Demon’s Souls’ devs considered, and ultimately left out, an easy mode

Sounds fun

You'll get different weapon drops and stuff. *lol*

I get it, it's tedious, but it's one of those games that will break quickly with an easy mode, and people would probably get bored of it sooner without the challenge, and then complain about the game being shallow. It's not like there's a story within the game to keep you hooked. Fact is, the challenge is the game, however the setting and the atmosphere elevates it, probably beyond what it deserves. Sekiro is the same, play the game with cheats on and it's shit, again, the challenge is the game. For me personally, part of the fun is finding builds that just wreck stuff, especially in games like Nioh, which is the far superior game. Yes.

Options are a bad thing.
They can be, that’s part of why warehouse stores are a thing.

Out of curiosity, would it bother you if the game had an option to click the touchpad at any point to skip to the next section?

Don't care about easy mode but having an cheats menu with god mode etc just for fun would be nice. Kinda like trainers or tlou2

That makes sense actually.

No, I just wouldn't use it.
That’s interesting (and consistent). I think for many people that would ruin the game, because they’d always have it in the back of their head that they’re just arbitrarily handicapping themselves by not using it. Must be some personality difference or something.

so did WaPo just write a whole article bitching about an easy mode? because im sure as hell not giving them a click to read this full article. that's in the URL so i'm assuming it's the title of the article. way to clickbait, WaPo.

my only question is, why on earth would you waste your time talking about some shit that never existed?

I've heard you can cheese every boss encounter in some way. Not into that. I did play about half of Sekiro, I had to take a break after every boss to settle down. Not my kind of entertainment.

Easy mode is just cheese you select on a menu.

They're not for you and that's alright. I feel the same towards fighting games: they stylish, sound awesome, but I just suuuuck. Not for me :)

I wouldn't feel like I finished the game.

I'm gonna disagree with you on the easy mode being cheese. If it's built into the game and you don't have to manipulate it (aka stand in a corner and the boss can't hit you) I don't count it as cheese. But you're right though, these games just aren't for me.

"i like options" = "i want to force the devs to crunch so much that on top of remaking this game they now have to develop an entirely separate mode just to appease me and if you don't agree with this entitled as fuck demand then you are a meanie"
This is the stupidiest thing I've read in a while.

An easy mode can be done in just one day adding a few lines of code in the correct places, but nice try.

What do you think easy mode is?

You don't want to cheese the game, but you want a mode where every enemy character dies in 3 hits?

I suck at these games and I'm glad they left it the way it was. I dunno how From manage to do it but even though I die over and over I still have so much fun with their games.

Demon's souls is not meant to be played like any other game. The game forces you to think about your enemy and think about how to survive and conquer. It's a thrill

The original developer's vision for Demon's Souls is that it was very hard. No hand holding. No option to make it easier. You had to learn the game and get better at it. There's nothing wrong with that. Not every game needs to have the ability to breeze through it. There are a ton of games that do that for you. It's nice to have those games that are intended to be hard with no compromises. Clearly Bluepoint wanted to honor that vision for the game that started a whole series of difficult games. Video games are for everyone but that doesn't mean every single video game has to be.

I don't consider an easy mode cheesing.

Cheesing would be like if you're standing in a corner because the boss can't hit you from that angle.

I like options. They didn't provide the option that would make me purchase the game. So I'm moving on.

I just love that everyone on this forums loves having options, except in this case.

I think you’re missing the point that putting in an easymode fundamentally changes the game. And not for the better.
It’s not that difficult. I beat it and my wife says I suck at games.

I did Platinum Bloodborne and that’s about it for gaming achievements.

Ok I suck at twitch games like CoD - well I’m average (1.0k/d), whereas she is really good.
Games like Bloodborne require more expansive tactics and other attributes I guess, lol.

Imagine being so sad you whinge and cry and claim a game you have never played is too difficult. These are the people asking for easy mode.

leads to fear. Fear leads to xbox.
I've always hated these losers game, people who never achieve stuff in their life and cant even complete a challenging video game and accomplish nothing in their lives because its to 'hard'

I guess I won't get into souls games, im going back to viva pinata

Creators should create whatever the *fuck* they are moved to create. Period. period.

Attempting to cater to or be accessible to all is the bane of any notion of genuine art. That's just commercialism. That's just Ubisoft. ;)

Good. Let a game be what the devs want it to be. No need to cater to all audiences.

I also don't demand that the Lego Games should have a permadeath one shot kill hardcore mode.

When the brutally difficult action game “Demon’s Souls” was reborn on the PS5, it rekindled a familiar, divisive debate: Should the game have an easy mode? Bluepoint, which took the reins for the remake from the game’s original creators, Japanese studio FromSoftware, contemplated adding an easy mode and ultimately decided against it, revealed creative director Gavin Moore in an email to The Washington Post.
“This project remakes the work of another development team," wrote Moore. “While we’ve made some changes, our core driving mantra has always been to preserve the spirit and intent of the original creators. While we considered and discussed an easy mode, we ultimately decided it wasn’t our place — merely being custodians for this amazing game — to add something that would fundamentally alter its balance.”

The topic’s endurance and fervor in video game discourse has shown how arriving at an answer is difficult at best, with any outcome likely to provoke criticism. At the root of the debate is a question about reconciling the challenge of a game with its accessibility, something that has prompted opinion pieces in outlets such as Game Informer and Kotaku, particularly about “Souls” games. Some argue that “easy modes” aren’t an adequate enough answer for accessibility to begin with; others have noted that difficulty and accessibility are separate issues.

Moore had made it clear that “Demon’s Souls” would have no easy mode in late October, stating in an interview with Game Informer, “There are no difficulty options, and there shouldn’t be,” adding that he felt the game’s challenge was “fair.” What Bluepoint and Sony did, however, was introduce a number of accessibility features to allow more people to play the game while also utilizing the PlayStation 5′s new user interface to offer help for the game’s grind.

Though the difficulty is unchanged, Bluepoint and Sony didn’t want to leave players without help, especially for those playing the game for the first time. As such, PlayStation Plus members can access 180 tip videos without exiting the game, as part of PlayStation 5’s new UI. You can view them by clicking on an activity card in the control menu of the PS5.
“I think a lot of new users hear ‘Demon’s Souls’ and they go ‘Oh that’s game’s really difficult.’ But it’s not. It’s actually very fair. It’s challenging, but very fair,” said Moore in an earlier conversation with The Post. “But we do understand that people get stuck. ... And we’ve got 180 plus help videos that actually sit inside the game, so if you do get stuck, you can bring up, as you’re still playing, one of those help videos and it will tell you, ‘In this area, you need to do this,’ or ‘This is the best tactic against this boss.’ The way the system works is it will show you a video if you ask for some help, which is just enough to give you a hint. And then if you still haven’t got it, you can look at the next one.”

If they were smart they'd add it as paid DLC.

Here's how to unluck the easy mode in DeS.

Approach the first enemies in 1-1 but do not attack them. Spend 30 seconds letting them swing at you and just avoid their swings.

Very soon you will notice that "wow, they are retarded" and are ridiculously easy to avoid. Almost all the enemies in the game are like this. They're like stumbling drunks. Now figure out when to incorporate attacks.

Congrats, you've gotten over the nocebo effect and learned that this is a normal game.
