A quick look at the online portion of Pokemon Sword and Shield reveals a lot of neat ideas. The ability to see fellow trainers in the new Wild Areas hints at what could be a full-fledged online experience, and the true evolution of the series. However, at least at launch, server issues, frame-rate troubles and matchmaking time-outs are sadly getting in the way of connecting with others online - as Tom covers here.

The game is practically unplayable if you connect online in the Wild Area. I couldn't walk more than a few steps without it hitching or freezing.

Not that there's really any good reason to be connected online anyway. The game does nothing interesting with it.
