E-Man

RQAWt.jpg

Millions of years ago, a distant star went supernova. Out of its destruction, a new life form was born, when a packet of energy spat off during the explosion developed sentience. Gradually it wandered the universe, learning and developing its understanding - and with understanding came a desire to find other intelligent life to communicate with. Travelling from world to world, it finally encountered (non-sentient) life on Sirius IV, and figured out a way to duplicate the appearance of that life with its own form. It encountered humanoid life on the planet Orgee, and learned of evil when it witnessed the ruler of that planet's evil activities. Assuming humanoid form for the first time, it (or he, given the form it assumed) helped free the inhabitants from their despot.

Travelling on, the energy being spotted a spacecraft travelling through Earth's solar system. Entering the vehicle, the being copied the appearance of one of the robots on board, but this slight increase in mass caused the vessel to veer off course and crash on Earth. Departing the downed ship, the energy being got trapped in high tension wires and transported along them, until he arrived inside a light bulb around the dressing room mirror of exotic dancer Nova Kane (a.k.a. Katrinka Colchnzski). She released him from the bulb by smashing it, and he took on human form again. He spent the night in her car battery, and the next morning spotted a poster of Albert Einstein in her apartment. When she explained the meaning of the formula E=mc displayed on under the scientist's picture, the energy being recognised that it described him well (being the relation between energy and matter), and dubbed himself E-Man. Inspired by comics he found, he developed a costume, and became a superhero. He soon added Mike Mauser and a koala named Teddy to his list of allies.

American Flagg

y6fow.jpg

According to the series back-story, in 1996 (13 years after the comic originally appeared), everything collapsed. Nukes were flying not just in the Middle East, but also in Western Europe. Black plague in Asia and food riots in Europe. Banking system melts down, just like many nuclear power plants. Islamic uprisings in places where you wouldn't even think there was Islam. So the U.S. government, along with the executive boards of most major corporations, moves to Mars.

Now, it's 2031. On Earth, things are worse than ever — gang wars every Saturday night, political rivalries settled by shooting matches, everybody doped up on media overload and exotic drugs, economic depression to make its century-past counterpart look like a bad hair day, and the government, still up on Mars, couldn't care less.

Into this steps Reuben Flagg, an out-of-work actor raised on Mars, transforming his screen personality into real life as he takes over the job of representing the government and enforcing its law in 21st-century Chicago. He is assisted by a talking cat named Raul and the fact that he's one of the few characters in sight with anything resembling a conscience.

Many of these Ronin turned to banditry to survive, others found work with minor lords. And a small number traveled the musha shugyo -- the warrior pilgrimage -- to hone their spiritual and martial skills. World of Hurt

sTIiv.jpg

WORLD OF HURT is a comic strip love letter to the Black action films of the 1970s. I’m not talking about the flicks with signifyin’ Technicolor pimps performing slow-motion karate or anything featuring Ray Milland’s head surgically attached to Rosie Grier’s body. If you want to know where I’m coming from with WORLD OF HURT, check out flicks likeShaft, Superfly, The Mack, Trouble Man, Foxy Brown, or Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off. Although none of these movies boasted massive budgets or flawless production values either, there was an undeniable edge and raw energy to them. These were films that spoke to a previously untapped market of urban Black audiences, who finally got to see their own heroes, and a bit of their own turbulent world, refracted through the prism of the silver screen. For instance, in Trouble Man, Robert Hooks’ character “Mr. T.” tracked down stick-up men and hustled pool sharks in a Los Angeles that was every bit as tough, seamy and hardboiled as the one where Humphrey Bogart’s Philip Marlowe hunted for missing dames and slugged it out with blackmailers. The thing is, Mr. T. and the brothers (and sisters) did it with style, baby!

To me the list says "Just because it's independent, doesn't mean it's good"

Any one issue of Journey Into Mystery makes me happier than most of the list.

C'mon Krypt, where's your sense of wonder!?!?

