Developer Remedy Entertainment’s 2010 classic gets the remaster treatment, at last bringing Alan Wake to PlayStation consoles - and all next-gen machines. Compared to the Xbox 360 original the remaster’s improved lighting, textures and effects are all crucial to playing on the 4K displays of today. But can PS5 and Series X deliver on a 60FPS target? And are all changes strictly for the better? Tom finds out.

Very little screen time for the actual PS5/XSX comparison. If i followed correctly they are running at the same resolution of 1440P (60FPS) with the main difference being full Vsync which is enabled only on PS5? As a side note, i found the strong/weird emphasis of Tom on "The Most Powerful Console on the market" a bit unnecessary and provocative.

Terrible analysis from Tom, imo

Cuscenes arent just 30 fps, but they stutter. A lot. So the framerate seems even lower.

Didnt mention how different some of the textures are, changing the tone of some scenes.

Didnt mention lighting differences where the original sometimes look better than the newer version.

- Series X and PS5 are 1440p with 4X MSAA. Series S is 1080p. All three seem to have same settings. Textures, shadows and models have been upgraded compared to the original.

- Series X is almost a locked 60 fps a majority of the time, with some exception when it drops into the 50s or even 40s with screen tearing. Same issue can be found on Series S. PS5 has similar drops but no screen tearing.

I was playing last night (on Series X) and thought I saw some slight screen tearing on the top of the screen. Thought maybe I was just seeing things but I guess it was that. It’s only happened once though.

Haven’t noticed any dips from 60. Game looks good overall. Gonna play Control after this and hope the Alan Wake DLC isn’t disappointing.

  • 1080p on Series S. 60 FPS most of the time. Drops to 50s and even mid-40s during fights and light sequences with heavy tearing. No V-sync.

  • All other settings on all consoles are the same.
  • PS5 also uses DualSense for simulating trigger effects, which is nice and packs a punch.
Overall, very nice improvements to the game. If you have both consoles, play it on a PS5 for better frame rates, zero tearing, lower file size, and DualSense implementation.

Prerendered Cutscenes.....at 30fps?
What the fuck is wrong with devs....nobody wants this shit.

They just ported the PC version from 2012 to consoles doing minimal work... Lazy...
They literally said that.
Its a port of the PC version with updated shaders, some models redone and textures.
So kinda like a Remaster........ohh wait what?

This engine seems to hate AMD hardware. For comparison, you only need a GTX 1660 to run this game at 1440p60 on PC.
With 4xMSAA?
I could not find any benchmark using MSAA… I found some with FSAA that is way lighter.

MSAA was/is part of the rendering solution in the engine for transparencies.
Getting rid of it would have needed them to basically rewrite the renderer or rather do a full Remake.

30fps cutscenes are absolutely a joke. If they are gonna be prerendered what the fuck.

As for no Vsync probably relying on VRR to solve the drops....knowing they have drops.
Drops with Vsync are actually more noticeable than drops when Vsync is disabled.

Why there's nothing about the stuttering? Because it can be absolutely terrible at least on PS5 - the target may be 30fps (which would be tolerable at best), but the end result is anything but.

*If you have a capable VRR monitor/TV play it on Xbox Series. It offers the best performance..

I had no idea VRR actually increases a games performance, just that it matches the display refresh rate to the output of the game for a smoother looking on-screen display. Astounding piece of tech that it can actually increase a framerate too. No wonder Riky sings its praises, we should all listen.

Should be compared to PC version and not 360 but anyway - I prefer how original looks. Remaster looks flatter and characters look like if someone shat in their mouths

This month I see a lot of people saying in a few situations that the PS5 was worse despite the higher framerate because it had tearing. Now we have this came in VSync on the PS5 but not on the SeX, so I understand that those same people will say that the PS5 is have the advantage here? (plus 53fps vs 50fps low on that same three enemies with the flare)

I don't like how thin the fog looks in this new version.

People are trying too hard to find differences. And there are examples where PS5 is worse, it drops to mid 50s while walking over the log, while XSX is locked 60 there.

Both versions are the same. If you really have both XSX and PS5, pick the former if you have VRR and the latter if you don't (for triggers).

Not so sure on that. Ps5 seems to be dropping when SX is not. Eg when he is walking towards the and across the tree. So until we have a VG Tech spreadsheet on framerates we don't know.

he did show it. the Xbox version only drops during heavy scenes, in the PS5 scenes you can sew it drop into the mid 50s even while simply walking through the woods

10:48 and 11:59.
It drops in the woods as soon as the framerate footage starts on X when nothing is happening, but when there's shadow people things a few seconds later it doesn't, weird game.

it is weird for sure. this game should run perfectly locked tbh, I wonder how the remaster runs on PC hardware.
since it's the same engine as the original just with some additional flourishes, you'd think anything should he able to run this at 4K 60fps locked.

I am so glad I have a freesync capable TV tbh as I have not noticed any of this really
but it is sad that we need TV tech to fix shortcomings like this

The guy doing the comparison said the PS5 version has a worse framerate, just let it go you can't win the argument. He is not going out of his way to show the lowest points on each version he's just showing each version at different points in the game. The fact you don't believe what he said just shows how deluded you are, it's a console mate not a family member 😉

Heavier drops (lower) on Series consoles, but more drops on PS5.
