This week the PS4 version of Scarlet Nexus dropped out of the Top 50 due to the launch of Yu-Gi-Oh.
Next few weeks will be very slow for new releases that can chart until Tales of Arise launches. The launch of Tales should help Bandai catch up to Square Enix but it doesn't seem they have a chance of catching up to Microsoft or Marvelous until Super Robot Wars 30 and Dragon Ball Z Kakarot launch on the Switch.

Holy shit.

- Sony not even in the top ten publishers of Japan?

And people think it's dramatic to say their situation is grave in Japan :lollipop_neutral:

I'm just going to say it right now,

Sony will never take top spot in another console cycle without Japan. You can't possibly win a console cycle without the second biggest market.

Japan's domestic market is dying. The japanese console industry depends on PlayStation (NA/EU) to survive.

Nintendo is always one step behind PlayStation , even when it comes to Japanese matters.

Nope. The Switch Lite (handheld only) costs $100 less :lollipop_neutral: Yet the original model Switch with the home console feature is selling significantly better.

People are willing to pay $100 more to play Switch on their TV's as a console in Japan.

So the home console market is obviously not dead in Japan.
I mean compared to the PS5 and XSX.

If you are in the market for a handheld you might pay more for the high end version with detachable controller you can use for multiplayer and a TV dock. You aren't going to pay nearly $300 more for just a home console though if your draw is a handheld device.

That's a step up from the "it's a portable" excuse used earlier.

Why do you think the home console aspect of it is several times more desirable than the portable only option in Japan?

And what was your take on the Vita's sales in Japan?

Its not really an excuse. If you think the Switch numbers would be the same, software sales or hardware if it was a home console and not a hybrid/portable then I dont know what to tell you Kenshin. Lets just agree to disagree because we think differently on the matter.

The main Switch Hybrid is more desirable because it can do both, and who wouldnt want that? I play mine 90% in docked mode.

My take on the Vita is that Sony done a horrible job with the memory card and the games too. Many reasons

We can go around in circles and I can ask why the Wii U, Gamecube and N64 done not so great in Japan?

Its clear Japan is more portable centric and also having more Japanese centric games helps alot. Its why at the end of the cycles the PS3 and PSP started selling alot better in Japan

You have selected 3 publishers that were most aligned to Sony's Western strategy in Q1 and Capcom who are seeing growth on the Switch as we speak, Rise has surpassed 3.5 million in Japan alone, and the game will end up outselling the PS4 version of World WW. Stories 2 is looking like it will surpass 3 million units lifetime greatly outperforming the original.
Konami is about to have a game that will surpass 4 million shipped in Japan in 2021 and likely end up over 5 million in Japan lifetime surpassing any single Monster Hunter game...
For Koei Tecmo they had their biggest hit WW on the Switch recently; Age of Calamity passed 3.5 million and is likely already close or over 4 million, they have gone full multiplat strategy for some of their other big IPs like Samurai Warriors & Dynasty Warriors, just revealed a new musou game that will be exclusive to the Switch.
Marvelous are on their way to have two titles that surpass 1 million on the Switch alone in the shape of Olive Town & Sakuna with Rune Factory 5 getting a Western launch next year. No More Heroes 3 and more unrevealed game for the fall will lead them to their best year yet.
And finally we have a bunch of smaller publishers like Imagineer, Nippon Ichi, Neos having record results. I mean we have a good idea how much PS ecosystem is declining YoY(over 60%) while Switch is set to see growth in 2021 heading into it's software peak next year.

Considering Switch Software will be 2020 < 2021 < 2022 we are looking at around 30 million physical software just among the Top 100 games on the Switch next year(Splatoon 3, Arceus, Breath of the Wild sequel should be around 1/3 of this); that would mean that the Japanese market has been growing for 4 years in a row and record sales for Nintendo, Pokemon Co, Konami, Capcom, Koei Tecmo, Marvelous and a bunch of other smaller developers aligned to the Switch.
This year third party physical sales have already surpassed 6.5 million sales just across the Top 50 best selling third party games with close to 90% being on the Switch; there is a ton of third party games still to launch in 2021 with SMT V & Power Prokun Pocket R being the highest profile ones at this time on the Switch, while Tales of Arise & Lost Judgement being the high profile ones on the PS4/PS5.

Sony needs to Arise to the top of the standings soon or else they will have nothing but sad Tales to speak Of.

That's not true, the Japanese video game market is growing not dying. I agree that Japanese third parties have been slow to react.