Have you at least tried half the stuff on the list?

I love most of the stuff on the list. I was fucking with Bandit.

Martha Washington is one of my fave books, well ever. And my copy of Brat Pack has a sketch in it just for me! :)

Bandit, have you ever got the feeling that The Boys is either a love letter or a lightly veiled ripoff of Brat Pack?

At least he can get a solo book. Unlike some other boring ass characters.

Like Doctor Voodoo?

Well the "good news" is Gambshit isn't black, so he'll get at least four more issues to his run than Doctor Voodoo. :p

C'mon Krypt, where's your sense of wonder!?!?

Have you at least tried half the stuff on the list?

He's going through his "blissful ignorance" phase again. I won't bother going metacritic on his clowny ass, that's some gaming side shit. :\

Every week I'll add more titles based on cultural impact, expanding the medium, and that are noteworthy for risk taking.

Here's a fantastic interview with Evan Dorkin. The guy really cares about comics as a medium. Something that contributes to our culture and shouldn't be perpetually ghettoized, viewed as a children's medium that functioning adults ought to grow out of.

You don't grow out of music, fiction, television, or film. Your tastes may change, but you still enjoy these things throughout your life.

Why should you be expected to grow out of comics, other than retarded (verb, not noun) cultural views of the medium?

Answer the Brat Pack question, Bandit!

And metacritic? You should already know my opinion of reviews. Gathering them together just multiples my disdain.

I already said I own/love most of the shit worthwhile on the list. I love Indy AND Supers so I'm the winner overall. ;)

And yeah, the view that comics (or LEGO, or videogames) are something to outgrow is idiocy.

Your list is missing the amazing Starchild by James A Owens

823347-essential_starchild_1_super.jpg

The story revolves around the small village of Raveloe and its inhabitants, specifically the Higgins family, whose patriarch, Ezekiel Higgins, disappeared for many years, only to return without fanfare, never having aged a day. The graphic novel Awakenings tells the story of the Higginses a few generations down the line; however. Ezekiel's grandson, Anders, and his friend, Siegfried, are on their way to Raveloe to meet up with Anders' uncle, Matthew Higgins, Anders's uncle, who has gone to Raveloe to unravel some of the family's secrets. After his return, Ezekiel Higgins lived the life of a recluse and then disappeared again, leaving behind a journal that Matthew, his son, has been trying to glean secrets from. Unknown to Matthew, however, his half-brothers, Rumer and Rhysling Learmont, have been living in the mill that Ezekiel lived in, hiding some of the family secrets. If this sounds complex, it is only the merest scratching of the surface of a story that, when all is told, will involve nearly every American folkloric character, as well as some traditionally British ones, including Titania, Oberon, Thomas the Rhymer, and the Wild Hunt.

So I read Batman Inc, The Long Road Home, and the Return of Bruce Wayne or whatever today and I have to say I didn't really get any of it. It seems conceptually fairly solid but it's hard as fuck to follow and I don't feel all that effective, excepting the Stephanie Brown issues. On that note I also read one of the Steph Brown Batgirl trades and it was pretty damn rad, so, yeah.

The Cass Cain Batgirl Vengeance or Revengeance or whatever the fuck it was called really sucked though. Does she only have Destruction's Daughter, Kicking Assassins and Fists of Fury as trades?

I was just saying to myself, "Hey self. You should look into getting some more indie comics." And lo, here is our new thread! GG, Bandit.

Answer the Brat Pack question, Bandit!

My appreciation for Garth Ennis is offset by my jaundiced view of Darick Robertson's art. Especially after reading an interview where Robertson admits to being a massive Brian Bolland fan, and all I can see now is a guy doing a piss poor Brian Bolland impersonation. :\

Brat Pack is the better deal overall from what I recall reading back in the comic shop in 1996.

Good news for los tebeo digitales fans - Atomic Robo is now on Nook!

