Do you see this console generation holding out for 1-2 years more because it'll be a while before the people who want to buy them will buy them?

I mean, seriously, right now there are hundreds of thousands maybe million of gamers who want to buy a PS5/XSX but can't because supply has been crippled due to microchip manufacturing and covid.

So, won't that make Sony and Microsoft stall the next-gen a couple of years in order for gamers to get hold of those consoles and start this gen before it finishes or something? And that goes to PC gaming too, considering Nvidia and AMD are nowhere near competent enough at the moment to meet the demand for new graphic cards.

Or do you guys think it's business as usual and we'll see a PS6 reveal in 6 years from now?

it could make the generation longer yeah. usually i jump in day 1 but i'll be waiting for slim/pro revisions in a couple years. it really helps there's no games on PS5 i want to play. if i didn't have a PC i'd have got an Xbox. my PC will last until the slim/pro consoles.

Honestly, I think this is why Gran Turismo and God of War are now cross gen games. If they were PS5 exclusive, they might not sell in numbers that would please Sony. There's tens of millions of PS4 gamers out there. Not that many PS5 gamers yet.

It'll be interesting to see just how well Ratchet and Clank sells, as that will act as a yard stick, for sure.

I hope you are right. I can't get either a 3000 series card or ps5 and have been trying for months. (normal methods, don't have time to camp out at a store or run bot scripts or go on twitter 24x7)

It feels by the time me and others like me will get our hands on these it will be half way done the console gen. Its annoying as someone who has always bought day 1 or close to for decades now. This generation sucks, and these companies and retailers better get their stock and stores in line or people will just turn away.
It shouldn't be this hard to buy a product. If they actually cared we wouldn't see scalpers on ebay with pallet full of ps5s or 72 evga 3060ts for 82k being sold in bulk. These scalpers have to be buying directly from the companies or stores are selling to them in bulk first. How else to do you get mass ammounts of products on a skid pallet when a average joe can't get shit at msrp, for just one?

I do think it might last longer, albeit for different reasons.
We're seeing an increase of popularity in games that don't require top-end hardware (AA, indies, f2p, etc), both because of the increasing costs involved with AAA games and because they usually cater to niches that high-budget productions may have difficulties to please.

Besides, we're seeing even middle range cards like gtx 1660 holding "next-gen" titles on high-ultra settings, as long as you forsake stuff like Ray tracing and 4k.

they aren’t even that hard to get now but probably 6 years they announce new ones
You have got to be joking. Why because you have one, they aren't hard to get. Sorry dude, i was there on pre-order morning on time, when they sold out before it began due to assholes sites selling the night before. I was there on launch day and countless drops since then. No luck , stole from cart every single damn time.

You want to help a brother out and get me one at msrp?

2028 will be PS6 time. 8 year life span.

I agree. If only because of Covid and the slow 2 initial years, Sony will extend it until 2028. MS, I am not sure, honestly, because their model seems to be diverging from the previous one...

Yeah you are right with that.
And there are people like me pissed off. My ps4 is dead and have you checked replacement ps4s they are like $399 for the slim, not even pro models.
Just checked amazon now 474.00 for a new ps4 slim. WTF thats almost ps5 cost.

So i can't play my massive collection of ps4 games and don't want to replace it with another ps4 when they are a rip off, and a ps5 plays the ps4 games.

Yup. In my country it's impossible to find one at base value. The majority of retailers who have a few PS5s in stock are selling them for 200-300% the base price.

X-Series X is a lot more easier to find, but it's still out of stock for quite a few major retailers.

no not just because i have one, if you honestly just follow a decent twitter account that alerts you to when stores have them in stock it’s easy (PS5’s are harder admittedly). where are you from and what console do you want?

Yup. Its not just the lack of availability that will extend this console generation but the increase of development cost and time it takes to make a game.
Also chips shrinking in size is becoming harder and more expensive, not too mention Apple and Qualcomm gets first dibs on new Chips.
I think Sony will do a PS5 Pro and Slim on 3nm in 2024. On top of that Cross Gen development will finally be over and we will really START seeing what current gen can do across the board. A PS5 Pro in 2024 would be enough for the current gen to last for a 2028 PS6.
In any case whatever chip size in 2026 TSMC comes out with, will be what the next Xbox and PlayStation will use. Apple and Qualcomm will gobble up virtually all available capacity for a little over a year.
TSMC 2nm comes out in 2024, im assuming they will come out with a new size in 2026. After 1.5 years of Apple and Qualcomm scooping up capacity then enough capacity will be available for PS6.
Thats My Speculation...

I’m in the UK and joined a stock checker discord group 2 weeks ago. Missed a Game drop, Shopto drop, Smyths drop and Very drop but eventually clicked a Game link within 5 seconds of it going live.

