E3 2021: Xbox has everything to prove, it's time to show off the fruits of its software investments and there's little margin for error

Don't expect much from internal studios. From what We have heard maybe we get a new trailer with some snipets of gameplay. But to have a full on demo of Avowed, Perfect Dark, State of decay 3, Everwild, Fable isn't happening from what we are hearing.

Maybe we see some updated trailers that are not full on CGI trailers, but I highly doubt we see anything from those projects with any significance. I'm expecting halo multiplayer, a bunch of third party, exclusive gamepass stuff, and a lot of reveals from Bethesda.

If we see any of those games in a meaningful way I'll be shocked. I do expect to see some surprises though that people wont be expecting.
At the very least we're getting Halo Infinite gameplay and Forza Horizon 5 gameplay from their internal teams, Starfield and Project Omen gameplay from Bethesda, and Project Typhoon gameplay from Xbox Publishing. Seems like a pretty good mix to me, and definitely fixes what was wrong with their last show. And obviously we'll be getting more gameplay and release dates from games like Flight Sim and Psychonauts 2. Then you'll also have third party games and big Game Pass announcements. It honestly sounds like it's going to be a very balanced show packed with all kinds of content.

Me too! But as far as I know Moon has been making a multiplat action adventure for awhile now, I don’t think their cords to Microsoft has been cut for good but this generation I think we’ll have to cope without a new Ori game. Theoretically I guess MS could let another dev step in and make another Ori but I don’t see who could pull it off. Maybe Team Cherry? (Hollow Knight)
They're still working on Silksong. Plus, aren't Team Cherry only a couple people?

Wolfenstein 3 needs to be at a stage close enough for a demo if they wanted to show it, no?

I wanna see that XSX hardware advantage, it's got however many additional compute units over the PS5 well lemmie see it onscreen FFS and not in a goddamn CGi trailer or cutscene, hand some cunt a controller on stage and let him play some fecking games that melt eyeballs.

Yeah I’m just throwing stuff at the wall, I honestly don’t think anyone could do another Ori besides Moon, it’s why I would’ve opened the wallet wide early on to acquire them, it’s no use owning an IP if you have no control of it’s future, and imo the two Ori games are among the best games they have. Hopefully Moon won’t skip Xbox for their upcoming game at least, it’s a talented bunch.

Wouldn’t put Ori in the hands of anyone else. I know MS own the IP but Moon felt the story was tied up nicely after Will of the Wisp. I’d say let Moon do their multiplat, and then see where the chips have fallen after that.

We don't even know if Wolfenstein 3 is being worked on. Machine Games have to have been working on something since their last release, but chatter about what they're working on has been incredibly quiet.

Personally I prefer Microsoft's line up. I've put more hours in to sea of thieves than any other game. I just want them to see the same level of mainstream recognition that the Sony exclusives get. A modern perfect dark for example, should absolutely be getting mentioned in the same sentence as god of war and the last of us.
I like both. since both fills what i need. Xbox alone wont satisfy me with their games, so i have to balance with PlayStation. Though Nintendo has better games than both of them. Mario kart in insane fun, compared to gt, and forza horizon. Animal crossing has that relaxing atmosphere. at the end of the day, its you who is playing the game. Enjoy what you can, and dont let others let you down about it.

How is Rare dead when SoT is one of their most successful titles to date?

Might be reading this incorrectly be it was definitely worked on in some form in 2018.

Maybe narratively but feels like they would have a steer on that already.

Rare is probably bigger and more successful now than they ever have been lol.
Where is this idea coming from?

DKC sold like ten million copies decades ago, in a much smaller industry.

SoT sold like 2-3 million with the rest of the players joining for "free" on GamePass it looks like. Giving away stuff for free does not equate to being big and successful.

The idea that current Rare is bigger and better than with the Stamper brothers at the height of their creativity seems a bit silly.

Numbers and facts are important when discussing things. If SoT has actually sold tens of millions of copies like the SNES DKC series, I'll be happy to hear it.

Er SOT sold more than that on Steam alone.
And i'm pretty sure someone from Rare themselves tweeted that SOT became their most successful game ever, a while ago.

They have 23+ studios, if 15 of them have at least 2 games in development which is completely feasible that's 30 games right there. So 23 studios and I'm sure they have a few smaller ones as well, 40+ titles is a reasonable assumption. Sony have 25 in development from 12 so you do the math 👍

Again, more of this nonsense.

I mean...they could try. We do it here everyday with those kind of wild speculations. Chances of a lot of them happening are almost zero but it's worth the try.

Well, I guess this is where our perspectives diverge, in that I see no added value to the article in the author throwing in a bunch of wild speculation on what MS could possibly do to result in an exciting E3 conference. It would inadvertently and artificially limit the focus of his article to the examples the author suggests (even if not intended), when there are in fact an infinite number of possibilities, by making it seem as if the article is trying to imply that if MS doesn't tick off all the things suggested, they somehow have failed... it shifts the focus of the article.

It's also an inherently subjective quantity, so you could even ask 40 people on this forum that same question and get 40 different responses.

For example, a hardcore Halo fan could simply be satisfied by an awesome Halo: Infinite re-reveal and on the basis of that alone feel like MS delivered. Another gamer might want more studio acquisitions. Yet another might want to see MS making a new AAA Battletoads game.

