I know it won't happen and Nintendo hardly ever likes to give away things for free. But I wish they would do something like Sega did with the Saturn 3 game desperation pack back in 96?

Nintendo switch packaged with Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey and something else, and keep the price of the Switch the same. It would be funny to see how many more Switch units they could crank out. The fact that they haven't had to use this type of technique is amazing. But it's something they could do when the decline starts.
Not technically Nintendo, or maybe it is, but it's happening at ebgames here:

On a side note, Australia seems to have Switch stock fairly regularly, OLED included, even managed to grab ps5's and Xbox's, what a difference from the 90's.

Yeah an official bundle like this with price cut, they can really extended the life of this things with some marketing gimics!

I’m not seeing it. The biggest japanese games of this year on playstation aren’t on switch and vice versa.

Monster hunter rise - switch
SMTV - switch
Bravely Default 2- switch
No More Heroes 3- switch
Monster Hunter stories 2 - switch
Disgaea 6- switch (us)

Tales of Arise - playstation
Resident evil 8 - playstation
Demon Salyer- playstation
Guilty Gear- playsation
FF7 Intergrade - Playsation
Nioh 2- Playstation
Yakauza - playstation

Nintendo and Sony aren’t in any sort of bidding war over exclusive japanese software. Not like microsoft and sony is for western software. Usually when japanese publishers make switch games they make them specifically for nintendo hardware.

The generational gap and utility of the switch make this almost stupid to compare hardware wise so why compare them sales wise?

There are some exclusives yes, but they are the minority. The default position for most Japanese third parties now is PS4/Switch (with Xbox and PC sometimes added on). To give you some examples just from games released in Japan this year:

  1. Super Robot Wars 30
  2. Samurai Warriors 5
  3. World Ends With You Neo
  4. Winning Post 9
  5. Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires
  6. Blue Reflections: 2nd Light
  7. Tsukihime
  8. Little Nightmares 2
  9. Ninja Gaiden Collection
  10. Fuuraiki 4
  11. Megaton Mushi
The higher budget games like some of the ones you listed are not representative of the whole Japanese industry. That may change in the future and we may see the smaller companies drop PS4 without adding PS5, but we can't say that for sure just yet.

Yeah but those aren’t really big selling games. They are mostly AA/indie level games that i referred to being preferable for development on nintendo. The notable japanese releases this year have all been developed specifically for the switch

In lieu of developing for the PS4/PS5. A decision was made by those developers to put resources toward a Switch game and not a PS4/PS5 game. The two consoles are both competing in the same space, whether you want to acknowledge that or not. And again, if you would rather compare it to a home console only, the Wii U as far as I know is still outselling the PS5 launch aligned.

Yes, plenty of AAA companies specifically make software for the switch. They also make software specifically for the playstation and/or xbox. Not in lieu of anything, thats how 3rd party multiplatform companies operate.

They also make mobile software specifically for phones. Sony is not missing out on what a company make for nintendo because they’re getting their own exclusives. Same deal with square enix, they made bravely default and triangle strategy for the nintendo and they’re making final fantasy and Forspoken for playstation

And I’m sure sony is happy with the sales of the ps5 versus the Wii U at this point, considering its already outside it globally within a year

So why is it that when we start saying, “why does the switch feel so inferior performance wise, or graphically, why is it missing so many features even last gen consoles had, why does it not do x” the excuse is always because it is a portable console?

Then, when we start talking about sales and mindshare all of a sudden the switch is a home console leaving microsoft and sony in the dust?

It’s like theres an agenda surrounding nintendo that people use to downplay or push some narrative about whatever console they dislike. Unlike the xbox and playstation there is very little actual crossover in software between the nintendo. They pretty much specialize in 1st party games and smaller AA and indie, while the other companies focus primarily on 3rd party software.

It makes no sense to me otherwise
Because the physical form factor of a portable introduces limits in the same way that being in a laptop form factor limits a PC. That's just a physical reality. You wouldn't say a gaming laptop isn't a gaming PC though, even if the reasons that push you to buy one over the other are very different.

Meanwhile, the Switch shares the majority of its third party library, its inputs, and a good chunk of its audience with PS/XB. They're sold in the same dedicated gaming stores, covered by the same websites, featured on the same shows in the same awards categories. It's dedicated gaming hardware; trying to shove it in the same category as an all-purpose device like a phone makes little sense.

Honestly, it's the fanboys/anti-fanboys who keep trying various methods of accounting (It's not a console! It's a different generation! Etc. etc.) to make sure the Switch doesn't compete with their beloved boxes are the ones who come across as trying to downplay something or push a narrative. (NOTE: I'm not saying that's you. It's just the same flawed argument.)

The Nintendo Switch, Xbox and playstation must be compared against each other because they are literally competing against each other. Each one is fighting for market share and mind share of the consumers. They try to come to your house first because you are less probably to own more than one console (if you don't believe that NSW is a console, that doesn't matter. Less probably doesn't mean low).

Even in households where you would have all three consoles, the competition is still on. Every dollar you spend on a game on one of these consoles is considered an opportunity loss for the others. You are less like to keep buying games at the same time on all consoles and you would find yourself getting occupied with one of them, maybe 2 max.