In the UK retailers drop at random times in the morning and have started making up new bundles in order to prevent bots and scalpers from gobbling it all up. It’s tricky but not impossible to get one. I got the digital as well which is what I wanted but harder to get. If you follow the discord’s and twitters and act decisively and fast you can get one no problem, if you’re even a minute or two late though you’ll be in a queue of 10k plus.

Nah, when a customer can just walk in a store and buy a PS5, thats when the PS5 will not be hard to find. Im guessing holiday 2022 when that takes place, which will extend this Console generation.

Both new consoles sell better than their predecessors... There is no reason to freak-out, the special thing is how sustained the demand is.

if your uk based this is prob the best one to follow..

i got a disc version at launch and DE back in Jan-Feb using following this accounts stock alerts.
That’s the one I was in and it’s amazing. People have inside info on when each shop is likely to drop and with an estimated time based on historical patterns (e.g Argos 1am, Game usually 9am-10am). Brilliant community and the mods are doing gods work to ensure everyone can get a PS5.

The consoles are currently selling better than they were at this time in the previous gen. How did you come to the conclusion you did?

yeah it really is the best one to use, always updating followers on any updates they get and best times to get on the sites. they were spot on when they had some inside info from a store manager for argos about a restock back in January, as soon as i saw the alert i clicked the link they mentioned and was checked out within 30 seconds from my phone.

No. If anything, the consoles vare selling out faster than ever. But I see the PS5/XSX having their life extender for extra 2-3 years with cross-gen period once PS6/XS2 arrove.

Yeah i have talked about this before. I dont think they will extend the gen by 2 or 3 years, but i think they will extend it probably by a year. So if they planned to launch next gen consoles in 2016, they will wait until 2017, for example.
Not just because of the console shortages, which is a big part of it, but also because of the games that have had to be delayed, sometimes considerably. Everything is like a year behind where they want to be.
I think they will both, especially Microsoft, want to launch next gen consoles with more games than this gens launch too.

What will happen is they in 2 or 3 years will start developing their next generation, it’s always been like that. What I see is once again, Sony going on media outlets saying they are ready to start the next generation and MS rushing it, following by a ton of rumors.

it happened on the PS4/Xbox one and in this generation

you might wonder why?
the Xbox 360 happened, launched 1 year ahead of the PS3.
That is why both companies will try their best to launch their consoles at the same timeframe.

Games just take too long to make on AAA dev cycles. It seems like 5-6 years is the low end for most AAA titles when I could get way more enjoyment out of the rare non-pozzed indie or AA title like those from Falcom. It's now to the point where sequels to beloved franchises are once in a console generation thing where you won't see any follow up to story cliffhangers they leave until half a decade or more after the release of the first title.

I have both XSX and PS5, but I paid big premium for both, so if you really want the new console you just need to drop some extra cash into the bascet.

I think that the diverging strategies of the big three platform holders are probably going to make it hard to pin down the start of new generations moving forward.

Nintendo is already totally out of sync with the generational cycles. The Switch launched in the middle of last gen and looks like it's going to last until at least 2023, probably longer if there's a revision this holiday or early next year. It's even possible that Nintendo is done with true generations entirely and is just going to launch a new Switch model every few years, gradually aging out old ones as they go.

Microsoft is centering their ecosystem around Game Pass, so I could see them opting to just release new Series consoles with improved specs and/or tailored towards different audiences without opting for clear generational breaks. They could just make more demanding games cloud streaming only on older/weaker hardware (like the Series S). They're already doing that with some current gen games (like Flight Simulator) on the Xbox One.

Unless they take a major hit this gen—which seems unlikely now given their strong early sales—I think Sony will stick with the traditional generation model and eventually release a PS5 Pro and later a PS6, but, like OP says, I do think hardware production shortages and lengthened development time due to COVID and the demanding nature of current gen development is going to lead to a longer than usual PS5 lifecycle.

I see generations lasting longer because of diminishing returns. The technology seemed to advance must faster in the early days, so generations were short, yet had huge leaps in what could be done. Look at NES to SNES to PS1 to PS2.

Starting with PS360, the generations lasted longer and most of a consoles library feels like a relatively small upgrade to the games of the previous generation.

It just now takes more time for tech to evolve enough that a completely new generation is justified.

Between Microsoft making XBOX irrelevant with Gamepass and Sony getting cozy with Steam as rumors fly on PS4 ports of PS5 games all I can say is:

ONE GAME.

Both current consoles are matching or exceeding previous generation sales at this point. I believe you are looking at it backwards. It is not the supply constraint that would increase the time of the generation but the higher demand. Higher demand will lead to more consoles sold than previous generation. If that is the case, I can see them extending the generation as to not leave money on the table for all of those consoles sold.
