Very good week all round. Strong Nier debut, good hold for Rise and great to see increases in Switch hardware and evergreens. Will be interesting to see the hold for Winning Post 9 and debut for Judgement PS5.

The PlayStation take over continues. Top spot dominated by Nier for the ps4.

In more important news Ps5 now selling faster then ps4. The Vita is the next victim. Growth for the brand is positive.

Can't say the same for it's only remaining traditional console rival the Xbox. It's down 7k on the anemic Xbox one sales. Not a good look.

I just hope Sony can up their stock again with RE8 launching soon.

Are we assuming Scalpers are keeping the PS5 to themselves instead of reselling at higher price-point while quantities are limited?
Do we have any evidence of this? Because it sounds contradicting.

Can you share with us that "worst attach rate from the video game story" please? Because I'm only sawing a graph made with the top sellers games in retail.

You can go to Ree because Chris has the full compilation of that.
They don't have the data like I just said lol they use the TOP30 best seller games by week in the retail (Famitsu).

BTW that was the software attach rate for full 2014 PS4 based in TOP100 sellers and not TOP10 or TOP30.

You and Crisis doesn't have any attach rate data outside the numbers Famitsu give.

C'mon man you are better than that.
He is using the TOP30 Famitsu data per week.

He doesn't have the outside TOP30 data neither digital data.
He made up the claim using the set of data he wanted.

Again he doesn't have any ideia of the actual attach rate.

Famitsu releases a TOP100 each half-year and that can give a better picture of the retail market share than these TOP30 weekly... even so it lacks the numbers outside the TOP100.

People assumed PS5 was dead in Japan after the way lower launch numbers but nobody realized that Sony choose to delay PS4 launch in Japan to have enough stock while the PS5 have simultaneous launch with really low stock.

The demand for PS5 is way higher than PS4 in Japan.
Whatever Sony can supply the demand the gap will grow bigger.

Xbox Series numbers are somewhat shocking. I knew they would be low but based on what Phil Spencer was saying at launch, I expected sales to be higher than ~100 per week. There is no way that Microsoft can justify a major Japanese studio acquisition with those numbers.

Is that a good debut for Replicant? I did my part this time! (I didn't get to buy Automata at launch).

Well I believe it is pretty good for a remaster... it is won’t sell like a new release.

[PS4] NieR: Automata [All Versions] - 182,762 / 504,605
[PS3] NieR Replicant [All Versions] - 64,818 / 159,566

Higher than the original game it is remastered from, but not as high as the sequel. So round about what you would expect, probably a little bit higher.

The worst attach rate in the history of video game.

That doesn't show Scalpers are keeping the consoles to themselves. Scalped units eventually get in the final consumer hands.
It only shows that consumers are not buying PS5 games.

The major Japanese companies like Square Enix and Capcom will put their games on GamePass anyways. Maybe not day one, but they will be there, i expect them to make much more money on Xbox than they did last gen at least.

Though if you are looking for exclusive software Sony and Nintendo still have the upper hand

Japanese scalpers don't exclusively sell to japan they export to China and such, so it works a little differently

Otherwise hopefully we will see 2 monster hunter lines going forward, because why have 1 game when we can have 2?

Japanese studio aquisitions or japanese game pass games will only help to grow the playerbase outside japan. I highly doubt even with those games on the xbox japan will care. They simply don't give a fuck about Xbox there.

It's all about PlayStation in Japan now!

I do respect MS for trying another traditional home console but they could go the way of nintendo and this will be their last. Soon the market will be 100% Sony.

Two Monster Hunter lines and two Resident Evil lines is pretty much confirmed at this point. As I mentioned in the last thread, Capcom is smartly dividing their resources between PlayStation focused projects and Switch focused projects.

keep in mind the ps5 is making these gains while the ps4 was in the summer lull, golden week should be pretty good for ps5 then we'll see how it goes as the usual summer sales stagnation occurs, the pandemic might keep demand up,
we'll also see the effect of scalpers exporting to china with the Chinese launch on May 15th

With PS5 launching in China on May 15th, towards the end of the quarter we will finally see what actual demand looks like in Japan
But as mentioned before it's not so far an issue of hardware sales but rather an anemic software line-up by both Sony and Third Parties in terms of titles focused on Japan since the PS5 launch.
In terms of hardware, Sony will see growth compared to last year where they supplied very few PS4s during the first half of the year.