The switch is a companion console, nintendo themselves will tell you they aren’t trying to get people to buy a switch instead of a playsation or xbox or pc they want you to buy it alongside those consoles. Not only that but they want you to buy multiples of them.

In my very anecdotal experience I’ve yet to meet many people who only game on a nintendo, that game often

That's funny, because I consider the Switch and Xbox Series S to be quite chummy in my household. I'd also consider the Series S to be the compadre console to my Switch.

First of all, you're in a Japanese sales thread so why are you talking about worldwide sales. As far as I know, the PS5 has not outsold the Wii U in Japan yet. What's your next argument? Japan doesn't matter?

And yes, those exclusive games from third parties on Switch are developed in lieu of games on the PS4 or PS5. If those dev teams were not working on Switch games where do you think they would be working? On the PS4/PS5. Mobile games is a completely different ball game, and you know that. Look at any of the offerings from Capcom or SE on mobile and tell me with a straight face it's the same thing. You can't do it.

Yea, no one expected Japan to go all in on mobile devices for gaming. Japan is all about small spaces, even the largest house is smaller than the average small house from other countries. So space is definitly a thing. Also Nintendo is just a juggernaught over in Japan and always will be. PS1 and PS2 were really the only times where Sony overtook Nintendo. Once the Gameboy advance and DS continued growing, I think it solidified the type of games Japan seems to buy in droves.

Pokemon, Animal crossing, Monster hunter will forever make Nintendo in that region the primary gaming device for most. The fact PS4 did what they did after disasterous PS3 in Japan was a miracle, but even with selling 8 million, Nintendo shits that number out with 3DS, and now Switch.

I think thats why there's been a shift in where headquarters is. Though Japan is still big, Europe, UK, USA are bigger markets. Unless Sony has some kind of portable system like a steam deck where PS4/PS5 optimzied games using some kind of FSR/FIdelity Fx upscaling can be used to play all first party and exclusive third party from capcom? I don't see anything significantly changing even when shortages are ironed out. It's still too big of a console, and too expensive for Japan. A portable playstation thats dockable and plays all Sony titles is really the only thing they could do. And honestly at this point Switch/Nintendo is too saturated to even think about this.

Which is why I think Sony is pushing PC releases so hard with steam deck coming and actually being very sought after in that region.

There is because they serve different functions and aren’t direct competitors.

It’s like comparing cell phones to consoles cause they both play games

Docked or undocked, the Switch is in direct competition with Xbox and Playstation. Tens of millions of people globally have chosen to exclusively only own one of these consoles and even when they own more than one console, every game they buy for one console versus another impacts the others' bottom line.

These are dedicated gaming devices. Cell phones are not.

I agree that the biggest games this year have not been on Switch and PS4, but when talking about "crossover in software" between these two platforms we have to look at all software available, not just the 5-10% biggest games. The fact is that the majority of third party games released in Japan are on both systems, so there is a lot of crossover

This is less the case for the biggest games because:

1 - Games with big budgets like Resident Evil Village can struggle to run o Switch
2 - Nintendo and Sony are more likely to step in to secure deals for the biggest games. For example, Nintendo was willing to step in and secure SMTV as a launch excusive, but they weren't interested in doing the same for SMT III remake. That's why the bigger game is not on PS4, while the smaller game is.

I wonder when is Sony going to be able to supply a decent amount of consoles. I'm starting to think they won't achieve their worldwide FY shipments goal.

Very different case, if PS5 doesn't sell more isn't due to lack of demand, it's due to lack of supply due to the chips shortage.

But I was assured last week's numbers were an indication of demand. Go on give me another laugh, I guess this week's numbers represent demand too?

As usual pathetic stock issued to Japan but at least up on last week.
Where is the demand for a single PlayStation game to chart in the top 30 the TWO weeks before Christmas?

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
It's all entertainment money.

Home, portable or hybrid. They're competing directly.

The only thing that makes sense to count separately, would be mobile. Because unless you're talking about game software specifically, the smartphone is a necessity. It is a tool, that is used by people to function better. Videogame consoles are very limited in that. The nature is still overwhelmingly entertainment.

I'm sure Japanese third parties don't think PS5 and Switch shouldn't be compared since one of those actual seems to be selling software in Japan, the other is a niche device at this point without a single game with more than 100K physical sales.
As Retailers start to put together their PS section for 2022, Publishers will need to pay a lot to market exclusive since the entire store is likely looking like a Switch advert due to the loopsided competition between the two systems.

With chip shortages expected to continue into next year, PS's situation isn't going to be a lot better compared to this year which had Tales of Arise, Demon Slayer, Scarlet Nexus, Resident Evil Village, Nier Replicant, Lost Judgement as the high profile Japanese exclusives, Western AAA third parties have already declined to their lowest sales in over a decade.
Nothing from a third party launching next year on the PS will reach even 1/5 of what Monster Hunter Rise achieved this year on the Switch - which is around 500K, this year the highest selling title across the PS4/PS5 is Tales of Arise which will finish at best with 300K physical sales this year.

