised that the blood wasnt ok for the rating boards in the year 2020. There are enough games with blood and get a 16+ rating. And now the apparently back paddled on this too.

If you really think it's just about colors being different then you're as blind as the people who decided giving an M rating to this game (a game who's core audience have long since grown up) was too risky. The blood trail in the original was a major mood setter. It created an atmosphere of dread as you walked through Shinra's once bustling HQ; now stained with the blood of its workers. It felt like there was actual weight to what was happening.

The purple goo? What did that add to the situation?

Yeah this is the whole Deadpool convo you know, how superhero movies can't be R-Rated as it wouldn't make any money, lol, how wrong they are.

Also, I don't get it, guns, swords, missiles, constant fighting and cursing but a little blood is too much? Don't kids see blood on a regular basis? Like the ones riding inlines/skateboards, sporting events (soccer and such?) So what is the deal?

Kids are running around with their parents' credit card these days, they aren't going to have any trouble buying it digitally (look at how Fortnite is doing). Like buttons labelled with don't press or doors that shouldn't be opened at school, when I was a kid movie trailers that starts with the R rating logo immediately captures my attention before even showing what it is, I would think it's human nature to be curious about things prohibited from us.

That said there isn't going to be any meaningful study in this matter as there aren't enough, if any, real titles around that aren't significantly influenced by other factors to be studied from, so I guess we will have to agree to disagree here.

I don’t disagree with you in just bumping up games to M considering CoD sales. I will say that the Fallen Order comment is a bit ridiculous though because the Star Wars IP has been primarily geared towards a PG 13 or younger audience. Provide me with an M rated Star Wars game prior to Disney’s ownership.

Pretty sure the old Jedi Knight games had dismemberment.

Yes, they did, but they were still not rated M. The lack of dismemberment in Fallen Order is more in line with the films. Like you, I’d prefer it, but it is actually more consistent with the IP than the JK games. Things like this bother me though, just like no real blood in the Nolan Batman trilogy. I don’t understand it, but these were their choices.

It's adults projecting fragility onto younger people and the broader market. Kids, teenagers, hell even other adults. I guess once blood gets involved it's not pretend anymore. Can't show the consequences of violence! That's just too much for our fantasy epic revolving around sociopolitical clashes, environmental symbiosis, and the depths of the human soul.

It's weird because the ones saying the blood can't be there probably don't even care about the "morality" of it. They're just looking to prevent the (unlikely) potential loss of a few sales.
