Well, the video is partially right. The gameplay would have worked without the SSD even on earlier generations. But just not in that quality. It is just a question of the effort (+time) to put into those elements. The SSD just makes it much easier and allow much better quality textures etc.

This is about as stupid as it gets. In a nutshell the video says if you do something different like how it was done lasts gen you could possibly achieve the same effect which misses the entire point on why SSD are important. You don’t have to do things how it was done last gen like having 2 different buffers in memory because the hard drive is too slow to load in the data when needed. All the cutscenes would be pre-rendered video too.

Amazing to hear about all these things the PS3 could do in retrospect when the reality was that it was so starved for RAM we never got custom soundtracks widespread, it was a miracle to even get in game XMB, and there were so many games running under 720p.

But let’s all keep pretending PS3 wasn’t an unfinished console Kutaragi was forced to put out because Howard Stringer slashed his budget by more than 50%……

wow what a waste of time video.......that guy literally just explained the age old background streaming.
Ofc failing to mention the ram footprint this has and what kind of issues you run into the moment your asset sets get really big because of that.
Ratchet could have run somehow on last gen...but not looking like this with zero hiccups.

I agree. Ratchet does not really feel new in the gameplay area in any way

the ssd makes the portaling possible at really high fidelity and really quick. But yeah it could have been done before with less detail

I know right? Somebody with a PS3 dev kit give it to him so he can do it. Lol

I was waiting for him to mention the ram available but that moment never came in, especially because he starts the video with some of the worlds that have really not too many assets in them, but after seeing his "analysis" in the trailer section I can confirm...