Since I'm still analogue I just added it to my pull list since the first issue of the new story arc was out today, and I grabbed the Science Adventure issues from Brian Clevinger when I was at Heroes Con. :3

Speaking of Heroes Con - Kickstarter for 30th anniversary documentary. There's a chance I may have been filmed for this during one of the Quickdraws. At some point a camera was pointed at me as I choked on a sketch, but I didn't sign any release form so. . .

In the gristle and nipples department - new Simon Bisley today! Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Bisley drew it. I bought it. This is law!

I need to add Heavy Metal to my pull list as well. They're bringing back Alex Horley! In addition to Tom Raney and a bunch of other fantastically talented artists.

FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER! PUNCHING DINOSAURS!

And Mr. Monster will be returning too!

I too still have a sentimental spot in my heart for my old heroes, but I can't agree with the politics of the companies that own them. Nor can the new comics match my fond memories of the old, so I've moved on. Yeah there's 800+ issues of Superman, but how many of those issues can stand toe to toe with Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

What's not to get? Bruce was lost in time after being zapped by Darkseid. Then you got suckered into buying a shitty cashgrab filler miniseries that was unconnected to the actual story and muddied the waters. And then Batman Inc was amazing.

Have you read the Batman and Robin arc that ran parallel to the Return of Bruce Wayne? That fills in a few gaps and explains what Barbatos is.

Seems fairly simple to me? I will concede that the big Special for Batman Inc was really confusing, I'm still not entirely sure how the stuff with Otto Netz fits together, although I feel that is the point since it was all trippy and Prisoner-esque.

Remember, if it's Batman and has Grant Morrison's name on it, it's one big 5 year story. Jumping on in the middle is a bit like starting the Song of Fire and Ice Books at A Feast for Crows.

Also TToB, that is an impressive OP, must have taken you ages.

Looking through that list, it's staggering how much Image have put out in the last year too. I think 2012 may be one of the best years for indie ever.

I bought that issue of Spawn on release day, thought it was some kind of misprint. Weird how they just have that single block of color.

I remember when I thought Spawn was good. It should have ended long, long ago.

How much ass is DC kicking these days!? I love almost every book in the new 52. Marvel needs to focus less on events and more on compelling stories. Stop handing everything off to Bendis.

Wow, a comics thread that isn't a marvel/sc lovefest? Have I died and gone to comic heaven????

That Four Horsemen looks awesome, and has been duely added to my list of new comics to purchase.

Comics comics comics! Been reading my haul this week on the bus this morning.

Batman Inc was pretty good, although it was a bit of a rehash/catchup issue for those not following along properly at home. Still, it was cool to get an actual Talia story. Have we ever seen her mother before? For some reason I had it in my head that Nyssa from Death and the Maidens was her mother? No biggie though. I really loved that panel where whe looks disarmingly at her kidnapper, that was not only a lovely picture but a hilarious moment, very clever. I think that Talia warring with Bruce because he's spurned her too many times is also a great idea for a story. Your worst enemy is your ex girlfriend baby momma, it's a nice twist on the superhero stuff.

I do wonder how DC are going to go back to 'regular' bat-stories after these defining runs by Morrison and Snyder that are all about family and history though. The reason they're so compelling is because they're layering in all this meaning to a largely overlooked backstory. But at the same time, there's only so much it can take before you're left thinking "oh, ANOTHER spectre from Bruce's past??" (much like the dumb Nobody in Tomasi's B&R. Ducard was fine, you didn't need to add this silliness). We shall see.

FF was quite lovely, I'm still enjoying there one-and-done issues that Hickman is back-loading here. I think that the run will read very oddly in omnibus though, as the book will climax at 2/3rds in and then carry on with these lovely fluffy adventure and relationship stories. Can't complain though, they're all been great so far.

Spider-Men was much more like it too. Still blown away by every page of Pichelli's art, she's a real star in the making. And stuff actually happens this issue, great! I absolutely loved the mysterio reveal (that will mean nothing to new readers since it's picking up a two year old plot thread, but it's rewarding for me). I think Spider-Men will make a good trade, but it's still a little frustrating to read in singles.

