Chinese Internet Users Who Uploaded Coronavirus Memories To GitHub Have Been Arrested

A group of volunteers in China who worked to prevent digital records of the coronavirus outbreak from being scrubbed by censors are now targets of a crackdown. Cai Wei, a Beijing-based man who participated in one such project on GitHub, the software development website, was arrested together with his girlfriend by Beijing police on April 19. The couple were accused of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble," a commonly used charge against dissidents in China, according to Chen Kun, the brother of Chen Mei, another volunteer involved with the project. Chen Mei has been missing since that same day. On April 24, the couple's families received a police notice that informed them of the charge, and said the two have been put under "residential surveillance at a designated place." There is still no information about Chen Mei, said his brother. It is unclear whether the arrest of the couple and the disappearance of Chen are directly linked to their GitHub project, named "Terminus2049."

Chinese citizens had been turning to Microsoft-owned GitHub after the outbreak began, as it remains one of the few major foreign websites that can still be accessed in China. Now, volunteers linked to these GitHub pages are facing the growing risk of reprisals from authorities. Another GitHub page, #2020 nCov memory, which was initiated by seven volunteers around the world to chronicle personal accounts and news stories of the outbreak, is no longer publicly available. The team behind #2020 nCov memory said in an email to Quartz that they will suspend operation of the page and collection of submissions due to the "situation" in China, and that they hope to see "sunshine tomorrow."

Fuck China
Let’s not turn this into a hashtag. The CCP is the problem. The more stuff like this happens, and the more people are shown it happens, then hopefully their citizens some day reach a breaking point

Edit: I’ve met some terrible people in china, but also good ones. Same as anywhere else. They need to get their shit fixed

It is what it is.

I’m definitely not saying fuck Chinese people. Never said that. Never will say that.

On the contrary, I sympathize with the Chinese people quite sincerely. I can’t imagine having to deal with their Orwellian “government” that controls every aspect of their every day lives. Must be awful.

Months back, I voiced my disappointment in Lebron James shilling out for his Chinese sponsorship money when the Hong Kong protests were ramping up.

Anyway, speaking strictly of China, as the global terror entity it is, and its international economic omnipresence, Fuck It.

Fuck China.

Yeah, I get that. But what I mean is like if one country just went all #fuckamerica, then that would just make Americans more nationalistic. I would be, certainly. It wouldn’t make them fix anything, just make it worse

The CCP has been elevated to represent China through whatever mechanism their culture has evolved. It is perfectly valid to say Fuck China.

What is China trying to hide ?
Real CFR, other mechanisms of action and target sites, real infection curve, real % of casualties, patient 0 data...you know... RELEVANT epidemiological data.

They're hiding things in order to not lose face (not for the rest of the world, but within their own people).

Smoothbrains finally starting to catch up on the shit us big brains have been posting about for ages. They’ll never admit it though.

I'm aware of China's investment in renewables but that's not what I mean by the China problem. What I am referring to is China overtaking the US as the dominant global superpower when the US cuts its economic balls off to satisfy the climate change beast. Think about the cultural ramifications of China dictating the terms of global trade when they subject their own people to slave labour, are willing to murder journalists who criticise the government, have an organ harvesting black market, have no respect for IP or copyright, have a saving face culture that disincentivises telling the truth if it means upsetting the hierarchy, and just abolished term limits so that Xi Jinping is now effectively a dictator for life. We are talking about a totalitarian communist regime that is fuelled by the economic prosperity provided by a fundamentally capitalist economic system with a monoculture unencumbered by the social tensions of race and gender issues that we have in the West. This is not a culture we want in charge of the world. Besides, their investment in renewables is primarily to emancipate them from fossil fuel-driven Western economies, not some greater moral purpose.

He stole my catchphrase the way China steals intellectual property.
Since China is locking its citizens out of the web maybe the rest of the world should now lock China out all together. Seeing as the only people left will be government spies and corporate thieves.

And we are starting to see that in the west we aren't a stones throw away from descending into the same ugly tactics as the CCP.

And in some ways the CCP might be better than the clown media going on right now.
What? How the hell is the CCP better than our clown media. What are you even talking about.

Nothing against people who have Chinese origins or people from Taiwan, etc.

But most people I have met who were from peoples republic of China were racist assholes with no manners whatsoever.

I didn't like them even before that Corona shit happened.

So yeah, fuck them.
I said it.

It's unfortunate that you've only met the "New money"or tourists from China. On the whole the normal people living day to day are pretty nice and left me with the impression of "Why can't you be just like this when you get off the plane to wherever you are going?".

Not going for woke points, but at least I can say any Chinese person that I've interacted with in China hopefully had the impression that British people are good. That whole thing teachers used to say about being "An ambassador for your school" when you were on school trips.
