Sony is still working on BC.

Do people really expect Sony to blocked these games from receiving enhancements?

Iraq, unfortunately.
Ah, so these free upgrades, whether on XBX or PS5, aren't a "proper" next gen version.

I guess remasters of current gen games are still in.

The XsX version (when it's available cuz it won't be available on launch) will be free for anyone who bought it on the Xbox One.

If the devs _want_ to do the update, it just comes down to cost. All patches delivered through the console owners platform costs money. At least it used to this gen.
So all Sony has to do is not monetize those updates and then all devs are free to deliver updates o ntheir games.
They would probably make a service/program out of it ofc, so they can still monetize on updates that are not in this vein.
Slap a cool name on it, and ppl stand in awe. Seems to work nicely;-)

Yeah, they clarified later that there is no update at all at launch, just an upgrade somewhere down the line, which is the same one they previously said was free, and the same one they're calling "proper" here.

So there is the upgrade version via patch.

And a remaster version for next-gen specific.

Obvious I want the PS5 remaster instead the upgraded version.

With MS its kinda odd because if everything is playable on Series X, and lets say its digital, then is it really this gen or next gen? (same with PS5).

In the olden days you couldn't take a PS1 game and stick it into a PS2. Now with series X and most likely PS5 thats not the case. There really isn't a point of making 2 versions, or cross gen versions at this point. Unlike this gen for example a game like Battlefield which was way more gimped on PS3 vs the PS4 version when it launched.

I guess they will probably hold back a few features to milk the "remastered" version for "next gen". Add in RT or 8K textures or something to keep selling the game. It worked with GTA V.

Which makes me think, will they release a "next gen" version of GTA V so the game can get to 150 million copies sold?

No, apparently the article is poorly written.
Seems like there's just one upgrade, and it's not at the consoles' launch.

From what I've read CDPR has partnered with Nvidia and RTX support will be available at launch. Hopefully they'll launch with DLSS 2.0 support. This game is going to drive a lot of GPU upgrades on PC to RT-capable hardware. CDPR has only said they'll use RT "in a few different ways".

I'll be buying the GoG DRM-free version to support CDPR and their pro-consumer approach. I'll probably buy the game twice like I did with TW3. CDPR and GoG are the best thing PC gaming has going atm. I'll be playing a "Netrunner" build for sure. I want to be a Cyberpunk Agent 47, with Silent Assassin approach.

As for the consoles, probably due to Nvidia marketing partnership the RT/Next-gen version/update won't come until later. If I had to venture a guess, that update will be free on XSX. Sony will dictate what happens with the PS5 version.

What? yes, you could stick Ps1 games into a Ps2 and they would work (except for a very small list of incompatible games).
I don't think next gen will kill remasters, but it will force devs/publishers to put more effort into them. They'll no longer be able to just increase the resolution, smooth out the framerate and call it a new release that sells for $40, because at least the Series X will do that natively.

So they'll have to make more remasters like Modern Warfare, which is more of a remake with new assets and improved visuals beyond just better resolutions:

For what the CD Project said, PS5 will also get a free enhancement patch for Cyberpunk PS4 users.

But they still can't announce it because Sony still has to announce that they will allow devs to release a PS5 version of PS4Pro-like enhacement patchs to enhace PS4 games when played on PS5, and/or the crossbuy featured in PSP+PS Vita+PS3+PS4.

Smart Delivery is just Sony's Crossbuy feature (+ Pro/X patches) with another name.
Sony implemented crossbuy in all their current gen and previous gen consoles and handhelds and PS5 is confirmed to be BC. For sure PS5 will feature crossbuy, and very likely PS4 Pro-like free enhacement patches. They just have to wait until announce them once desired (probably once they reveal the console or OS UI/UX and related features).

MS already has their own version of “crossbuy”, it’s called Play Anywhere. I can buy Forza 7 and play it on my launch Xbone, my X, or my PC. Where Smart Delivery takes it a step further is that when I bought Forza 7 there was no XSX version included but if the game gets a Series X upgrade, I’d get it for free. It has nothing to do with Sony or Cross Buy and it’s really just an extension of what they already have in place with base Xbone consoles and X. Now they just gave it a dumb marketing name. Sony will do the same stuff, see: DualSense or whatever the fuck it’s called 😆

MS is going the "PC" route of enhancing every first party game with either higher frames or resolution. You also get the benefit of faster loading with SSD on the Series X, but the narrative is a "boosted" Series X version compared to all other Xbox version (down to Xbox One)
On the PS5 side, all games made for PS5 is specific PS5 games, it won't run on PS4/Pro. Sony is playing the more usual game where each console generation is it's own.