The point is, it's not on the article author to prescriptively tell us (their readers) what they think MS could do to delight us gamers. He or she cannot know that. And so I don't see the lack of blind speculation on game announcements being a valid criticism against the article in the OP.

You and I already know the types of gaming experiences we like and would be delighted in seeing at MS's conference. The article author mentioning a few examples based on their own subjective gaming tastes wouldn't add much value to us whose gaming tastes might differ entirely.

"Err", I see stories saying 1 million sold on Steam

Again, sales matters.

They have stated they have had around 15 million people play the game (via free with game pass), with around 3 million total sales it looks like, across Xbox and PC.

And again, DKC series sold 15-20 million. At 60 bucks a pop.

Again, I don't care, but I've seen this my whole life where people just "say stuff" in terms of numbers and sales. Nintendo has been "going out of business" for the last 3 decades in a lot of people's minds.

Anyway this idea that SoT is their most successful game doesn't appear to be even in the realm of reality, and results and facts do matter.

You just fell for the bait, they fully know that Rare isn't at their peak right now.

Sales matter, but not so much when your priority is a subscription service, so player engagement and in game sales become more important.
Warzone has zero "sales" remember.

So yeah it probably is their most successful game by now.

Bar a strong first party? They have more first party than Sony (almost double). The games are in development probably 40+ titles, it's Sony who are on the back foot now, they simply don't have enough studios to compete. They can't even put an E3 conference together.

Nope, revenue matters. Giving away a game to 15 million people doesn't help your business. Their goal is NOT player engagement, it's revenue. They sold around 3 million copies, and the rest are the people that have just checked it out at least once on GP. It's not a running total of players playing the game.

DKC sales appear to be around 23 million total, with 13 million sold on the first game alone.

The whole "people who have touched the game" metric is a silly measurement.

It's units sold. Unit sold.

Units.

Sold.

Anyway ... moving on from this!

Even doing the old 'Number of reviews times 50' Steam trick has it around 2.7mil sales on Steam.
And as there are 'only' 23mil Gamepass subs over PC and Xbox, unless 60-70% of all Gamepass subs have played SOT (which is impossible), then yes its sales have been good.

And its alright saying the DKC series has sold 'x' amount, the individual games have all sold much less than 10mil, with the first DKC selling the highest at 9.3mil on Snes.

Its not like they bought studios that just came out of the garage. Every studio they bought are full of industry veterans with successful titles under their belt. I mean seriously, what will be shown will be good, but to think there is some sort of failure option Vegas isnt even taking those bet because its impossible. The only bets are on those studios they have had in place for years, namely The coalition and 343, both mediocre in all honesty.

Just remember, the biggest fruit that everyone asked for and that they said, was that they will let devs (mostly) do what they want and provide them with help. So judge e3 based on that defining factor, because most things will fall under that.

Sony have had a brilliant start to the generation, but it's folly to disregard the powerhouse Microsoft first party are now. I get quality over quantity absolutely but until we start seeing these games we have to believe they are at least good games. The point is though 23 studios all making games will generate far more games than 12, do you agree?

controversial statement time....Xbox has nothing to prove.
They've already proven they have the best machine for multiplats, and that they have the best ecosystem.

we already know they struggle with exclusives. We already know Halo and Gears are not up to the standard set by the original devs that created them and sold them off.

the only thing someone has to prove is Bethesda. imo they haven't made anything that good in a decade.

One of the most disappointing acquisitions.
They went from being a AAA dev for Nintendo to a C- for MS.
Hate to agree with you, but they are not the powerhouse they were on N64. Why that is, we probably will never know. Although it doesnt help that they said they wont be working on any of their back catalogue going forward (they said that years ago).
But SOT was a huge success for them, and Everwild looks cool. Who knows what they bring us in the future.

Aside from new games and game pass additions, I really hope they announce they'll be adding more games to bc. I have a ton of games still not playable.

Also, more importantly, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey getting the 4k goodness.

No it isn't.
On paper much potential is there but it has to be proven with these companies Xbox games.

The other issue is how long will we have to wait to not only see the fruit of these acquisitions but also play/experience them.

I own my XSX(working on getting another) and XSS(for young nephew when he visits)for the HOPE'S of all of this coming together right.

Dr Bass Dr Bass please tell us how huge flop Fortnite and Warzone are with their zero units sold... You speak of disconnection from the reality while you are the one who ignores the fact that decades have passed and times have changed. Sales mean nothing nowadays when 70-100% of the revenue sits in DLC/MTX whether someone likes it or not.

Just want to see a solid roadmap for the rest of this year and 2022. No more announcements of games that are still in pre-production. Should have enough content by now to avoid that

After their dogshit first year Halo and Starfield isn't enough. I want to see Avowed, Arkane's next game (has to be nearly done by now) and some new AA games in the mix. That would be a good lineup between now and the end of next year

Again, you are talking about a future that hasnt happened yet.

23 is more than 12,

'thats math.'

I remember this same phrase being uttered recently and it didnt turn out too well...

So, again, lets wait until the games actually come out. And not fall into the same trap...

We are having a debate about bigger numbers....and Insomniac....1 studio.... just put out in..... 6 months:

Spider-Man Remastered
Miles Morales
Rift Apart
