Homie ...

Magic in DD is so far above other RPGs of any kind it's not even funny. Other games only look good when you summoning gods at level 600 or some shit. DDs fireballs are fun when you're a starting mage... then the electricity starts and you notice that lightning bolts feel like proper fucking lightning ... then you get some ice spells and think damn that's intense... and then Maelstrom and Bromide and all the heavy hitters come out and your summoning rocks from heaven and pointing fucking tornados at people.. it's wild and amazing and exactly how magic should feel in a game. Powerful. Dangerous. high risk reward but god-damn .. so pretty.

The combat is easier to compare to something like DmC or something than any other action rpg. The skill involved in chaining different attacks and tuning your character to be whatever kind of dangerous you want them to be is more intimate and intertwined than in any other game you'll play. There will be a point where you are running scared through the dark from goblins and it will feel amazing. And then 70 hours later you are hunting chimeras in the dark and they should be scared. It's one of the best power trips in gaming.

The atmosphere, scale, build up of power and consequence in the world for this game is pretty stunning. Creature design is perfectly Dungeons and Dragons. Classes are clearly defined but have room to breathe if you want to experiment. Weapons and armor all look different and show up on your person when you equip them. The agency you have in the world is amazing - whole plot lines can be skipped or delved into. Characters can and will die and disappear forever if you aren't careful. Evil af bad guys can be silly and stupid while also being actually creepy. Dragons can be sympathetic and dangerous at the same time. There is a lived in feel to this world.

At some point in the future you will have a story of being in the middle of nowhere, not sure about which direction you should be traveling, in the dark with nary a brew sauce or grass on hand to give you life. You'll think that there's a light maybe past these trees that could maybe be that one cave you saw before the sun went down and at least that would put you in the right direction towards town. It'll be not completely quiet and you pawns will be droning on about wolves or some shit and you may just get comfortable before you hear a whooshing sound, see red eyes and then HO FUCK you're fighting a dragon! And you will fight the fuck out this thing for a whole day in game. The sun will come up and set again cause this thing is so fucking strong and it has how many life bars(??!!) and two of your pawns are dead thank god your healer is still here and finally... after all that... when you climb his head and stab him one last time and come out the other side a dragon slayer when you were just trying to escort some girl to some fort???
This shit is magical and you will get lost in it and it will be on of the greatest experiences a game will ever give you.

And then you go to Bitterblack Isle 0.0

That is what I'm really looking forward to. I love magic spells and what not.

I watched a few seconds of a clip on YouTube of DD spells and I already like the
electric whip
and
ice spike coming up from the ground

bro... you don't even know the half of it! The Sorcerer is on a whole nother level. You will find yourself ACTIVELY seeking out the free-roaming Chimera, Griffin, and Drakes just to test ur mettle!

I'M HAVING ALL THE FEELS JUST REMEMBERING.

It's head and shoulders above other games when it comes to combat.

Playing Witcher 3 right now and its combat is a complete joke compared to DD. DD's animation quality is also on another level.

Completely agree. The combat was and still is super refreshing when you're coming from games like the witcher 3. It's super fun. You can climb pretty much every bigger enemy resulting in cool fights. Don't wanna spoil too much, but there's an enemy that can fly and... well when you grab it you fly with that monster.

Okay 👌🏻 god damn GAF, you mofos win. I'm in!

Another question though...can I pop off insane spells as a mage and also use sword and shield, or is it class based and locks you in to one or the other?

Not buying shit if it's not 60fps. 2 months away and they still won't tell us? We have games like Horizon being open world in perfect 4k, but a last gen game by capcom can't work at 60fps?

You choose one vocation/class at a time, but you can change them easily, and without consequence unless you are obsessed with min/maxing. There are also some vocations that are hybrids, like Magic Archer or Mystic Knight. They can't pop off spells as big as a sorcerer's, but they get their own unique blend of magic and steel.

Awesome, thank you. I always have to play as the most powerful mage I can, at least at first so Sorcerer it is. I can see myself wanting to play all the outer circle classes however, especially Mystic Knight and some form of archer.

Not trying to compare this to Skyrim (since I know very little about it) but one thing I liked in Skyrim was the ability to invest skill points in certain vocations without diminishing previous investments. It was neat being able to switch from archer to spell casting to sword and shield without penalty to your skills. Not every game can be like that but multiple playthroughs to try several classes isn't always an option.

I really wish they would take this opportunity to buff Warrior so its not as handicapped as the other vocations.

Its not like giving the class the same amount of active skills as everything else would break the games balance, that's what the Assassin class was for.

Sadly, this most probably being (locked?) to 30fps means a hard pass from me.

Such a shame. I was hoping to get to experience DD all over again. This time at 60fps :(

Dragon's Dogma is the second-best RPG I've played in the last decade (Nier: Automata is #1). Fantastic game, but I've already triple dipped with 360 base, 360 DA, and Steam DA.

You can (and and almost certainly will) max out multiple classes by the time you beat the base game, let alone Dark Arisen's expansion content.

Awesome, another nitpick of mine mitigated.

Everyone is making the game sound so good, definitely going to give it a go. The best part, such a short wait!

No 60fps, no tripple-dipping.

Also, I couldn't get behind the modding capabilities on PC. I'll just restart another playthrough on the October 3rd.

I actually tried this recently because it was on Sale on GOG. One of the few games i've hard quit ever.

It's so difficult to not compare the combat to Souls and it's really, really bad to me.

I'm kinda sad I can't get my girls back /: I'll miss you Arya.

Starting to get really hyped. I haven't played this in over 5 years. The wind is pushing meeeeeee. Between this and Undertale, everything else can get fucked.

Couldn't care less about whether or not it's 60FPS so I'm excited either way!

By the way, were there romance options in this game? I feel like there was for some reason and yet I'm not sure.

What didn't you like?

Combat was really rigid and it seemed to hit that too easy or complete non-sense difficulty balance. I really didn't like the animation locks on most attack maneuvers. Just felt flat and wooden.

I did like exploration though. That seemed fun. In addition, the music was pretty solid.

Played this on ps3 and the thing that bugged me was the creature respawning while traveling from town to town. Coming across the same pack of wolves or harpies or whatever really got on my nerves after awhile.

That said, I did enjoy the world and will probably grab this when it comes out.

but I ended up with
that lame nun lady.

I even followed a FAQ!

You can romance practically every and ANY NPC in the game. Yes, even a random guard standing over there, a random villager, shopkeeper, inkeeper, whatever, and even (creepily enough) children. Of course, there are several more significant NPCs that you can also pursue.

No need to follow a FAQ if you know one basic hard rule:

The person you're doing romance sidequest with before the final fight with the Dragon will be locked as your romance. (if they have no sidequest, then the person you raise their affinity with the last.)

As simple as that.

10/10 post. One of the best post I've ever read. You sir just sold a game!!!!!!

No options
You only get to romance the innkeeper
Dang so there isn't one.

Wow that sounds really extensive! I never finished the game since I was only able to rent it but that's a lot of variety! I hope that it's well worth it though and you or your romanced partner don't die at the end.

Once you start certain quest lines, be wary as you may end up maxing out the affinity for characters that end up as your 'beloved'. That's unfortunately how my Arisen ended up with Aelinore :I, and that was after like 2 quests. God I disliked her.
I wanted Julien, goddamn it.
Oh and relevant comic:

I know it's not picking up and throwing, but if you haven't played Dying Light, you should check that out. You can drop kick zombies off of tall buildings.

I think I remember knocking lots of people off of buildings in Infamous:SS too.

Haha yep that was great fun too.

Have they given information on what kind of graphical improvements we can expect?
