AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution is getting a lot of support

It took a lot of time for AMD to release its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). But now that it’s upscaling tech is well established in the hands of developers, AMD is taking the opportunity to proudly announce that there are now 71 supporting games either already released, or under development. AMD goes as far as to state that FSR has become “the fastest adopted software gaming tech in AMD history.”

A list of current and upcoming FSR supporting games includes some major titles, such as Far Cry 6, F1 2021, Resident Evil Village, Horizon Zero Dawn, Godfall, Deathloop and God of War. These are just some of the titles on a list that's growing rapidly, and it's certainly impressive given that FSR was only released six months ago.

AMD’s FSR aims to achieve the same thing as Nvidia’s competing, yet functionally different DLSS technology, which is to upscale game images to a higher resolution. The main difference between the two is that while Nvidia uses an AI-based temporal upscaling method, AMD’s FSR relies on spatial upscaling with no AI. This makes AMDs solution easier to implement. There's also baked in Unity and Unreal Engine support

Fsr is trash. Dlss and intels method will be the future. Fsr is almost putting renderscalet at 80% and sharpnestt at 90% works well from 2160p but below? No. Amd will loose their foot completely with their 15% WITHOUT intel in the business. But pc gaming in general is.

Intels method is on par with DLSS 2.3. You guys seem to forget that Amd AND Nvidia are tiny in comparison to intel. Intel enters in with 2080 TI performance . How long did Amd need to beat the 1080TI again? China is not even close to 1080ti at 250 watts after years. Intel has the manpower, money AND knowledge. The biggest issue will be drivers the first year. But if you bought RDNA 1 you know how terrible that was.

You've forgotten the quality of intel's display drivers thus far, haven't you?

Also, anyone remember Intel's I740? *raises hand*

tis would be great news... if FSR was any good... which it isn't...

for example, if you use FSR instead of the included interlacing mode in RE8 you are a bit dense to say the least

no, consoles are using more tricks than just spatial upscaling don't think any of the major aaa devs will downgrade from what they currently use.
Thats true. FSR is the most basic upscaling. Only need to look at something like RE: Viliage and that has better reconstruction method and is available everywhere. [PC + XBX + P5]

The AI super sampling and Tensor cores are what is needed, and I'm not so sure what kind of investments AMD has made within either. From what I understand, though, Intel is attempting to make use of OpenCL for their GPU's, the alternative to Nvidia's CUDA, which is something AMD could also make use of in a silent partnership to compete against Nvidia. Also, Intel's efforts within the deep learning space with XeSS, given their immense resources and capital, could pay dividends not only to AMD, but also to consumers as a whole.

To understand DLSS, I love to reference this video by Computerphile.

It's gonna be amazing with Steam Deck.
Highly doubt it. The more pixels you work with, the better the result. If you're trying to reconstruct from something like a 360p-480p image with FSR to 720p, it's going to look pretty bad. Probably no visible difference assuming it doesn't introduce even more artifacts/noise.

FSR and other upscalers like this don’t really work well with low base resolutions, so it won’t really help. It’s a 720p screen, so if you were to use it to get the resolution to 720 from a lower resolution it would look bad.

Someone mentioned Intels XeSS - we know it works work on the series consoles, has it been confirmed to work on PS5 too? That would be fantastic if it works on both because it would actually then be more likely to be implemented. Third party devs are unlikely to use it on console if they already have to make their own upscaler for one console, they’re just use that for both.

People are really salty about FSR getting support, come on guys, this thing is nothing but a benefit and people complaining about dlss are just being selfish.
DLSS-like method will eventually be the best option, but current implementation takes too long and too costly.
Just appreciate FSR for what it is.

No one is "salty", but you don't seem to realise why it "getting support" isn't actually a big deal. It's just a post processing upscaler. Most developers that use reconstruction methods already do it better than FSR does.

People are appreciating FSR for what it is - pretty irrelevant, but an ok "last resort". We don't need more post processing upscalers, we need smart ones like DLSS and XeSS. That's how you actually get good upscaling that allows you to render games at a lower internal resolution intentionally, saving resources, and letting the upscaler work its magic.

Its coming along nicely. One of the main points being that most people cant distinguish between full flat 4k and something runnign above the 3200x1800 range easily. Especially from a distance. Flat 4K at 30 fps is not necessary when 1800p or slightly lower might get to 60 fps.

Question is ; how quickly can be get this tech on consoles. That would be quite something else.

If you're putting it like that then you don't even need FSR for that - native 1800 vs native 4K most people can't distinguish between at a distance.

Hell, just buy an mCable. Always an antialiasing with barely any milliseconds lost and it will work on any HDMI signal.

Those other post process upscalers you are referring to, are they in the game settings menu or are they a third party mod?

Guys, let's wait until Intel GPU's and XeSS are on the market and then we can asses them. Until then, all is wishful thinking.

You mean like actually buying it? Please kind sir insert the spiderman meme from above here.

Intel gpu will cost a fortune and all cards will go to miners. Its almost on par with ampere in mining and 16gb vram. Nothing will change . 2026 is the year our company expects it to get better.

Consoles 2023 halfway in. As gpus shift to 6nm and 5nm . 7nm capacity will be available to push out millions of ps5s and so on in a short time. But pc gaming is fucked.

4k 30 equals a bit over 1440p(1500-1600p) for 60 fps same settings. Depending on the game 4k needs 85-100% more power than 1440p for 60 fps.
