Electronic Arts Announces Record-breaking FIFA 22 Launch and Provides Comments on the Future of Football

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) today addressed the global football community through a blog post from EA SPORTS Group GM Cam Weber:

To Football Fans Around The World,

It’s been an exciting couple of weeks for EA SPORTS, as we officially launched FIFA 22. We’re very proud of this year’s game, and love seeing the excitement from players around the world as you get into the experience.

Since launch, we’ve already had 9.1 million players join the game, 7.6 million Ultimate Team squads created and 460 million matches played. We will continue delivering amazing experiences throughout this season, but first - a heartfelt thank you to our incredible community of football fans.

While we are only at the beginning of our journey with you in this year’s game, we’re also focused on where we go from here.

We’re here to create the best experiences for football fans everywhere. To do that, we start by listening to our players. We hear consistently that what matters most is growing the global community, creating innovative football experiences across new platforms, a commitment to every level of the sport including grassroots, and accelerating the elevation of the women’s game. As a result, we have a clear vision for the future of football.

Through years of building our global franchise, we also know that authenticity is essential to the experience. That’s why we focus so much energy on the collective strength of over 300 individual licensed partners that give us access to 17,000+ athletes across 700+ teams, in 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues around the world. We continually invest in the partnerships and licenses that are most meaningful to players, and because of that, our game is the only place you can authentically play in the iconic UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, CONMEBOL Libertadores, Premier League, Bundesliga, and LaLiga Santander, among many others. The breadth of our partnerships and our ecosystem of licensed content will enable us to continue to bring unrivaled authenticity in our EA SPORTS football games, now and for many years to come.

As we look ahead, we’re also exploring the idea of renaming our global EA SPORTS football games. This means we’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world.

The future of football is very big and very bright. Our priority is to ensure we have every opportunity to continue delivering the world’s greatest interactive football experiences. Thank you again for your support and feedback on this year’s game. We look forward to creating the future of football with you.

See you on the pitch.

Cam Weber, EA SPORTS Group GM

If they change the game from anything from Fifa they will lose sales.
Man I hope FIFA allows others to use the license, it would almost kill EA lol
2 things could kill Fifa

- killing EA Official Fifa license exclusivity
- Konami catering to the casual gamer as well as the hard-core and hiring top notch developers for the user interface. Presentation is everything.

Fifas strength is in the pick up and play ease of use category for casual gamers.
With PES No one wants to pick up a controller to play a game where it takes 100 passes to get to the opposition goal.

Wait what? Aren't they making billions of dollars on a yearly basis, in this? Why would they give it away for free, even in a hypothetical situation where they're going F2P?
They make far, far, FAAAAR more from selling FUT packs compared to unit sales. And the person you replied to suggested that it would only be the lootbox-infested shitshow that is FUT which would be free, not the other game modes/leagues.

Wondering if Microsoft or Sony is gonna snatch up the FIFA Brand License. Sure would help having a official FIFA game exklusive to your console.

Konami pretty much killed the only competition EA had. No wonder FIFA22 is already a success. EA can pretty much do whatever they want now.

There used to be a much smaller but very much beloved gold series called Tiger Woods . . . . EA decided that Tiger's name should be removed from the series. It did not work out very well as I recall.

Hmmmm. What are the chances FIFA is driving this by saying it doesn't want to be associated with card packs? Better or worse than just asking for more money?

FIFA could be rebranded as ‘EA Sports FC’, trademark applications suggest

EA recently confirmed it’s exploring changing the franchise’s name

Electronic Arts has filed multiple trademark applications for ‘EA Sports FC’, which could potentially be the new name for its FIFA football franchise should it rebrand the series as it’s currently considering.

On October 7, EA Sports group GM Cam Weber confirmed the company was “exploring the idea” of renaming the blockbuster franchise and was reviewing its naming rights agreement with world football’s governing body FIFA.

It has since emerged that the company filed video game software trademark applications for ‘EA Sports FC’ with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office on October 1 and October 4 respectively.

Were EA to cut ties with FIFA, Weber pointed out that it would still hold many separate league, player and stadium licensing agreements with other partners.

“Through years of building our global franchise, we also know that authenticity is essential to the experience,” he said.

“That’s why we focus so much energy on the collective strength of over 300 individual licensed partners that give us access to 17,000+ athletes across 700+ teams, in 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues around the world.

“We continually invest in the partnerships and licenses that are most meaningful to players, and because of that, our game is the only place you can authentically play in the iconic UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, CONMEBOL Libertadores, Premier League, Bundesliga, and LaLiga Santander, among many others.

“The breadth of our partnerships and our ecosystem of licensed content will enable us to continue to bring unrivalled authenticity in our EA Sports football games, now and for many years to come.”