Elder Ring is the first title that could potentially surpass 100K on the PS5 - so it should give us a good indication of what 2022 holds for the PS ecosystem. Meanwhile Arceus alone is likely to outsell all games launched on the PS ecosystem during the first half of the year.

I'm sure when Capcom sees 600% YoY growth in physical sales in Japan, due to their Switch exclusive titles MH Rise & MH Stories 2 they aren't thinking they need to focus on PS5 exclusive in order to help Sony make PS5 a thing in Japan :D MHW2 is likely not planned to hit the system until 2023 and if it's not money-hatted and a Switch successor launches by than it might not even be exclusive to the PS5 in Japan

Companion to what? Even if you combine the hardware sales of the PS3, PS4, PS5, and every Xbox console in Japan, the Switch still leads in units sold.

You're posting in a thread where the Switch has swept the top 30 software. Your anecdotal experience doesn't line up with the sales figures in the OP.

Sure we will get official numbers from Famitsu for the Top 100 in 40 days or so, so the snapshot I've put together provides us an idea where things are but they are actually lacking data. In reality third parties are doing better for the Switch than what we are seeing here, since it doesn't include sales outside of the Top 30 or digital. eShop only games also are not tracked by anyone and the only updates we get for those is directly by the studios/publishers.

A couple of things:

1. Have houses gotten smaller in Japan over the last couple of decades? The PS1 and PS2 had no issue selling in Japan in their heyday. Yes, the PS5 is larger, but so large that people would forego buying it? Nah.
2. The PS3 outsold the PS4 in Japan. So no, the PS3 was not a disaster in Japan. If the PS3 was a disaster then the PS4 was a disaster. And the PS5 is whatever is worse than a disaster.

I don't think Sony's move into PC gaming has anything to do with the Steam Deck. Like, literally nothing. The Steam Deck is going to be an extremely niche device. It'll do better than the Steam PCs (or whatever they were called), but not by much.

I'm also talking price, and power consumption. $499 in Japan is a lot. Also something that on average consumes over 200w is also a issue when it comes to Japan's grid.

Australia is even worse. The switch is like less than a laptop, takes no space, is portable and is $299.

To my steamdeck mention, they have had close relationships with Valve. And if you noticed on showings of Steam deck, they showed off Horizon zero dawn being playable and optimized for steam deck. Being able to play sony's first party, and games like dark souls/monster hunter via steam with your friends is going to be huge in japan.

Steam has grown over in Japan.

I'm not saying steam deck is going to take over japan or even come close to anything Nintendo has, but it will be an option and attractive at that to a mobile centric region.

I'm not sure if Famitsu is going to track the Steamdeck (hopfully it does), but I can't see it being a success in Japan until Japanese third parties start supporting PC much much or Nintendo start bringing games to PC (the later seems very very unlikely).

Doesn't change the fact that Game Freak is half-assing their games. Can't blame them tho. I'd do the same if i were them.
They are simply making their games appeal to the main target audience, which is younger gamers, the fact there are some gamers that have grown up with the franchise and feel it should have some sort of unreal engine open world look to it is moot, and not liking the current art style is also purely subjective, of course posted as objective facts. ;)

Where is the demand for a single PlayStation game to chart in the top 30 the TWO weeks before Christmas?
To be completely fair, Christmas isn't really a big gifting holiday in Japan (though that's changing). New Year's is much bigger, and the traditional gift is money.

If there's no ps5/4's being sold for so long now how do you expect games to chart ahead of a console that sold over 20M in a few years.

There could have been PS4 games charting if Elden Ring and Horizon 2 kept their initial release dates. As it stands the next big PlayStation games come in February (thought there probably won't be a Switch top 30 next week due to Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires)

PS4 sold a few million.

EDIT-It's okay; I know Nintendo cut and soldered off the tail.
Sony cut off the tail. The ps4 has been brutally supply constrained the last 2 years.

They stopped ps4 production in favour of ps5 production which now goes almost entirely abroad.

Japan is a casualty of war between the PS5 and xbox.

But there are still PS4s in Japan. Sony did not have them removed from the territory. And not even one title can nip #30. Ouch.

What titles would you expect to chart? The only one I can think of is Demon Slayer (or COD if the franchise hadn't declined so much).

I don't know, some FIFA game that's not available on the Switch couldn't push a few thousand during the busiest time of the year? I sincerely doubt this was the graceful end for a Sony system they envisioned, and Nintendo helped facilitate that.

All FIFA games have been available on Switch though (though they are much worse versions)

Also FIFA isn't that big in Japan. I checked the last 6 years and the only time a FIFA game made it to the top 30 in week 50 is 2019, when FIFA 20 on Switch sold 3,424 and placed at number 30. If the PS4 or Switch versions of FIFA sold that this year, then it would not be enough to make the top 30 this week.

When you look at the numbers. All that adds up is the people who bought PS5s got them to play free to play games or games they already owned on PS4.
The free to play games might make Sony happy, loot boxes are big money I guess.. But from the point of view of retailers and developers outside that model the PS5 is a waste of resources.

Even for western developers, nothing has sold well apart from the typical ubisoft launch window stuff.