You wont see anything major on Final fantasy rather than frame rate boost.

maybe we’ll always get the cutscene character models and some ray traced reflections.

I’m sure whatever PC gets, we will get something very similar.

On XSX you'll be getting the full blown next gen version if you buy the current gen version, once that next gen version is available.
You'll also likely be able to play the current gen version with higher settings on XSX BC way before the true next gen version releases.

uh. where on PC ? yo will get proper 4k with better texture and locked 60 frames. if Final Fantasy 15 is any indication its kinda almost a remaster version from FF15 on consoles. that big of a difference.

FF7R is Square Enix's baby. you bet your ass will give the PC a proper port for it.

As far as this is coming to Xbox, i do not think it will any time soon even after the 1 year exclusivity is over. Because i remember when it was annouced in 2015 they said PS4 first PC later. nothing about xbox.

Has Sony even confirmed if you buy a game on your PS4 or PS5 (disc or digital), you get it for both?

Or is Sony going to try getting people to buy the game twice?

I doubt this would be the reason. Very few people would buy it twice anyway when there's Backwards Compatibility.

Thinking about this, if there's an issue it has to be a technical one. Perhaps it's not as easy to use PS5 features on a PS4 game running in BC mode due to how they have their BC set up?

Given the numbers just released regarding Witcher 3 sales on PS over Xbox, I think Sony are just fine.

This is going to be an "issue" for more big companies. Having fully backwards compatible consoles means they won't be able to get your money twice thanks to ports and "remasters". Personally I'd wait 3 months and just buy a PS5/XSEX version along with the new console. Playing Cyberpunk in lower resolution with lower graphics settings will surely ruin part of the experience.

As of now they only mentioned that the PS5 will be backwards compatible, so most PS4 games will run on PS5.
So if you buy the PS4 version you'd be able to run it on PS5 (as happened in PS2, Vita or early PS3 skus).

As of now they didn't specify if there will be crossbuy for games that have separated PS4 and PS5 specific versions (which would mean that if you get the PS5 version you'd also get its PS4 version if available, but they confirmed some games will be PS5/next gen only so won't have PS4 version), or if there will PS5 free (or paid?) enhacement upgrades for PS4 games, like the PS4 Pro ones.
MS already has their own version of “crossbuy”, it’s called Play Anywhere. I can buy Forza 7 and play it on my launch Xbone, my X, or my PC. Smart Delivery doesn't add anything new, MS just gave it a name for the Series X implementation of both things. It's like xCloud, it's just the MS version of Remote Play and PS Now.

Sony will come out with something similar to smart delivery, otherwise they would be really shooting themselves in the foot PR wise

The shelf lifetime of games gets extended though. So, you can look at it as them losing money from no longer remaking a game and selling it a second time, or you can see it as them keeping on making money off old popular games at zero extra cost.

It's all very unclear and it sounds like making actual to spec next gen versions that take extra dev time to the point they need to be released later will be a massive money sink if they have to give it away for free.

The XsX version (when it's available cuz it won't be available on launch) will be free for anyone who bought it on the Xbox One.

This is how I see it:

CyberPunk 2077 - Gen 8
PS4
Xbox One

Cyberpunk 2077 - Gen 8 (with Gen 9 patches like TW3 on PS4PRo/X1X)
XsX (confirmed)
PS V (TBA but probably)

Cyberpunk 2077 - Gen 9 complete up-port/remake
XsX - (free upgrade if you own Cyberpunk 2077 Gen 8, otherwise purchase)
PS V - Will need to repurchase

Cyberpunk 2077 xxx Edition - Gen 9 with any DLC
XsX - Repurchase
PSV - Repurchase

However, what's not clear is how many devs/publishers will create a next gen version of their games without bundling in any DLC and calling it the complet edition and if the license also extends to those titles. I doubt it. But Microsoft could really do with clarifying exactly how it works, because if it's the case it could shift consoles now while people have noe eye on next gen to start building their libraries. For example, games like Siege etc.

If Microsoft are funding the up-ports and the publisher also gets a chance to sell that with 60% of the profits and 40% going to MS as capital investment repayment then it kind of makes sense.

Well to an extend, you don't know if Sony allows the PS4>PS5 within the same SKU.

