Bethesda’s Indiana Jones Could Be Developed On Unreal Engine 5

MachineGames is mainly known for developing the Wolfenstein series. It was announced in early January that a new Indiana Jones game is in development by MachineGames studio, which Bethesda will publish. Though still very little is known about the game, now a new job listing suggests that the game could be using Unreal Engine.

A new job listing suggests that the MachineGames is looking for Lead Level Designer to lead and mentor a team of level designers for their latest project, which is the Indiana Jones game.

If we look at the qualifications required, the development team is looking for a lead designer with knowledge and experience with Unreal level editor. The Level Editor is the core level creation tool in Unreal Editor, which could mean that the coming Indiana Jones could be using Unreal Engine or maybe the latest Unreal Engine 5.

Previously, MachineGames did remarkable work in the Wolfenstein series in tech 5 and 6. The developers may now switch to Unreal Engine with the recent trends in the gaming industry, where the majority of the AAA developers are changing to Unreal Engine 5.

Popular games like Stray, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Witcher 4, and upcoming games like Atomic heart all use the Unreal Engine, which shows how excellent and impeccable the engine is. As such, fans shouldn’t be surprised by the Unreal Engine capabilities.

but but Microsoft could not negotiate a deal with Epic to use Unreal Engine 5 with Day 1 Game Pass releases and hence forcing there devs to use in house engines! Its interesting that both Tango Gameworks and Arkane moved to Unreal from id tech, and now MachineGames.

As long as there are some other engines around, unreal will need to be great, but if this continues and no one pushes them, their evolution might grind to a halt.

The author of the article misinterprete that line in the job listing thinking it was evidence of them using unreal engine 5. When in reality they were asking for someone knowledgeable in any of these editors, because their skills will be transferable to Id Tech or whatever engine they are working with.
 
Hoping it's a new interpretation of Indiana Jones and not just based off Harrison Fords' likeness.
I bet for sure its going to be a representation of Ford in his prime. It’s not going to be like how In the Mad Max game it wasn’t Tom Hardy or Mel Gibson. Maybe Indy could find an artifact that makes him regenerate into a different actor like Dr. Who.

Until now MachineGames(the studio that's making the Indiana Jones game) used id Tech.

End of an era if more studios migrate off of Id Tech.

Id Tech was already not what it used to be when it went in-house to Bethesda, long after it gave up trying to be a middleware solution for licensing; also Carmack left and that seemed like it'd be the end of Id pushing/experimenting with game tech boundaries. But then Id Tech 6/7 in the two recent Doom games were still pretty damned amazing and showed the team still keeping the legacy alive. That would be in question again for me though if MachineGames went for another engine. (Not that this job posting confirms anything; it's more that if you're looking for staff, experience in UE would mostly likely be a translatable skill to look for no matter what engine the project uses. But it's always an accessible possibility when a new project starts, I would assume.) Having another developer using Id Tech must have helped continue to fund Id Tech development, and if Id is back at it alone in the company, that's harder pushing forward every time for just one studio. (Apparently Phil Spencer said that Id Tech might be available to Xbox Games Studios developers thanks to the Bethesda acquisition, but if even Bethesda studios aren't using it much, that seems like wishful thinking.)

When is this game supposed to release?
There's yet to be a word on when we'll get our hands on the new Indiana Jones game, but we're expecting it will be for a few years.

In a tweet announcing(opens in new tab) the game back in January 2021, Bethesda said, "it'll be some time before we have more to reveal", which isn't surprising given that the company is also working on Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 currently. However, since MachineGames and not Bethesda Game Studios are handling this, we won't necessarily need to wait until Starfield is finished.

At this point, we expect the game to release in 2023 as we near the end of 2022. Although it would be nice to get some news before the new year. It's worth noting that the June 2022 Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase focused on games launching "in the next twelve months." Because Indiana Jones didn't show, it seems very unlikely we'll see it until, at the earliest, the second half of 2023.

With Bethesda's parent company, Zenimax, now owned by Microsoft, we expect to see the new Indiana Jones game coming to PC, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S – however, platforms have not yet been confirmed.
