So far I'm loving this game despite its flaws. The unpredictable fights and the A.I reaction is very amusing I would just wait in the bush and watch the chaos happen.

Obviously the very American gun loving theme of this game triggers the likes of Polygon.

I really cant decide if I'm struggling with this...

I shot one of the flame thrower guys in the head with a sniper rifle and he just turns round and sets me on fire and kills me.

Me too, game feels unfairly hard sometimes. One of the perks should be "player gets left the fuck alone to enjoy the scenery"
I started fishing and the next thing I knew was that I was being strafed by an aircraft, WTF?! Just leave me alone for a few minutes.

Just picked this up on One X even though I have a 1080 rig, Best looking game on the X I've seen yet. Looks a generation above what's been in the past.

No idea why I can't edit a post? But here's a screenshot off the X for people to see the clarity of this in 4K.

I agree with this. Seems like every fucking vehicle on the road is the enemy and they instantly know it's me and start taking pot shots. Has every single member of the cult been issued with my photograph? It makes just driving from point A to point B a chore.

Well if you notice your photo on a wanted sign is plastered all over the county. When you change clothes the wanted signs change as well. Didn't know if you noticed.

9 hours in this game is a massive letdown. I also thought I knew what I was getting into. I like SP games. I liked FC4 and Primal. I would have been happy enough with a reskin of those.

1.
Enemy spawning. After you play enough to understand the rhythm of the enemy spawning, you'll know it's impossible to take a 500m drive unimpeded. Enemies spawn en mass at the most remote locations in the game, which I think are supposed to be the most remote places in the US. There's is absolutely no chill in Far Cry 5. Bears, planes, helicopters and truckloads of enemies (most of which look like they crawled out of a Louisiana bayou) will all visit you on every fly fishing trip you take. You'll actually find the most calm on the fringes of enemy bases, where I'm assuming the hyper aggressive spawning is disabled.

If I had to guess, I'd say this is all to make the game more exciting in co-op, but it's a giant swing and a miss. You never feel like you're in a remote location because there's always a crowd. It soon becomes a massive chore to go from A to B.

2.
Gun selection.

Here we have a game in the gun capital of the world, in a region that most likely has the most exotic guns of the entire country. So you'd think we would all be balls deep in all manor of bullpup autos and 10mm Glock handguns. At least with the spawning problems we'll be able to combat them with all manor of American guns right?

Wrong. Here we have a selection of guns that makes Battlefield 1 feel like a buffet of modern armaments. We've got about 3 different pistols and you start with the best one. 3 ARs which basically break down to an AR, AK and Mini 14. They all feel the same. The best sniper rifle I've found so far is the 45/70. and it's in the AR tree, even though it probably has the slowest ROF of any gun in the game.

There's also nothing to look forward to unlocking. You can see what you're going to get later and it all has the same stats as what you're using now. SMGs? How about 3 variations of the MP5, an Uzi and a Scorpion? All the MP5 variants have identical stats and the Uzi and Scorpion might as well.

There's some good buried under all this. The characters are good enough for a Ubi game and the locations are gorgeous. I also have a little fun with the AI buddy partners. I could deal with the guns if the spawn system was under control. As it stands it's hard to overstate how often small armies of enemies spawn. It's been stated in this thread, but it's perfectly normal to be 1km off of any paved roads, fly fishing, and all of a sudden you've got a plane doing strafe runs on your position. How this is not the focal point of every review blows my minds. Hopefully it's patchable and Ubi has the will to patch it (lol).

I didn't notice. But again, I'm in a vehicle. It doesn't make sense.

It takes me out of the game to a degree.

Seems to be a love it or hate it game, similar to Far Cry 2.

I love it though. I haven't played an Ubisoft game since Far Cry 3/Black Flag though and I imagine that helps alot.

