This sure has been an eventful time for us hobbyists. What's the absolute best train wreck, lulzy moment, or out of touch episode in recent gaming memory? I tried to pick the ones that stuck out in my mind most, but if there are any I missed, just inform me. Let's go.

I'm going with Saints Row and its probably only the beginnings of the shitshow given their responses to fans, obviously Halo got a strong negative reaction but at least they didn't turn round and say:

"Nah its in great shape WE'RE MAKING THE GREATEST REBOOT OF ALL TIME" :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Blizzard might be in its own league with what the poll has as options.

Cyberpunk was literally pulled from the Playstation store for being hyper broken after being delayed twice or thrice?

Voted Other - I think the mis-marketing of the Series S takes the crown.. having Jason Ronald explicitly say it will be the same experience albeit at a lower resolution, couldn't be further from the truth in hindsight.

From the list however - I would say Cyberpunk 2077, the reputation the studio had built up over the years to then throw all that goodwill away with a dismal release. Just shows how unforgiving the industry is.

The game seems to be getting a lot of hate, a lot of it undeserved. People complain there aren't enough indies on PlayStation, yet moan when they're presented with one.

Yeah, but it *has* been sort of a trainwreck. It debuted at the PS5 event, which pissed people off, then it turned out in was written by the chick who posts thirst articles on Kotaku about school age children fucking each other, which led to an entire reworking of the internal structure of development and a re-written script. I mean, all told, it'll probably come out better with these things in mind, but I might be jaded.

Wait, what?

Just Googled this and, yeah, yikes. At least they've got rid and re-written the story. I don't see why the entire videogame and it's developer should be held accountable and slammed for it, though.

Haha, I'm not slamming perse, just leaving the option for it. It's kind of a much smaller example of the troubles FFXV went through, and that one got Square put the ringer (rip in peace d.final)

I wouldn't call most of those train wrecks. Most are people who are desperately looking for something to be outraged overreacting, as is their nature.

Cyberpunk, obviously, was an exception and qualifies as a "train wreck".

The Hasan thing is...well I don't know if you can call it a trainwreck. I still think Kojima is behind this. I wear my tin foil hat to bed so he doesn't get into my dreams.

There is nothing bigger or worse than Craig, to think they went live with that, to think they were prepared to release that in its god damn awful current state speaks volumes.

To treat one of the most beloved franchises like that, to show it that level of disrespect, is shameful.

I don't know what this is.

There was a Kotaku review of the Xbox Series X by a now retired journalist who's entire shtick was she was black. Literally in her bio, mentioned in every article, like over the top stuff. And her professional product review was essentially a long winded Kotaku article of 7,000 words to state "I have trypophobia, this machine has too many holes," and the internet, being the collective Chad that it is, spammed her email with hundreds of pictures of objects with holes in them, and she proceeded to go on a victim tour assigning herself the same stunning and brave badge that people like Laura Bailey wore for getting actual death threats. I say it definitely qualifies.

Hard to choose, I enjoy just about all game industry bloopers and drama, though some are only funny in hindsight.

Serious answer:

Nintendo.

What a fuck up for us life long fans.

I bought my Switch for a big part expecting to play N64, GBA and GC games on their (how I foolishly thought to be introduced) VC store.

You know, a natural continuation from their Wii(U) eco system..

What a fucking let down. For real.

Cyberpunk 2077, it was practically all over gaming media and even mainstream media picked up on it.

Halo Infinites initial reveal was pretty bad as well. I mean, even Dominos made jokes about it on twitter.

Cyberpunk is the obvious answer but it still is the most interesting project / game of everything listed in the poll, by very very far

EDIT: Oh, recently? Cyberpunk

I have three picks. Three of the biggest games mired in controversy thanks to decisions (or complete lack of decisions) made by their idiot studio heads.

Halo:Infinite

After years of hype for the new game the gameplay trailer 343 put together was as lazy as the team's leadership. The Xbox Series console's feature attraction and clearly intended launch title (so much merchandise, everywhere) was delayed while the studio went into full send mode trying to get the game to a state they could release it. It ended up needing a year and Microsoft had to call in help from outside the studio. When Bonnie Ross surrendered the 2021 E3 stage to the guy that saved her game and it followed with a multiplayer trailer that not only looked good, but looked really fun, I actually laughed out loud. Things actually got to the point that hyper-feminist Ross needed to bring in a straight white male who worked on the original games to correct the ship. The gameplay trailer from 2020 was among the most disappointing and lazily made things I could imagine for such an important project and it really pointed a spotlight on the studio leads who were galavanting around doing side projects while they left the studio in the hands of a guy who had no idea how to run a studio and lacked any sort of leadership skills.

What they showed in 2020 resulted in this:

The Last of Us 2

The first game was universally loved. Anyone that played had something good to say about it and with 100+ million PS4s on the market the sequel would likely be one of the best selling games ever made. The second game released to about half the fanbase hating it and selling about as well as the typical Mario Tennis game. Some fans even had rational reasoning for disliking the game but they were immediately demonized by the other half of the fanbase. The studio head decided to make things worse, coming out swinging at fans who questioned his choices. Sony, used one of their shell corporation issued copywrite strikes against Youtubers who criticized the game before and after launch just like they did with No Man's Sky. In the end the "The Last of Us 2" subreddit became a place for fans of the original game who detest the new game to gather and shit on the other side who enjoyed the "misery and torture porn tied to the vision of a nu-male with a man-bun" that was The Last of Us 2. The game quickly went on heavy discount with images of pallets of the game selling for a fraction of it's retail price immediately after launch, one endcap picture that made the rounds that August had the game selling for $19.99 and the endcap was hilariously labeled with a BOGO card.

The game went on to be a staple on 4chan for the next couple weeks. Choke, Bite and Bonk were some of the more popular meme templates in 2020. Not quite Bowsette levels of popularity but there was a lot of original stuff to dig through. You might even recognize some of them from the Craig video above. This is but a small snippet of what's out there as new ones are still being made to this day.

Cyberpunk 2077

This was my most anticipated game for almost two years. I loved The Witcher III and though I admittedly played a heavily modded version of the game with much better combat and visuals, the world CDPR created was really beautiful and full of interesting things to stumble across. Over time people kept pointing out that the game was having issues. Features were missing, gameplay changes were being made late into development. The game ended up delayed which instilled new hope into the minds of people still excited for the game (me). What released was one of the least polished games ever released with such a budget. The base console versions were unplayable and only people with a PC had any chance of getting a decent experience with the game. Sony even pulled the game from the Playstation for being buggy, which was odd as they hadn't pulled other bug-filled games like No Man's Sky or WWE 2K20 in the past. Perhaps it had something to do with CDPR telling angry customers to get their refunds from Sony. Either way, bad choices net bad results. The studio in the end went back and completely fixed the game and it no longer has a single bug, oh sorry that's not quite right. They only said they did and then ran away with bags of cash laughing hysterically.

The game quickly had about a billion Youtube glitch compilations uploaded. This is what console players were greeted with on launch day.

Halo Infinite and Cyberpunk are probably the biggest disasters I've seen in recent times. They were so bad they damaged the brands and got ridiculed and raked over the coals in a seemingly never ending cycle. It was also surprising to see CDPR waste all of their good will they amassed over the year and destroy their reputation all in one fell swoop. And Microsoft treating their most well known and best selling franchise like dirt was baffling to say the least. I wonder what state the game was in considering Infinite was to be released last year, when it's not shipping feature complete this year.
