Man they been saying this stuff for YEAARS now.

I still maintain it's going to be a sequel to the Switch. It's been 5 years it's about that time isn't it..

We shall see. The only difference between a sequel to the Switch and a pro model in my opinion is that I believe that this new Switch will have a new gimmick and exclusive games to go along with it.

I honestly think this time they will add better hardware and that's it, how many more gimmicks can they add to the switch? Maybe a better vr solution

I wonder what the infamous "Nintendo Caveat" will be...

Digital Only?
Exclusive Games?
Double the price of regular Switch?
Same shitty Analogue Sticks?
*New* Nintendo Switch branding?
5G by Huawei?
Another Pikmin game?
Built in Wuhan?
Removal of built-in stand?
Mario Kart 9 with Birdo still missing?

Nintendo's long-awaited Switch upgrade is expected to be shown ahead of E3 2021, according to a report published by Bloomberg [paywall] today and Eurogamer's own sources.

I understand this is to ensure third-parties working on games which support the upgraded Switch are free to announce these projects at E3, and before Nintendo's own digital showcase later in that week.

(Nintendo's event has yet to be formally dated but is currently set to slot in after other publishers towards the end of E3, though of course dates can still shift.)

A pre-E3 airing also allows Nintendo to focus its E3 reveals on its upcoming software line-up, where fans hope to hear updates on the long-awaited Breath of the Wild 2 and long, long-awaited Metroid Prime 4.

Bloomberg's report states the new Switch will be released in "September or October" and be sold alongside the cheaper Switch Lite, with the current Switch model phased out over time.

Switch manufacture has been difficult over the past year, Bloomberg says, with part shortages affecting manufacture. But the Switch is able to avoid the more serious chip shortages which have affected PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S as it uses different components.

Nintendo has form in revealing new hardware, or details such as the name of an upcoming system, ahead of E3 itself for similar reasons. Nintendo 3DS was first announced several months prior to E3 2010, and we also first heard the name "Wii" a month before E3 2006 so everyone could get used to that.

Nintendo Switch's upcoming release schedule still has plenty of gaps for the rest of this year, though yesterday's dual announcements of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl in November plus Pokémon Legends Arceus in January 2022 began to fill in the pieces. All eyes are on Nintendo now at E3 - and before it - for how the rest of 2021 will shape up.

We've contacted Nintendo for comment.

I've had this doscussion before but I dunno... something rubs me the wrong way about Nintendo releasing a Switch with JUST a better GPU and processor.

There HAS to be something else.

Eurogamer of "Pokemon Stars" Fame :D

I know I know this isn't a Eurogamer rumour but it's not suprising me that they're reporting it as a fact. Lessons not learnt

With the semiconductor shortage how would Nintendo be able to build enough inventory that quickly?

"In a recent interview, Nintendo president, Shuntaro Furukawa, confirmed that the global shortage of semiconductors is beginning to hamper the production of the Switch. With the technological recession biting hard, he admitted that the company may be unable to produce as many consoles as it would ordinarily like. 8 may. 2021" they probably have "enough" for this year, but next year could be sad 😢

they’re probably using an older process and producing chips equivalent to mobile ones in size.
I think they already went from 20nm (or was it 28nm?) to 16nm in their refresh a couple years ago. I hope to god they can go smaller than 16nm to meet production.

I'm guessing they'll go 12nm or 14nm, both of which actually won't give them too much headroom for improvement per watt, but we'll see. Sucks considering 7nm should be the standard by now, if not smaller. But such is the times.

Good rule of thumb with new Nintendo hardware is to expect to be doubly-underwhelmed. It works like this:

There is the current state of the art of mass produced tech, let's say a cut down mobile variant of Nvidia's 3000 series on 7nm.

Then there is a generation of tech BEHIND that.

Then there is what Nintendo will actually deliver, which is a big step back from that. So it will probably be a custom variant Tegra X2 with hopefully some modern bells and whistles, and for the love of god, some actual bandwidth this time. And they will be saving pennies on the dollar to go this route instead of something actually new and awesome, and yet they will do it this way.

They're basically using old Nvidia Tegra X1 (Maxwell GPU architecture) chips that are on the 16nm process (the chips that are facing the worst shortage seem to be everything from about 10nm and lower), wouldn't be surprised if they went for something like Xavier (which uses Volta architecture) because it'll still probably be dirt cheap, and it would sort of match up Nintendo's love for using older, cheaper (and more readily available) parts.

They wouldn't want to go for the super new SoCs from Nvidia because then they would probably end up having to compete (for supply) with car manufacturers using Nvidia's parts for their in-car entertainment and/or ADAS stuff.

Let them complain, when they get their 1080p, 2k or 4k screen they'll complain about it lasting only 2 hours before having to charge. We can't stop it, just ignore it.
But if we ignore them, how will they get their sense of self-important, smug superiority? They need that to live.

I very much doubt that. It's the games. I have 4 Friends that own a switch and not a single one of them has removed the console from the docking station even once. They all bought it, hooked up to the TV and that's it.

Yes, but you still pay for the Battery, Screen, etc. If they'd sell a "switch box" for 50$ less than the normal switch, or like slightly above switch lite price, I'd buy it.
I play in handheld mode while watching Drag Race. I also play in docked mode when I'm not watching Drag Race. So does my anecdotal evidence negate yours?

They will probably do a lame name like New Switch but if they called it Super Switch that would be pretty cool.

No, I never denied people using the Switch in Handheld mode. I know those people exist and greatly enjoy it and I don't want to talk this down in any way!

I'm just questioning the statement that handheld mode is the reason why this is the best selling console.

I want the new Switch, but I'll likely never play it in handheld.
Like maybe once just to try it, or twice if I'm really drunk one day and want to take a bath while playing videogames. Point is, I like to take a bath, drunk.

I don't like that price..

Needs to be below $300 if you're gonna phase out base Switch.

Phasing out the current Switch may not be the best idea IMO?

Don't they run the risk of this model being too expensive and not selling as well as the current Switch?

The Lite doesn't sell as well as the current Switch...

Either way this is the news I love to hear. Nintendo console news is always music to my ears.

Really hope this thing is as powerful as some of the rumors have suggested.
The switch is already overpriced I dont think it will matter

Agree.
This is pretty much for every rumor.

There's a difference between random Twitter people and Mochizuki. Mochizuki definitely has sources within Nintendo's supply chain.

What was the something else for New 3DS?

Finally, the Switch Pro now everyone can shut up denying it exists.

If that article is right and Nintendo announces it at E3 then it should be a pretty good show for them!

i bet people will just complain its not the Switch 2 while the systems keeps breaking records