Couldn't agree more with the bolded. Everything in the game is just unbelievably aggressive. Enemies everywhere. Earlier I passed three dudes with hostages on their knees at the side of the road, in about 100 metres. I'm pretty sure that wasn't intended.

I really wish Ubisoft would have given you the option to turn off the gun pickup.

I can’t count how many times I have died/messed up due to inadvertently picking up a weapon I don’t want.

I think my main problem with the game (enemy spawning) is a bug. Maybe I'm giving Ubi the benefit of the doubt. It's so over the top it doesn't seem intentional. I wish they'd make a statement on it.

This review has put me off, he's usually not far off the general views but this one he slates the AI and the unfairness of it. Would you say he's right?
Was going to get this until i saw this, sounds like the very first Far Cry in which the AI ruined the game for me.

I haven't seen the review but yes, the game is quite ridiculous even on normal difficulty. There's a constant barrage of enemies thrown at you almost every second you're playing. A moment a peace is no such thing in this game.

It ruins the game, to be frank.

It feels like the spawning is broken. I wish Ubi would say if it's intended behavior for the entire game to feel like a really hectic Just Cause mission.

Does everyone generally feel the same about the over aggressive/spawning AI?

I'm just not seeing it in my game. Seems just right. So I'm pretty confused...

It can be annoying at times I do agree, but my issue is that it gets to the point where I want to do things like fish and I am dealing with a bear attack out of nowhere.

Having said that, it hasn't made the game anywhere close to unplayable. I have a much much much bigger problem with the weapon switching icon intruding. It would be nice if there was an option in the menu to deactivate enemies and/or have them appear less frequently and/or only appear in spots where they must appear.

i got the platinum on friday, and I'm sad that it's already over. I wish one day we'll get a FC with achievements that actually take time & effort similar to FC2. I just plowed through the game on easy & finished everything within 3–4 days

the prologue was by far the best part of the game, and perhaps of the entire FC series – it's immersive & terrifying. The antagonists are all really interesting, especially Jacob & Joseph. It's just a shame that all 3 endings are dark + dissatisfying, but at least it feels like Far Cry. The supporting chars & their dialogue were the best of any FC, and it had an excellent OST esp. Only You ;)

but it's not perfect. The MP feels bland as usual, & most maps are just fan-made garbage with 2/5 stars. The co-op is an improvement, but still way too limited until they allow both players to progress. This also marks the first FC (since FC1) to lack creative healing animations, which disappointed me on a personal level

now to drop some wisdom:
  • acquire Wingsuit + Airdrop skills ASAP, and you will never need to use vehicles ever again. just fast travel to a nearby outpost, and you can glide about 1,000m to reach the next area of interest
  • use the first LMG, with all 3 attachments. very powerful all-purpose gun, even for stealth
  • if you wanna liberate outposts undetected for the $1k bonus, you just need to keep your distance, not necessarily be stealthy. send your guns for hire to do all the work, while you pick them off from a distance (via silenced sniper, ideally)
  • although you can do the story in any order, I found it makes the most narrative sense to liberate John's region, then Jacob's, then Faith's

There are a lot of collectable type things. Lots of side missions. Lots of stuff to do. Fills that open world itch I get here and there. Sounds like you might want to avoid it though.
Im playing it right now and im enjoying it. The main point was that i dont want useless fodder in the form of "here are 400 treasure chest spread around the landscape" its mindless busywork. Im now 5 hours in and it all comes organically, for instance you come across someone that ask you for help killing bears.

This is my biggest issue with the game, aside from a bugged quest. It is so damn annoying and I cant count how many times I have lost my weapon because of this. It is so bad I just stopped looting as a general rule.

No. I did for the first few hours, but now that I'm settled in and have a bunch of areas/bases cleared, it seems ok.

Granted, criticizing the story is kind of dumb in Ubisoft games, I have to admit that its frustrating that you can play a badass character and have that character do something inexplicably dumb in a cutscene that gets him/her captured so easily.

