Dark Horse Comics establishes gaming division

Dark Horse Games will make its own titles as well as licensing out its biggest franchises for external studios

Dark Horse Comics has launched its own Dark Horse Games division, according to a VentureBeat report.

Founded in 1986, Dark Horse is best known as the publisher of Hellboy, and has also produced series like Umbrella Academy, Usagi Yojimbo, and Sin City.

The company plans to create its own games based on less established franchises and original properties, while partnering with external studios to bring its biggest brands to games.

Dark Horse Games will be led by general manager Johnny Lee, who previously held business development leadership positions at Docomo Digital and Improbable.

"We have evergreen properties, like Hellboy, where there will always be interest in making games and doing collaborations," Lee told VentureBeat.

"We and our partners can really evaluate if a story IP and character universe would be a good fit for games that they're internally designing and developing. I think most AAA devs that I've talked to prefer their game dev team to build core gameplay and then fit an IP to it, versus shoving an IP down their throats. We're sensitive to that."

Lee said the Dark Horse Games team will start small, with fewer than 10 people in its first year.

Last thing gaming needs is more licensed comic book games but maybe they will be an exception and actually make a good one like Spider-Man.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.

These won't be licensed, they will be made by the property holder. Which will be a good thing, it will lead to better games if they can put a good team together.

The Darkness 3 could be a possibility then?

I hope so, I just played through The Darkness 2 for the first time last year and loved it!

Listening to the dialogue in the hub areas was so fucking great, brilliant voice acting + motion capture/animation and Mike was so great as the Darkness, the way he screeches about hearts just before/as you enter that bar near the beginning is amazing :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Look at this guy! He's having a blast and I love it:

This is the line I meant:

Even if you don't play the game you can use this quote video to keep your children in line, saying The Darkness will get you if you don't go to bed. Gary Larson used a similar method before The Darkness VO existed:

edit - I can't stop craughing at that Mike in the studio video. He loves life, takes being silly very seriously and I love him for it.
