Momotaro becomes the first third party game to surpass 2 million sales physically on the Switch, Monster Hunter Rise and Minecraft should follow it's lead in the coming weeks(MHR), months(Minecraft)

Big drop for Olive Town as expected, that patch can't come fast enough. Usually games like this with good WOM manage around 60% drops. Hope they delay Rune Factory 5 if it's facing similar problems.

In terms of Bravely Default 2 this means that the initial shipment was sold out, so it will be interesting what type of third week it will have - I'm expecting it to drop very slightly and manage over 15K sales next week, also to be ahead of Olive Town's third week result. Seems the game isn't having the large scale shortages Octopath experienced so it's path to 200K will be pretty straight forward.

On the hardware side with three weeks left to go to the Quarter all signs are pointing towards Q1 2021 > Q1 2020, this should will be the trend through-out this year by the looks of things. With the Pro expected to drop later this year and a lot of momentum from games launching on the system.
The main thing is not whether it will clear 1.7 million Switch did in 2020 but whether it will be able to surpass DS's best Q1 result of over 1.9 million, with Famitsu not tracking the Nintendo Store it's looking likely that shipments for Japan will probably break some all time records for Nintendo for Q1 in the country for a single system.

a stupid pun about trains and a Japanese folk legend/game series turned into a board game about trains, apparently quite popular when played on trains

I think changing 伝説 (densetsu "legend") to 電鉄 (dentetsu "electric railway") is pretty minor considering that Hudson are so train-crazed that they even named the company after the JNR Class C62 4-6-4 "Hudson" locomotive. Oh, and when they designed the PC engine they assigned part numbers starting with "HuC62" to the custom chips, also named after the train.

Imagine if we had seen a +10 years old game in the top 10 on a constant basis. That would've been amazing.

so when it passes the ps2 comfortably next year will it still be pretty bad? or the year after that when it tops the 3ds?
They haven't counted PS2 sales since 2013.
3DS is a portable and portables are the most popular thing over there hence the Switch sales.

Gaming isn't big over there anymore period.

Console gaming ain't big over there any more but I get the feeling that you like to conflate Gaming with some restricted view of what gaming 'is'

  • Momotaro has greatly outperformed previous evergreen titles on the Switch in Q1, game is heading towards at least 1.5 million sales this year
  • Ring Fit and Mario Kart 8 will greatly outperform their last year result, in the case of Ring Fit it's still supply constrained and selling at a premium

This year is definitely the peak so far for the Switch Third Party support, so the 2014 peak of the 3DS will be an interesting comparison.
Level 5 had an year that I think can be matched by Capcom in 2021, while Konami is looking likely to be able to match Capcom's result, and Marvelous so far is the publisher that is most likely come into third place.
With the Pro coming out in the second half of the year and largely unclear line up for third parties it will be a very interesting to track how the Top 20 performs against 2014. At the moment Third Party Sales account for about 16% compared to 2014's Total and it remains to be see if Capcom will be able to match Level 5 due to Monster Hunter Rise, Stories 2 and the rumored Ace Attorney game.
Overall Risé's opening should put this Quarter to around 4 million, Densha GO! is the other game that could do well, Bravely Default 2 & Little Nightmares 2 continue to have stock issues, so they could end up higher compared to their current total.

Everyone moved out and Nintendo is the only guy left in a ghost town.

No wonder Nintendo market cap has fallen 20% since 2007 while Sony's has tripled in the same period.

What is the exact point you're trying to make here? That shipments of physical games were lower in 2010-2019 than they were in 1996-2005? Given the appearance of digital I'd say that's almost an inevitability.

It also ignores japan's aging population, japan's population of young people (under 30) has dropped like 25% since then

In terms of Monster Hunter Rise, it will be interesting how much Capcom is able to ship for it's launch.

Top 10 Launches Switch/PS4/3DS
  1. [3DS] Pokémon X / Y (2013) - 2.096.050 <80-100%>
  2. [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon (2016) - 1.905.107 <80-100%>
  3. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020) - 1.880.626 <80-100%>
  4. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 (2013) - 1.875.115 <80-100%>
  5. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (2014) - 1.617.949 <80-100%>
  6. [3DS] Monster Hunter Generations (2015) - 1.542.104 <80-100%>
  7. [3DS] Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (2014) - 1.534.593 <60-80%>
  8. [NSW] Pokémon Sword / Shield (2019) - 1.364.544 <60-80%>
  9. [PS4] Monster Hunter World (2018) - 1.350.412 <80-100%>
  10. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits / Fleshy Souls (2014) - 1.281.096 <80-100%>

Difficult to envision them shipping over 2 million with digital also being a factor but I can see the initial shipment being at least 1.75 million
Overall they wouldn't go wrong with a shipment that's larger than New Horizon, all signs point to this competing with the biggest launch on the system in Japan if there is enough supply. There is a small chance they ship more than Pokemon Company did for X / Y, but that really would depend on retailers pushing for a larger shipment knowing that they would need to be able to meet demand and not have stock problems for the game.
The save prognosis would be for the launch to land between MH4 Ultimate & Sun / Moon

I'm going to go with a 1.65 million opening myself, but over two million when digital is added in.

The real advantage for Rise is that it should have very strong legs since Switch hardware sales are going to be pretty high this year.
