Clap Hanz Golf - Everybody's Golf / Hot Shots developer now is on Apple Arcade

Longtime Sony Japan Studio collaborator Clap Hanz has released its first independently-produced game, a golf game called Clap Hanz Golf for Apple Arcade.

The company had been producing the Hot Shots Golf / Everybody's Golf / Minna no Golf franchise since 1999, when it took over from Camelot Software Planning (who left to go do Mario Golf for Nintendo,) and worked exclusively for Sony all that time despite being an independent studio. They've had Everybody's Golf games on PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, PS Vita, even PSVR (no word on a PS5 version... unlikely that there will be one) and they also made spin-off games like Hot Shots Tennis and Everybody's Stress Buster (a minigame collection.)

(*I realize this will quite quickly turn into a "F*** you Jimbo!!!" thread, but it still seemed a game worthy of its own discussion thread. Clap Hanz are vets, hopefully this does well for them, assuming it's good?)

Haven't played it yet. Looks scaled back in scope from Everybody's Golf PS4 (for better or worse,) without the kart riding or other distractions, also no Online multiplayer (only Local VS) in the launch release. The clubhouse stuff looks nice, character models are... interesting (reminds me a lot of the Hot Shots 2 characters where they went bigger and less Japanese'ey), trailer doesn't show the meter system but I assume it's very similar to old Hot Shots.

What time is it?
I'm a massive fan of Clap Hanz and HSG/EG but with how they've handled DLC and clubs the last two iterations, I'm a little worried what that will look like on a mobile. Still excited to check it out.

I wish I could buy it outright but I guess now is as good of a time as ever to try the free month of AA.

Love me some Everybody's Golf, but that art direction? It's like they desperately try to make it appealing to western audiences.
Will I buy a PC version? YES.

Character designs don't seem to far off from the rest of the series (last game excluded) and it's never really been the strong suit of the series.

I am a Hot Shots Golf addict. Been playing the series like mad recently in anticipation for the Masters.
Hot Shots Golf Fore might be my favorite overall PS2 game. Its crazy how much content is in that game.
This looks interesting and I wonder what chance it has at popping up on other platforms.

Very interesting Sony didnt lock up this studio - I thought they WERE 1st party? For me, Hot Shots/Everybodys Golf is at the top of Sony's exclusive franchises. What is going on with Sony these days?

To me the game is 'Minna' because me and and a buddy played the Japanese versions almost exclusivly during the PS2 era. I'm *almost* blissfully unaware of the western localization.

This is Apple Arcade, not traditional mobile, so monetization may not be as greedy as a mobile Hot Shots could get. Then again, like you said, the series was already nickling you when you had to pay for it in a box.

Apple Arcade doesn't lock onto exclusives (although it could stay there,) and this is Clap Hanz big move to move forward (they totally redid their website and barely mention 20 years of Hot Shots...) so I assume a high chance off cross-release if this isn't locked in and if this does well.

As far as why Sony didn't keep them locked in, for one thing Japan Studio is pretty much no longer and so SCE WWS would have to re-negotiate with Clap Hanz to continue it or start something new. But also, it feels like the PS4 game kind of exhausted the franchise. It did everything it could with a Hot Shots and added a ton of lifestyle stuff (which people faulted it for,) and it still didn't seem to make much impact (EG VR didn't bust out either.) If Sony had gone crazy with Hot Shots and added more Mario style minigames, then maybe it could have continued as a one-game-a-generation release (and they're not saying that there's never going to be a PS5 Hot Shots... it just seems extremely obvious that it's not happening,) with maybe a Tennis game in between sometimes, but it also makes sense that Sony cut Clap Hanz loose to do what they wanted to do since Sony had little reason to keep it internal besides the legacy.

I was mentioning this in an earlier post, but these character models totally remind me of what it felt like to transition from HSG1 to HSG2 on PS1. The goofier or uglier or stereotyped character models have been a staple for a long time, but they tended to front-loaded the presentation with characters like Yuna or Billie, and this is the first time since HSG2 that I can recall feeling like there's not a "Standard Hot Shots character" to identify with before getting invested in the crazier characters.

So maybe it's not a ploy to sell out to the West? These seem to be the character models Masashi Muramori has always wanted, and maybe just Hot Shots traditions steered him towards the more anime-styled characters.

(BTW, yes, the same studio designer has been there at Clap Hanz since 1998!)

The character design is fantastic here! I don’t get what people want if they complain about this. Love the old guy! Pixar-like

Don’t know any details about Apple Arcade though but I assume it’s Apples’s Gamepass alternative?
It’s time to check it out. Sakaguchi’s Final Fantasy-like RPG Fantasian is there as well, which looks amazing.

Doesn't appear to be a three click system but rather touch based. I don't have a controller but it looks like it would just use the right analog as an alternative to the touchscreen. Bummer.

I guess my last hope is that Mario Golf ends up great (never been a huge fan of the series) or Sony pulls their head out of their asses and contracts Clap Hands to make a proper Everybody's Golf.

Apple Arcade is iOS, but also Mac and Apple TV, which do not have touch devices, so it's not that. The video doesn't show the interface, but there are a few first-plays up now that it's out.

It is not the traditional three-click system, although it's also not quite a flick-golf game. There's some analog-stick directionality for slice and topspin/backspin (on a mobile device, you control it with your fingers; on a PC or TV, you control it with dual analog.) So kind of like the Tiger PGA games, although it doesn't seem to favor smoothness of swing motion (or, these players posting the first videos just are not good?)

Yeah, I signed up for Apple Arcade and gave it a whirl. Three click is golf games to me. I can understand why people like analogue swings and motion controls but it's just not for me. I'm pretty bummed out right now.

I have been a huge fan since PS1 and played the crap out of PS2 and PSP...

PSP titles are the GOATs. Maybe I'll delete my saves and go through them again. World Invitational was pretty great too until the started selling new levels of clubs every couple of months.

Same here, free month. The game is still ticking my boxes. Love the style! Perfect game to play with the kids. Just did one tournament, unlocked the busty boss girl, playing on Apple TV with a nimbus controller. No complaints here, it’s a free game! (for now lol)

Jumping into Fantasian next, looks great!

I loved the series. In fact it changed my mind as far as all sports games that tried to look and feel as realistic as they could and got more boring.

I honestly always thought it was a SONY game lol. HSG on PS2 and Mario Golf on OG Gameboy...those are my gold standards.

*Ack*
Heart skipped a beat when the thread was bumped. I thought it finally got versions on other platforms.
As for Sony buying the studio, they had 20+ years of close cooperation without tying the knot. So Clap Hanz got Apple as their new sugar daddy instead.
