On the HW front: decent week for sony especially in comparison to last year: 29k vs 4.9k; now about 30k behind YTD. Sony sold 97k over the next 7 weeks and very back loaded so should beat YTD.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Tactics Ogre seems to have done pretty good all platforms combined for what it actually is (enhanced port of several times re-released SNES game, rather than some crazy amazing remake the Reborn title may have some believe).

Much better performance for Sonic than recent entries, and Tactics Ogre actually had one of the best launches for SE this year.

Also the PS5 version of GoW launching above the PS4 version is good to see. The transition is finally starting to happen in Japan.

What would Square Enix do without the Switch?

The Xbox dried up completely. Hopefully, they got some stock for the holidays.

The Xbox numbers were there because PS5 was/is impossible to find, yet people really wanted a next-gen console.

I'm sure once stock becomes a non-issue, it will look like the Japanese sales splits we're used to.
Yeah, Xbox growth in Japan is coming from PC/cloud, not console.

Why single out the PS5? PS4 has sold almost 8M consoles there and the game sold 11,260 for that platform. That's much worse tbh.
Active userbase of PS4 is much more smaller than that. PS4 is at the end of its life so it's logical for software sales to decline sharply while PS5 is a brand new console from PlayStation.

I don’t know why MS is giving Japan the middle finger. There’s clearly more Xbox demand than this as we have seen from weeks where there’s actual supply. All Xboxes are freely avaliable in Europe so, uh, grab a few from us?

I'm happy for Sonic: destroying Forces sales and getting a bit of respect in his home land, where nobody ever cared? Big win on multiple frontiers (lol).

Which is why the PS5 had more sales.

Ragnarok sales in Japan aren't weird in any way. Western games have always done poorly.

That is not true.
People don't buy xbox, because there is no ps5. It doesn't make sense. Especially for Japanese people, who play Japanese games.

Actually 9.4 million, the PS4 Pro sold an additional 1.6 million but hasn't featured in the famitsu hardware sales for over a year because it was discontinued.

the god of war numbers while not terrible (pretty much on par with 2018 in japan) show why Sony flooded the UK and North America this quarter with ps5’s

I bet by early spring next year sony start shipping 40k+ a week to Japan

What are the other 2 million PS5 owners play if an AAA exclusive PS game is a no go for them?
Simply being a AAA game isn't enough, God of War simply isn't that popular in Japan. The biggest successes for the PS ecosystem in Japan this year are Elden Ring, Horizon and Dragon Quest

Sell less software definitely.
Say it often. Japan has terrible taste in games. Let’s please not move in the mobile/portable first direction they did.
Nothing in this chart shows a "mobile" first or "portable" first direction. Different countries just like different franchises and there are plenty of good franchises Japan likes. It isn't that different from Western countries.

TO is still pretty niche, even though its spiritual offspring FFT is well-known.

Watch the new trash Pokemon game climb on top next week and stay there till next year.
Geez, under 30k in a gaming centred country with a population of over 125 million is really weak.
A western developer could release the unanimous best game of all time and it wouldn't sell over 1 million in Japan.

I know you're probably trolling, but mobile isn't that different from casual cashgrab trash like the yearly Fifa/CoD/Madden/AC that are always topping the charts in most Western countries.

Doesn't matter which country, you'll always find casual, accessible shit on top.

God of War did fine, I don't think it's right to say it's performance is weak.

Selling over 1 million in a single country is not easy but we have seen some Western developers do it (GTA5, Minecraft, and Luigi's Mansion 2 and 3 for example ).

No, the difference is the hardcore audience in japan is primarily on mobile/portable whil,e in the US mobile is considered more casual. So we still get high quality AAA and indie games because we haven't gone the full mobile root like japan. I think the switch being the leading platform lowers the scope of the games and for me personally makes their games less appealing in general. My favorite japanese developers target the western market due to the lack of support home for their kind of games.