True, but with a port or a remaster there's always a good opportunity to charge 60 or 30 bucks again and hope that impatient fans will buy it. ;)

That's true, but it does incur an investment of development resources, as small as it may be (and therefore, a risk).

That's a whole lot of conjecture.

I mean....everything is because we don't have all the information. If you purely stick to facts the conversation wouldn't be a conversation. If you reduce the topic to facts then

Cyberpunk nextGen patch will be avaialble at launch due to Smart Delivery
Cyberpunk nextGen patch for PS V at launch is an unknown

A proper nextGen version may or may not be in the works.

The reason this topic is exists is to speculate on the gaps that we dno't know or haven't been clarified.

If the "full blown next gen version" comes out a year after the current gen one, and I go out and buy the game second hand for XB1, will I just get the XSX version for free because it's in my library? What if I get the game at launch on XB1 then sell the disc? The thing is "full blown next gen version" coming later implies another disc all together.

He says the update will be playable "from the get-go on the next-gen", so that means the XB1 version but that clashes with the idea of the actual next gen version coming later. Sounds like an upgrade at launch, but a separate game later on. So what do you actually get for free as the upgrade?

It's all very unclear and it sounds like making actual to spec next gen versions that take extra dev time to the point they need to be released later will be a massive money sink if they have to give it away for free.

All this is a whole lot of conjecture, implications and all.

Was never considering picking this game up on playstation platforms anyway as the xbox controller is 100x over my preferred controller for first person games and that new ps controller isn't going to change that. They'll just never get the analogs or triggers right will they? :messenger_winking_tongue:

I think here comes into play Microsoft’s strategy of 1 unified platform, it makes porting much easier. Would be awesome if it includes ray tracing.

I bet PS5 will get a upgrade but a bit later.

did Sony offer crossbuy for high profile AAA games?

For example:

Did you get the PS4 version of The Last of Us for FREE, if you bought the PS3 Version? No! It's easy to offer it for a few selected, small indie games or so, with low budget.
But MS offers it FOR EVERY MS game, even for HALO INFINITE, so you get the true nextgen version for FREE, if you bought it on Xbox One. And NO, this is NOT about backwards compatibility! This is NOT about "enhanced patch"! We are talking here about the nextgen version.

Yep, kinda funny how Xbox fans fall for that stupid marketing name like if Smart Delivering is something new and amazing lol

it's something amazing though, isn't it? And it's something new, we all had to buy The Last of Us, GTA V again because we didn't have this in the past. Or did you get the last of us ps4 version for free, when you bought the ps3 version?

Oh yeah, its pretty easy for developers, of course they would offer it easily:

Microsoft’s DirectX 12 Ultimate unifies graphics tech for PC gaming and Xbox Series X

So a game can be optimized using DX12 Ultimate and run on a variety of Xbox devices and both AMD and Nvidia cards
.

That September release date throws a spanner in the works for me, on the one hand it’s day 1 purchase but on the other, the new machines come out soon after with an inevitable release on them....biggest spanner is the stupid virus though

I pretty much said all of this already in my reply. MS doesn’t have a special name for X enhancements either, aside from “X Enhanced” similar to “PS Pro Enhanced” or whatever it says on PS4 game cases, i forget. They gave it a name here to make users aware of it.

And it is something new because if you look at the start of this gen it was loaded with updates and cross gen third party titles you’d have to buy again. One of the first big PS4 games was just a remaster of Last of Us. You had to pay for that. With this program you don’t. The idea itself is obviously not new but there are new elements. Another key difference between cross buy is that these are big AAA titles supported too, and this party. Cross buy was mostly indies/PSN titles.

As I have a huge backlog for Ps4, for most new games now I can wait for my Ps5 anyway.

I think allot of releases will delay anyway not just becasue of Covid.

This is almost 7 years ago, I'm talking about right now.

If a new forza horizon would be released on xbox one, you would get the xbox series x version for free.
Titanfall 3 maybe, maybe not. Its not a microsoft studio game, so the publishers has to decide, for cyberpunk 2077 they confirmed it.

What difference would a next gen remaster offer? Max PC settings?

why wouldn’t a series x enchancsmsnt be the same damn thing? Are current gen versions not just down scaled pc builds?

There is no difference between an enhanced series x version and a remaster Ps5 version aside from charging you another 60$

Sony’s approach to backwards and forward compatibility is shit and an obsolete approach to it all.

Current gen won't have certain things like Ray Tracing.
