As expected Olive Town is the biggest launch ever for Marvelous in Japan and also the third biggest third party launch on the Switch.

The initial shipment for Bravely Default II seems to be lower than Octopath Traveler - so Square and retailers once again underestimated demand for one of their titles. Hopefully they can ship at least 30K second week.

Both Marvelous and SQE botched their games launch. SQE with under shipping issues and Marvelous with buggy issues.

Does MS actually do any marketing in Japan? Because that has to be the worst ROI imaginable. There is just no way for them to succeed in Asia.

Story of Seasons number seems quite high, do not recall previous entries numbers, but this one looks good.

Bravely Default with decent numbers, hope the game have some legs, and Switch still king, I wonder if the numbers for this years are higher than last year which would be insane.

And PS5 stocks seems to be okay now. I just wonder what all those PS5 users are playing, I believe it is PS4 enhanced games, but who knows.

It's sad to see that Pioneers of Olive Town is absolute dross, though. People are complaining left and right about it being a proper buggy mess.
I haven't heard about it being a buggy mess.

The main complaints I've read about are
- long load times
- bad dialog and voice acting
- events not being there at launch

With the first patch coming mid-March they hopefully address the long-load times - which is the biggest complaint based on WoM so far. In terms of dialog, voice acting and events that is something that needs to be worked on long-term with their Season Pass plans.
It's still early days and Marvelous can turn things around as this is the type of game that could be an evergreen if they address part of the major complaints people had with the game at launch.

I honestly think their best option is to scrap the Season Pass and provide that content for free to everyone.

I'm loving BD2 really fun and it deserves the good sales, especially the fact that we may never ever see turn based combat with Job system in mainline FF.

We will likely not see that simply based on theses games not even moving bigger numbers then the FF titles, but that being said......with this series existing, who cares?

If we call this Final Fantasy XVI what would that even do for you as its simply a name (even funnier when you factor that all FF are different and simply share the name Final Fantasy), so I've always seen the whole 4 heroes, default series, as simply the older FF concept without the name.

That is good enough for me tbh. We've gotten from asking for the concept, to now simply asking for it to be called Final Fantasy as some goal post, take the W, accept the victory lol I think anyone that loves turned based games should support them instead of just always asking for FF to NOT be action based, it ignores all the other turned based titles Square even puts out. (not to say you are doing that either as I know you support many turned based goodness). semi ot but I also wonder if they have a World Of Final Fantasy 2 in the works.

Decided to replay this gem

looking at those used numbers, I'm tempted to sell my copy now lol

2nd week: 01/01 [NSW] Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury - 97.955 / 347.973
3st week: 03/01 [NSW] Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (Nintendo, 02/12/21) – 74,811 (422,784)

Impressive

Why is Switch Lite above PS5, when PS5 sold more?

Copied directly from gematsu which was directly taken from famitsu formatting

Japan is such a smaller market. This is like if the Democrats won the election in a landslide, but Republicans kept bragging by how many more votes they got in Delaware.
January and February 2021 YTD hardware sales number

Japan - 1.45M
UK - 0.35M

UK 2020 top 10 total softwares sales physical+digital = 9.5M

Japan 2020 Animal Crossing NH software sales physical+digital = 9.2M

Ps5 will sell on par with Ps3 in Japan IF the right games hit the system.

10million + units in Japan is great numbers. PS3 sold more than PS4 in Japan and Close to the Wii number of 12 million. Just need the games
Final Fantasy 16 and Persona 6 will bring alot of numbers in and games like the next Dragon Quest, Metal Gear and some more classics

Yup and Sony should be aiming to increase beyond what PS3 did.... aim for the 15 million and begin by finding what it would take to achieve that. Whether they need certain exclusives or anime IP's turned into games etc.

Like you said Exclusives, Anime IP’s turned ino games + Lots of JRPG’s, niche games and older classics making a return

They need to aim for Playstation Vita numbers first before setting a goal to sell 15M units in Japan.

It's currently trailing behind WiiU.

Like Sony said in its Q&A in Feb, PS5 is on track to surpass PS4 sales in FY13.

Big jump in EU and JP over Jan, still waiting for Feb NPD.

Ps5 will sell on par with Ps3 in Japan IF the right games hit the system.

Software sales, the lifeblood of the console market, have collapsed in Japan.

The root causes are beyond PlayStation control. Turning the tide in Japan would require massive investments; a luxury you can't afford as long as Microsoft exists.

Xbox is losing market share to PS in the US. Going for Microsoft's jugular is a tall order. No distractions allowed. And Japan is a distraction.

I think they will be fine in Japan too when stock is better And software will pick up in the future. I dont think they’ve given up on the Market even with all the doom and gloom articles. I think PSVR2 will be a hit in Japan too.

But man the PS1 and Saturn were massive software sellers back in the day.. I thought the PS2 sold more games but I guess not

That graph doesn't tell the whole story as NSW is in the middle of its life. NSW total software is likely to end up above 3DS (especially when we factor in digital) so it's hardly a collapse.

The accelerated death of the PlayStation ecosystem in Japan is something to behold, I had expected this to happen with the Software line-up but I'm sure some third parties are shocked at the results this year. After Monster Hunter Rise launches Sony will have less than 1% of the software market for this year. The first major game Resident Evil: Village is still awhile away but by that time it launches all other PS4/PS5 games will drop out of the Top 40-50 - so we might be facing a situation of 7 million sales on the Switch, while PS4/PS5 have less than 200K.

Last year there were 9 games that surpassed 100K sales launched in H1:
January - Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon(>250K), Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
February - Granblue Fantasy Versus, Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers
March - Nioh 2
April - Resident Evil 3(>250K), Final Fantasy VII Remake(>900K), Trials of Mana
July - The Last of Us Part II(>200K)

Overall, there is not much that can be done to turn things around, the PlayStation 5 is too expensive, AAA development takes a long time, COVID has disrupted development of AAA games the most, and companies that went the multiplat/exclusive route on the Switch are already eating up the market share of Square, Sega and Bandai Namco in Japan.

They're doing very well now. Nintendo consoles are very hit and miss, and the Switch is a big hit.

But, this narrative that PS5 is struggling is BS. It sells as fast as they can make them in every market worldwide.

We don't really know what the demand for the PS5 looks like in Japan, as there is a huge demand elsewhere, it's entirely possible that a good chunk of what gets sold weekly ends up being resold outside of the country. When we have three consecutive weeks of over 50K sales we can say that it's selling as fast as they can make it. At the current time low supply masks the underlining problems of lack of actual software appealing to the Japanese audience, it's high price and large form factor. 30K in a week might look good for the PS5... but it's basically nothing in a market of Japan's size.

So I would caution applying WW demand to Japan, since it's still tracking way behind previous PlayStation launches and the software line-up is extremely underwhelming

Even if it sells 8M it will be a success. I said the same for the ps4 and it will end around 9.5M. If it wasn't supply constrained through the pandemic it could have hit 10M and easily if Sony were to also reduce the price a bit more.

The wii u was a flop. Let's not dig up it's corpse. It's the last traditional home console ninty will ever make.

I agree. Saying that either next-gen console is struggling is a reach. Even the XSS is mostly sold out everywhere and it's objectively shit (for that price).