This situation will be further accelerated by Nintendo securing both multi-plats and exclusives from Third Parties and having a constant momentum from November last year, that will further accelerate in Q3... there is just a lot of major third party titles launching this year on the market leading platform in Japan that should do very well - Rune Factory 5 being the next game likely to set a franchise record for Marvelous. Monster Hunter Rise has already outsold Monster Hunter World in Japan and it sounds like Golden Week should give it further boost allowing it to almost catch up to the best selling third party game on the Switch - Momotaro.
Momotaro is also not slowing down, so it's likely that Konami will double it's previous record of 2 million by ending up with their first game to break the 4 million barrier in Japan.

Momotaro/Sakuna/Age of Calamity(Q4 2020)
Olive Town/Bravely Default 2/Monster Hunter Rise(Q1 2021)
Rune Factory 5/Samurai Warriors 5(Q2 2021)
Pro eBaseball Spirits 2021/Monster Hunter Stories 2/Shin-Chan: My Summer Vacation/Yu-Gi-Oh Rush Duel/Shin Megami Tensei V(Q3 2021)

Resident Evil: Village is the first high profile game on the PS5, and due to the PS4 SKU it's still questionable if the PS5 physical version will actually surpass 50K physical sales. Beyond Village, we have Scarlet Nexus coming out in June, than a lack of high profile exclusive title until September. So there is precious little reasons to expect this summer continue to demonstrate the trends we've already seen in terms of Software. Last year only across the Top 30 titles PlayStation 4 games managed 2.5 million physical sales, Nier Replicant is the first entry of a PS4 game into this year's Top 30. In terms of third parties, Sega demoted the guy who was a big Sony supporter, Bandai are the other company closely aligned to the PS ecosystem but if their titles flop.. well they might also demote the guy who is a big Sony supporter and we have Square and Capcom who now both seem to spend an equal amount of resources supporting both Nintendo/Sony with exclusive titles & multiplats. When you have a multiplat release it's fairly obvious that this isn't really helping Sony in terms of winning back their Japanese audience, which is likely entirely lost unless they make a pretty sweeping change in their overall strategy for both Japan and the region.

Cyberpunk 2077(Q4 2020)
nothing(Q1 2021)
Nier Replicant/Resident Evil:Village/Scarlet Nexus(Q2 2021)
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade/Tails of Arise(Q3 2021)

Otherwise hopefully we will see 2 monster hunter lines going forward, because why have 1 game when we can have 2?

We don't have evidence to point any of this. Even if we work with the hypothesis, the units remaining in Japan are still not buying games.

The most plausible reason IMO is simpler: there is no compelling software now for the Japanese audience.
Consumers buying PS5 as a PS4Pro+, to play their old games with better performance.

Anecdotal, but this is exactly what I'm doing with mine since Demon's Souls.

lol

Wtf is wrong with current generation that always make big assumptions based on limited data? He`s preteding to know something based on absolutely nothing...

that chris1964 poster is an oldie. He’s the guy who did all the Japanese sales threads on GAF since like the PS2 days

I’ve noticed a lot of “classic” GAF users have migrated to reset era?

We don't have evidence to point any of this. Even if we work with the hypothesis, the units remaining in Japan are still not buying games.

The most plausible reason IMO is simpler: there is no compelling software now for the Japanese audience.
Consumers buying PS5 as a PS4Pro+, to play their old games with better performance.

Anecdotal, but this is exactly what I'm doing with mine since Demon's Souls.
Some one repeatedly posted evidence of scalpers buying to export in earlier threads,

This is my theory too. So far there isn't that much which Japan would be interested in, but that will improve with Village, Demon Slayer and Tales of Arise coming this year.

Nier's rise and consolidation as an important franchise is a hell of a happy story. I hope that ensures a big-budget next-gen Nier.
Agreed, but hopefully not too big-budget. Gotta keep it weird and keep it risky, or it's not Nier anymore. Although I'm sure Yoko Taro would have it no other way.

How many units?
Don't know, that's why when after the may 15th Chinese launch well see how much it effected demand
It could be substantial it could be small we don't know
In the US about 10% of units are scalped to eBay and then of course more scalped to Amazon and Via Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace and whatnot so you know in the US maybe 20% pass thru scalpers
But of course in the US you know they're all going to the US so it doesn't really affect how many players have the console so if you know it could be similar to the US or 20% of scalp could be lower could be higher the rules and incentives are all different so will know better once like I said the Chinese launch occurs
but historically Japan's Hardware Sales have always been driven hard by software
The absolutely abysmal software sales in Japan for the PS5 are really an anomaly if scalping exports aren't a big thing

Yeah, Playstation sales are not great in Japan.

But Switch is a monster. That's insane.

Xbox Series numbers point to one thing - MS mainly produces Azure server blades right now. Maybe it is a right thing consider the shortage of hardware from GPU to possibly hard drives.