Good stuff so far, and loads more to read too. It's a great week!

Conclusion to Hickman's Ultimates story was awful. I can't believe I've wasted time and money on that crap. I'm dropping the whole Ultimate line.

I've stopped pre-ordering Ult Spidey and Ult X-Men, if Ultimates starts being bad then i'll be done and have one less universe to try to remember continuity.

also, Marvelous Land of Oz on MDCU is enjoyable, i'm liking it more than the first mini Wizard of Oz just because i'm less familiar with the later work so the story plots are fresher to me. I'm also finding the dialog a lot more fun/quirky whereas i thought it was a bit straightforward and bland in Wizard.

Just so everyone knows, TToB did NOT stop by my table at Heroes Con, so he either doesn't exist (likely) or does not actually support the spirit of independent comics (unlikely).

I had a sketch all ready for him too.

So far with the comics that have been released, it's your loss. BANG!

I've seen a lot of dislike towards Night Owl #1, did you read it? Thoughts?

Part of it is just that i didn't really like Watchmen that much to begin with, i enjoyed it overall, but have no desire to read more, ESPECIALLY a bunch of side project prequels when i don't like prequels to anything in general.

Brotherhood of Shipley's
I was behind on a lot of books and got to reading last night:

Daredevil #3 - #8:
Picked up the Waid run on eBay and (other than the weird Klaw issue) it's amazing so far. I heard it has faltered a bit lately, but these issues so far have been awesome. I especially liked DD and Spidey's banter and chemistry in the ASM crossover about Black Cat. Great stuff.

AVX #6:
Finally some movement. This was a really entertaining book that finally moved the plot more. Issues 1-5 should've been condensed into 3 books. Also, the Infinite comic that came with this was fantastic and arguably better than the standalone book.

Amazing Spider-Man Spider Island:
Meh, this was cluttered and all over the place. Had some cool moments but it was just way too crazy for me. Luckily the issues following it (Daredevil Crossover & Morbius issue) were pretty good. I'm almost caught up on ASM, hope Ends of the Earth is decent.

Spider-Men #2:
Loved it. USM has been consistently my favorite book in the last decade and Bendis is writing this amazingly. First book was a little shallow, but normal for a Bendis start. This book was a lot of fun and gives us a peek at what the PP/MM dynamic is going to be like.

Are there any other Marvel books that are fantastic (like Daredevil) that I'm not reading? I'm reading X-Force but I'm not really reading anything else that's Avengers or X-Men. Is Wolverine and the X-Men really as good as everyone says?

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
I'm confused by how a bunch of those titles in the OP could possibly be considered "indie".

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise

You see Talia's mother in flashback in Son of the Demon, although its status in the canon is pretty unclear.

I highly recommend buying the B.P.R.D. Plague of Frogs hardcovers instead of that 10 year old B.P.R.D. trade. Much nicer edition and a better deal.

I edited my original post which sounded dickish in retrospect. I do appreciate all the effort OP put in.

So if I don't have any HB or BPRD, I should just get the Library Editions for HB and this for BPRD? http://www.amazon.com/dp/1595826092/?tag=neogaf0e-20

That would be my recommendation. I went with the trades for Hellboy and I regret it. Such a seminal series that ages like a fine wine, it deserves that beautiful, oversized treatment.

Yup. And so tightly connected. You'll want to be able to go back again and again as new connections are revealed. (As recently as literally the latest BPRD issue, Exorcism.)

Ok thanks, I guess I'll start with HB LE 1. That's a lot of money and shelf space considering how much I'd have to catch up with, but at least I didn't have to double dip on the hcs.

So looks like there are 4 HB LEs and 3 BPRDs to be current. That's not too bad I guess.

YEah, that Son of The Demon stuff is funny since Morrison uses it as a lynchpin of his whole run, and yet he contradicts so much of it at the same time. Hypertime yo!
