E3 2021: Xbox has everything to prove, it's time to show off the fruits of its software investments and there's little margin for error

XB has built the best ecosystem of any console, so now they need the next-gen games to fill in the gaps.
Regardless, I feel whatever is shown will be picked apart endlessly and not good enough.
Sony does much of the same shit announcing games early, but they seem to get a pass (Shenmue III, FFVII Remake, Last Guardian).

I'm excited for all three consoles, but XB does really need to put out. Forza Horizon 5 and I'm a happy man!!

What they showed ...last year.....5 games are out, 1 is coming in four days and one is on track for later this year.

Pls.

And I dont even know if they showed The Show 2021 last year...so I didnt count that.

My issue is a lot of Bethesda will be most of the show. And Microsoft will get credit if those games are bangers.

They had nothing to do with development of these titles.

Well I guess that's money well spent if that's how it plays out this Sunday.
Bethesda will probably be like... maybe 20-30 minutes if I had to guess.

I doubt they show Deathloop or Ghostwire Tokyo at their demo. That leaves what? Starfield? Wolfenstein 3 if that's even being made? Arkane Austin's project.. ESO trailer for something that will be out by then? I don't think they have a lot of "new" to share. I think a majority will be Xbox stuff + third party + game pass

The Coalition are more talented than Bethesda IMO. I’d like to see what they could do unchained from Gears.

i swear every year its the same song and dance of how its "make or break" for xbox lol
Pretty much and it never matters. If it’s a average/good E3 Xbox diehards are gonna say it’s the greatest thing ever. If it’s bad, don’t worry Phil Spencer is cooking something up next year. Gamepass, BC and hyping up mediocre games. And absolutely no demand from Xbox influencers for Microsoft to do better. Salty PS fans are going to say it sucks either way.

I agree with the article insofar as MS does have more to prove on the platform/ecosystem-exclusives (particularly 1P) front than Sony or Microsoft, even if they've had glimpses of that going very well with FS 2020, Gears 5/Hivebusters, and the Forza games in particular, because they do need some other type of games that'll catch the attention of more folks outside of the Xbox ecosystem.

But, the article doesn't really get into specifics of what they feel Microsoft needs to show at this E3 to make that happen. In other words they're too vague. What games do they need to show gameplay for? What games do they need to reveal? What exclusives do they need to release and when for the show to be considered successful? They don't mention any of that, it just lets them write a follow-up to go with the popular opinion afterwards instead of owing up to their earlier expectations.

That's what I don't like about these vague write-ups, they don't ever get specific about what particular games they want, what state they think they should show up in and what release windows they should drop in. It's usually just generic expectations.

I dunno what people really expect… they have a ton of studios but several of their purchases don’t exactly knock it out of the park every release. A lot of them are smaller studios used to AA games taking their first pass at AAA games too or newly formed studios with decent creative talent but unknown technical talent… expect even longer dev cycles from growing pains.

What are the chances that Deathloop and Tokyo Ghost Wire come to PC Gamepass day one? Would the timed console exclusivity stop that?

I thought about that too. It's possible.
Depends if the RE contract (which I forget if real) was one of a kind or something that they had done with Bethesda.

I also think that Microsoft might be able to do some stupid workarounds if they wanted to like a coupon to all users with gamepass for pc for the game via the store however it would open it to slight abuse.

Their contract with Sony might prevent them from releasing on Microsoft Store, and therefore Game Pass.

Or maybe not, what do I know.

I disagree with the article. The last fews years have shown that it really doesn't matter at all, and that they can keep having poor showings because the press and Xbox community will still carry their water for them.

i am so tired of CGI trailers, MS have shown NOTHING this whole year so if we have another CG fest then we still way off having good output of 1st party titles

least i expect is gameplay from Hellblade

Well it's a timed CONSOLE exclusive for PS5, so I think a Day One release on PC Game Pass is definitely possible, unless the agreement between the two companies also include not putting the game on both XGP and PCGP until the timed console exclusivity period's over.

There's always a next year. As it always was.
This! They, Xbox team always does conferences only for their fans, it’s been like that for years. So of course their fans will enjoy their conference. There’s no harm in that unless you want your brand to grow.

are they all of sudden build a conferences showing gamers who aren’t invested in Xbox, how they need to get a Xbox? That takes more than 1 conference.

for me, people are putting too much “faith in this conference” and after the conference, things will continue the same!
fans from Xbox will enjoy it.
Other gamers will not see any reason to invest on the platform.

Neither the Press or Xbox Community are carrying Xbox. Microsoft as a whole is doing the carrying. And Microsoft as a whole does not have unlimited patience.

