Dopamine detox - 7 days starting tonight!

IDKFA

I am Become Bilbo Baggins
For the past month or so I've found myself far less focused than before. I'm spending too much time on Twitter (which is odd because I hate Twitter), YouTube, general internet, video games, Neogaf and RedTube (I probably fap at least twice a day, even while getting regular sex)

I've also gotten really lazy. I haven't been to the gym for a month. My work rate has also dipped. I'm no longer hyper focused and just go through the motions.

Now I'm not going slate porn, video games and social media (this is Neogaf after all), but this lack of focus and drive all started when I really got back into video games and started playing them daily, which somehow resulted in my brain wanting to OD on dopamine and get back into heavy amounts of porn, social media and junk food. I even stopped reading a book a week, which I haven't done for over a year.

So, from tonight at 23:59 BST, I'm going on a dopamine detox for two weeks. I've heard mixed results from others who've tried it, but I want to give it a go and see if there really are benefits.

The rules.

For 7 days I will not.

Play video games
Watch any TV or YouTube
Fap or watch porn
Listen to music
Eat junk food
Use social media (all apps deleted)
Browse the internet unless work or study related (that includes GAF)
Have sex (my wife is trying this challenge with me, which means after its over I'll have the longest bust ever)

Instead, I'll work, study, go to the gym, and read books for down time.

Anybody else ever try this? If so, how did it go. I'll check back in 7 days to report how it went, or sooner if I failed.

See you all in a week.

study what? also which kind of books?

History masters degree.

I have a huge tome of a book which is a biography of George III by Andrew Roberts. Should be able to do that in a week. If not, I have other history books to read, including a history of the SS that I've been meaning to read for some time.

Recently I spent 8 days in a remote cabin with nothing but raccoons & squirrels as company.

I did some fishing, read books and neglected my hygiene. It was great.

Of course I tried Twitter and Instagram etc back then but quit because it's not worth my time. I gain nothing from contributing or what it offers.

Online I check out Youtube once in a while and GAF is my only place for the rest.

It's all I need.

Living online with all that social media shit gives you tunnel vision where you forget about what real life is all about.

Just find the balance that suits you best.

Good move OP, see ya soon 😀

I remember reading Ian Kershaw, fun times.

Fake edit: I meant reading the books, not what happened in 1939.

Im on dopamine detox too.
Currently on my 3rd nofap day.

But I do another thing, recommended by Dr. K, that doesnt involve quitting social media:

Stare at a wall during 1 hour to learn to tolerate boredom, and I must say, it does wonders

What is real life about then? apart from living in a cabin.

I don't know about boredom, but I do know that certain cultures focus on close objects like a wall because it activates the "hunting instinct" from when we lived in nature. It apparently stimulates the brain in similar ways to how we did back in the days when we focused on prey, and it's useful to do this before you do other activities when you need to focus hard.

Are you being serious? I can't imagine doing this successfully

Keeping busy enough to drown out the increasingly present existential dread over time....or smoking weed constantly to achieve much the same effect.

Yeah at least the end result seems to be the same. I had my most productive day in ages the first day I did it.

I couldnt imagine it either. But I tried. But i kinda of """cheated"""" because I am on ADHD meds. Still, the struggle to get out of the fkn internet was real even with meds.
Its a really useful trick. The old way was to watch an analog clock for an hour. I do it a few times a year to recenter.
Exactly : )
does staring the back of my eye lids for 1 hour work ?
Thats called meditation. Unless you fall sleep, it's suposed to work haha

The gym releases dopamine. Might as well jack that in too. Of course, this is all a bit of a silly exercise. Just moderate your wanking and digital life the same way you should be moderating everything else and you'll be rosy.

It's not because you are playing too many games. You are playing too many games because you are feeling down.

Just go out for a walk everyday in a park or around your neighborhood and detox that way. Being stuck at home is making you feel that way.

Just go out with your wife and have fun outdoors. Then come home and bone. Depriving yourself of everything simply isnt sustainable and wont fix any issues in the long run. You will be back jerking off to weird porn in a few days.

I had similar issues during the early days of pandemic. Lots of sex, but also lots of jerking off and playing games. I treated it like a vacation but i forgot how much I enjoyed simply going out to lunch with coworkers or even by myself. Or the ride home from work i hated everyday. Your brain is wired to be outside. Give it some sunshine and do stuff outdoors then play games and bone your wife all night. You wont feel lazy or lethargic.
