Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Talks Microtransactions -- "We Won't Be Aggressive"
CD Projekt Red says the goal is to get people to spend extra money and be happy about it.

Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer experience, which is coming after the single-player game releases, will have some form of microtransaction system, and now developer CD Projekt Red has shared some additional insight on its approach to them.
CD Projekt Red president Adam Kicinski said in an earnings report that the developer is looking for ways to get people to spend money and be happy about it.
Now Playing: Your Cyberpunk 2077 Questions Answered
"Well, we're never aggressive towards our fans!" he said. "We treat them fairly and we're friendly. So of course not--we won't be aggressive--but you can expect great things to be bought. The goal is to design monetization in a way that makes people happy to spend money. I'm not trying to be cynical or hide something; it's about creating a feeling of value."
Kicinski's comments match up with what executives from other giant game companies like EA, Take-Two, and Activision have said about their approach to microtransactions. They want to create a transaction where the consumer feels they are getting value for their money.
"Same as with our single-player games: we want gamers to be happy while spending money on our products," Kicinski said. "The same is true for microtransactions: you can expect them, of course, and [Cyberpunk 2077] is a great setting for selling things, but it won't be aggressive; it won't upset gamers but it'll make them happy--that's our goal at least."
Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer has yet to be formally announced, so it's too soon to say or guess at what its microtransactions might look like. In addition to these microtransactions for multiplayer, Cyberpunk 2077's single-player game will have free DLC and paid expansions, just like The Witcher 3 before it.
"You can expect more, actually. We're not going into too many details today, but everything will be clear before release," Kicinski said. "As we are close to the release, expect the post-release plans to be revealed fairly soon; a series of free DLCs and expansions will be described--as I said, you can expect it fairly soon and then everything will be made clear."

Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer spin-off is not going to come out anytime soon. The last we heard, CD Projekt Red said you should expect it to release in 2022 at the soonest.

Weren't these the guys who said they would never do microtransactions? Not a fan of multiplayer being tacked onto single player games these days. There is enough mulitplayer out there, we do not want that in a CD Project Red game.
Correct they did say no microtransactions

Seed balloon - they need to move the fanbase over from expecting no microstransactions like they claimed all last year, to a place where they can eventually say, "we've always said multiplayer will have microtransactions."
Let's remind everyone what CDPR has said in the past:
I think it's a bad idea to do microtransactions after you release a game. It seems like it's very profitable, though. It's probably a hard decision for the guy that runs the business to decide if we should do it or not. But if everyone hates it, why would we do something like that and lose the goodwill of our customers?
Also, that screenshot from the trailer:
Q. Microtransactions? A. In a singleplayer role playing game, are you nuts?
In May, when in-game purchases showed up on the ESRB descriptor, they said it was required because they sold expansions and reassured there were no microtransactions. (They're not lying about this, by the away. The ESRB wrote the descriptor exactly the way it did to mask microtransactions and loot crate gambling in the ratings and protect the publishers, as per their jobs.)
Then there is this tweet exchange:
@TrippHazardTV: I so HYPED for #Cyberpunk2077 just please please for the love of god DO NOT go down the route that other game developers have gone down and add micro-transactions into the Game, it doesn't need it and players don't want it, look forward to more content. #WeLoveYouCDPROJEKTRED
@CyberpunkGame: No microtransactions
Also this twitter exchange:
@Kyle_Shunner: @CyberpunkGame will there be micro transactions - Also getting so hyped for the game
@CyberpunkGame: Micro what?
They've set the expectation that microtransactions are against their company ethos, constantly deriding them and using it to build a reputation in the community. Because of that, they need to start moving the window over to them being acceptable in multiplayer so they can put them in. That starts by raising a kerfuffle now, not after they reveal their multiplayer mode where fans will lash out. That way when the game releases this controversy is behind them and their fanboys can claim "we've always known this" and retcon CDPRs statements to have always been about single-player only somehow, despite nothing above carrying any caveats of the sort.
CDPR is incredibly good at PR. They know exactly what they are doing, and are going to play the community like a fiddle to get out of the corner they boxed themselves into.

Whatever. I play many games with microtransactions and the only time I have spent money is by getting extra characters for DBZ Fighterz.

It can be done in a way that is not intrusive for people that don't want to spend any.

I remember how there was a rumor they would have MT, and then they got all indignant and put out a rebuttal and the internet sucked them off. Nice.

microtransactions?

yeah, im out....I'd have to upgrade my PC already...

maybe in a few years it will get a pricedrop and include everything...looking forward to it!

Microtransactions in multiplayer games for skins etc is kind of so standard now it's beyond getting pissed off about really.

If they have any microtransactions inside the singleplayer a la Deus Ex Mankind Divided then it will be a sign that we've flipped timelines and CD Projekt are now an evil corporation.

He's talking microtransactions in the single player, isn't he?
C77 online will be added much later, and possibly with even more microtransactions.

I'm not happy to spend money even when I need to do it in order to live, how can they do it with digital things?

Google used to be the good guys too. It happens. Just as long as they don't bring DRM to Gog, although Gog Galaxy walks a thin line.

This game is going to flop. The more news that comes out about it, the worse it seems.

The MTX will probably be skins and outfits for multiplayer; coats, skins, genital size

stock character is 300 lbs, and beard grows on neck only...theres a man clit hidden in there somewhere

but you play the same game otherwise, so its cool

Damn, I always saw through them and their apologetic fanbase before but recently started to like them because of Cyberpunk and free Witcher 3 nextgen upgrade. It seems I have to reconsider this.

To be honest, I view singleplayer as an entirely different product from multiplayer. You don't want to have to worry about microtransactions? No worries, don't play multiplayer.

Are there any fairly recent examples of online multiplayer that don't have microtransactions?

So a third person perspective is in, eh? Otherwise pointless IMO

If only my penis was as big as my GamerScore!
This thread reads like it is full of 2K, Activision, and 505 Games PR moles. They are giving us free upgrades to not only 2077, but also the Witcher 3, a 7 year old game. Who cares if they have microtransactions for multiplayer?

Single-player won't feature microtransactions.
The multiplayer campaign, which will be a separate game entirely, will.

When was google good? Right from the start they were all about collecting user data and everyone was sucking them off for it for some reason. Altavista life.

About CD project red: They saw that gta money and decided not to leave it on the table. now that theyve broken their rule you can expect dlc in single player too (maybe not this fane but the next one).

You're so innocent.

"It's armor for a horse for 5 bucks, it doesn't do anything to the core gameplay"

CDPR is keeping you hostage. Not only are they forcing you to buy CYberpunk 2077 multiplayer campaign, which evidently they are, they're also holding you at point blank range and making you buy cosmetics.

Being charged for services you voluntarily decide to purchase?!
It's positively outrageous, I say!
