Criterion Games Believes A New Burnout Entry 'Would Be Absolutely Phenomenal Now'

https://www.purexbox.com/news/2022/...would-be-absolutely-phenomenal-nowCriterion's Kieran Crimmins, creative director on Unbound, recently sat down with Eurogamer to talk all things NFS, and Burnout of course. EG couldn't resist bringing up Burnout, to which Crimmins happily gave his thoughts:
"It's not something we're looking at doing now. Right? It's not my next game or anything like that. Not that I could say if it wasn't, but I guess I can say that it's not the next game I will work on. But if you're talking about the two games that the studio has the most passion for, they're obviously Need for Speed and Burnout."
"We love those two franchises, and Burnout has a unique take on racing that I think would be absolutely phenomenal now. So I guess what I'm saying is, I would love to do that. And I hope that if everything goes well with these games, and we can expand the team, then maybe we can make one of those as well. It's not in the immediate future plans or anything like that but man, it'd be really fun."
Clearly, the developer is laser-focused on Need for Speed Unbound right now, as it launches in just a few short days on Xbox! However, Burnout still seems near and dear to Criterion, and we'd certainly welcome its return as well.

Criterion believes that it would be phenomenal to work on a new entry in the Burnout franchise.

But it's not happening anytime soon because EA has no interest at all. Need to try to find a way to finally put Need for Speed in the ground too.

MORE DEAD FRANCHISES! That's what we want from EA's old IPs right guys!? Who's with me? More dead ips! More dead ips! Let's give them applause! Why aren't you applauding guys?

This isn’t the Criterion that made Burnout, it’s just a bunch of people wearing the name like a skin suit. Who cares what they say.

Although a lot of old Criterion members broke off and formed or joined other studios, I think there are still enough of the original people there that could give proper direction to a new Burnout game (if it were to happen).

It already exists

Three Fields Entertainment was formed by Alex Ward, Fiona Sperry, and Paul Ross, former members of Criterion Games, the original developers of the Burnout franchise, which was published by Electronic Arts (EA). Around 2011, EA assigned the Need for Speed series to Criterion, de-emphasizing the Burnout series, and then later in 2013 moved about 80% of Criterion's staff to Ghost Games to continue Need for Speed. This move left Ward and Sperry concerned about Criterion's state within EA, and decided to leave, along with Ross, to start Three Fields.

We are the lazy generation. Remaster Burnout 3 please
How has this game not been remastered with some of the tracks from Burnout Revenge to add variety to the campaign.

Just make a remake like THPS 1+2
Takedowns campaign structure, Burnout 3 and Revenge tracks, limited traffic checking, all the cars from both games and a real crashmode.

Thats 60 dollars worth of content right there.

For me would be phenomenal if it followed the formula of any of the burnout games before paradise, or done a remaster of any of them games, but for me just couldnt get into paradise with its open world, and would say its the worst in the whole series

Imagine the destruction with the new hardwares.

When a small company gets bought by a larger one it usually gets destroyed in its output quality after a few years. I can't think of any example of one improving.

2k also just released a statement, "A new Bioshock would be amazing now!".
Also, Rockstar chimed in, "A new GTA would be awesome, wouldn't it?"

I enjoyed the audio but it wasn’t really a burnout game.
It depends on which intersection you stopped at. Road Rage and Marked Man felt like burnout. The others not so much. It would have been better if there were more of those events.

Cool can it be track based with fun locations from different parts of the world like Burnout 3?
Oh I see it's another boring open world city but now with wacky zoomer characters that won't shut up.

I’m not a fan of some of the lazy bandwagons folks tend to jump on.

There’s absolutely nothing in that interview that suggests that EA is the reason why new Burnout games aren’t being made. Only things explicitly mentioned are:
1. They’re working on NFS Unbound and another game
2. They need those games to go well and possibly a studio expansion so they can make more of their passion projects.

I bought NFS Hot Pursuit Remastered last Friday, it was in Sony's Black Friday deals for 4 euros.
Couldn't pass.....

1 of Criterions last gems

EA only understand the opposite wants of their customers. So expect more shit you don’t care about.

I’d love a new Burnout, but these cunts won’t deliver even if they did make one.

I'm playing Burnout 3 with widescreen patch through an emulator on my pc - it's still one of the greatest arcade racers. Really don't care about a new game, just remaster Burnout 3 with online features and 120fps.

I hope just putting this statement out there at least indicates Criterion is looking at a path towards developing a new one. No greater hole in my heart than the one left by Burnout.