They literally have everything in their favor right now bar a strong first party lineup. The integration of cloud gaming, backwards compatibility, smart delivery and, as another poster mentioned, even the handling of saved data have been game changing this gen. Now they just need a solid lineup of great looking and playing exclusives so that I can play a new Perfect Dark on the main TV, on my bedroom TV and most importantly on the toilet, seamlessly. The foundation they've constructed is far superior to Sony's but they really do have to make good on their promises now otherwise I think all the good will they've generated will vanish and I don't think people will be willing to give them another chance this time round.
Bar a strong first party? They have more first party than Sony (almost double). The games are in development probably 40+ titles, it's Sony who are on the back foot now, they simply don't have enough studios to compete. They can't even put an E3 conference together.

Don’t think that’s true at all. Never has a console launched with such a lack of first party/exclusives, such a poor first 12 months, a focus on old games, coming off a terrible ending to the previous generation... and still had the press and the community trying to convince the world it was the hypest product on the market. Let’s not forget that Xbox’s mediocre offering has been going on for a decade, yet you wouldn’t know that by the way the press and the community talks about it.

And Microsoft’s patience? The division is making money, and the future certainly looks more exciting than the past so, I don’t see how they would lose patience now that they have finally figured out a way to make it a subscription based model, which is just gold for MS. Expectations go down, quantity kinda matters more than quality... it’s heaven.

Not all of us fans have enjoyed the conferences. IMO the last few have been bland, underwhelming and shit. Three friggin Gears games in one conference? F’off.

You know they have been shit when the usual zealot or phoney starts a reaction tweet with “anyone who thought that was meh is getting unfollowed, you’re not a fan “ and rubbish like that.

I’m glad Halo Infinite got delayed because if some had their way with the routine damage control , the game would of released in that state last year.

It actually sounds like it's going to be a pretty good mix of Bethesda, Xbox, and Xbox Publishing. All three should be announcing new games and showing gameplay.

Both Xbox and PlayStation are doing fine. Don't need to prove shit when both sell well. Microsoft is banking on Game Pass and PS5 sells out immediately when available. I don't see any problem here.

The Fermi paradox kinda works for Xbox.

There are billions and billions of studios Microsoft has bought to make games, but WHERE ARE THEY?

contract is only for consoles. Sony has 0 business on the pc side, and bethesda can do whatever it want to. So expect day 1 on pc.

In the clouds...
MS is finding themselves back to the same situation they found themselves last year. One of my beliefs for why the Infinite demo fell flat is that, among other things, people were already coming off The Last of us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima and seeing what studios can do late gen. We don’t exist in a vacuum and the unspoken word was that the demo wasn’t as inspired as it could be as it didn’t even hold a candle to PS4 games. Again, there were other problems with the demo but i believe this just didn’t help their cause.

Fast forward to today and we’re back at it again with Ratchet and Clank clearly another grand slam by a sony studio. So yah. MS is going to have to come out with a banger with their titles at E3. And actually show something that wows everyone. This is a tough act to follow.

They can’t fall flat again they ran out of mulligans.

They are not facts, it's complete bullshit.
in term of output xbox has alot of games coming in. not to mention, Some of those games are regarded are great by the 3 players (pc, PlayStation and xbox). As of now, Sony has the lead. but it wont be that way in 2022+. Not to mention, they are still going for spree, and are planning to buy bethesda purchase again.

Either way, everyone will be happy. Playstation will be for their exclusive (that wont go away). Pc/Playstation can enjoy xbox games on pc. Xbox players can enjoy their new games. Everyone is happy.

You are comparing 1 team doing work for 1 console, compared to other team who are doing work on 4 systems (x1, xsx, xss, pc). One team has advantage to utilize that console only. They dont need to worry about other thing. The other team has too much plate in their hand, and cant do their best on those 3 system at highest graphic.

Lol in development and many have released games or releasing games that they had under under contract before the purchase like the outer worlds, Wasteland 3, ghostwire Tokyo, death loop, psychonauts 2 ect. Just because you purchase a studio doesn't mean you get a exclusive AAA game the next day ffs.

And what will happen if they dont?, will XSX sales suddenly dry up?, of course not.
Nothing will change whether its a good or bad conference.
Its only the hardcore that even watch stuff like E3, and if people are buying XSX consoles with almost zero 'next gen' games, then they will still buy them after this conference.

They already know that, thats why they are saying it, because they can at the moment.
They need to find a new meme soon enough though as the second half of this gen should be flooded with first party games.
