Eh, 'lacks soul' is one of those ephemeral critiques that you don't have to defend. There's probably a pinch of cynicism in the RE4make (it was always guaranteed to sell), but most of the changes highlighted here are part of the game's modernization, not just in terms of technical execution, but also in terms of modern audience preferences and expectations. I don't necessarily agree with that approach, but I understand why large companies, funneling millions of pounds into a project want to strike a balance between authenticity and mass-market appeal. The campy B-movie vibes of the original are all still there to experience on modern consoles if you're into that, the remake is a modern product created with modern conventions in mind.