I was not really a fan of those forced sections as I felt they often dragged on way too long and were unnecessarily forced on the player.

I have completed two regions of the game and while the Resistance system is fine, I can't help but feel it could have been better. I basically captured outposts and did a ton of sidecontent and built up enough points almost exclusively on side content and by the time the final battle for that region had happened, I had done very few actual story missions.

By playing more of the story and overall advancing can't help but this game reminds me straight up Cinemax's Banshee..feels like dev team are a fans of the show and did alot of homework into the gm.

Isn't that simply a case of playing the game more organically i.e tackling missions as you come across them rather than leaving story missions till last? I may be wrong but I don't think there's a cut off point?

Yeah when I first started I avoided the main roads where I could as it made sense within the narrative structure so maybe that's why I haven't really seen this problem.

I just kill John Seed and liberated the region and it seems there's no more enemy spawning in the area, except around the 2 or 3 outposts I have yet to conquer. But I agree, when I want to just chill, explore the area and go fishing having enemies on every corner is annoying. I mean it's a very successful cult to have so many members and they seem to have some kind of deal with a car company or something because they sure have a lot of rides.

Still, I really love this game despite those little flaws (the gun pickup thing is also annoying and I really wish for a third person view for planes and helicopters) and I'm having a blast. Some of the story missions are really awesome and I like the people. Grace, Nick, Boomer and an archer sniper I've met (Liza McPherson) are great and some of the folks at Fall's End. In a way, I want to fight for them.

That's the biggest issue with the game for me. You're never left alone for more than 30 seconds to just do a quest or go fishing or just NOT be attacked. (The biggest issue outside of the annoying gun-pickup-when-I-just-want-to-loot-ammo-etc issue)

Agreed, mostly. Except that, at a certain point, the Cult apparently gains access to an air force the size of a medium sized first world country.
Those airplanes are really a pain the ass. I had Nick take care of them for me until i got the lock on rocket launcher.

The wildlife is hilarious in this. When did bison become Jason Voorhees? I don't want a fight, I'm running away, STOP FOLLOWING ME. Escaped from the bison, oh shit, there's a wolf hanging off my leg, kill it, argh, now it's a radioactive skunk. I'm glad I don't live in Montana, I wouldn't survive 10 minutes.

Joking aside, I'm still having fun with it, but boy, it can be frustrating.

I'm also having this issue and it's the reason I've put this game aside at least for the time being. Frankly, I'm getting my ass handed to me even on the easiest difficulty setting. Previous Far Cry games haven't given me too much of a problem. I think the issue for me is enemy damage, and healing capabilities. I'm spending all of my money on body armor that doesn't seem to last, making the potion things, and still struggling badly with enemies that can kill me in just a few hits. I put all my perks into increasing my HP and also unlocked having multiple companions but it's not really helping.

The last straw for me was when I got locked into a "boss mission" or whatever it's called, and I had no health packs and no armor and I have to infiltrate a bunker full of heavy-armor types that I can't perform stealh-takedowns on. I can usually take out 4-5 of them before they inevitably get me. I spent nearly an hour trying different ways of completing that mission but ultimately got nowhere.

The game looks amazing and I absolutely love the story. But I can't even bring myself to boot this up again it's so frustrating.

Don't know if this is any help to you, but tossing C4 at tough enemies can be a lifesaver. It's also pretty easy to gather the necessary resources to craft it.

Some random thoughts:

I hate how quickly some things despawn. I've seen things vanishing before my eyes. Once i was flying an airplane, saw an enemy boat, turned around to shoot it. It was gone.
Other time i spotted 3 angels near a house. I got sidetracked for a moment due to some random event. When i looked again the angels had been replaced by a regular peggie with a hostage.

The Seeds are not interesting. I've yet to explore Jacob's region. But Joseph and John are so dull. Faith was more interesting. Now that i've cleared her reagion i kind of miss her.

Why, oh why can't boomer and peaches get in the damn car?
