Despite its past setbacks, Amazon is still trying to break into gaming. The company is opening up a new game development studio in Montreal, led by some of the creative talent behind Rainbow Six Siege, it announced on Tuesday.

The new studio will include head of production Luc Bouchard, creative director Xavier Marquis, head of product Alexandre Remy, and content director Romain Rimokh, who all worked previously on Ubisoft’s tactical shooter, Rainbow Six Siege. Unsurprisingly, with a team that’s heavy on multiplayer experience, the new Amazon studio’s first game will be an “online multiplayer title based on new IP.”

...we are excited to start with a blank page and the creative freedom to create a completely unique experience in the multiplayer space,” said Marquis in the company’s press release.

While Amazon has spent the last several years trying to push its way into game development, it’s had a rough go so far. The company’s biggest upcoming game is the colonization MMO, New World, which has been delayed a number of times, finally seems close to release in 2021. Meanwhile, its other high profile project, Crucible, never found an audience after its release and was eventually canceled.

Honestly, the more and more time passes, the less probable it seems for me for Google/Amazon/FB etc. to ever jump into the gaming industry - the entry point is simply so damn high, and they're like, expecting to make just 2 or 3 titles to join the club with Sony/MS/Nintendo, without even having an established, robust platform in the first place. They're basically asking people to pay for alpha versions of their services, with little to no content. IMO they should start as a 3rd party dev/publisher first and see the reception of their games on PS/XB/PC, build a brand and customers trust/loyalty, and then think about doing things completely solo, their way.

Very good point here. They can't just come in and say hi we're the new neighbors. Indeed, they might would need to set one foot in first and do their first step as a third party.

But that's the peripheral market, the same in which for example Logitech or Razer are. Oculus itself isn't a standalone platform like Playstation, Xbox, Switch or Stadia are, just an add-on to already existing platforms like PC. It's like saying that LG is in the cinema industry because their TVs play movies.

Just to point out. Oculus is a standalone platform. It has its own store and their most successful product doesn't even need to be connected to a PC (I.e runs standalone)

Awe! They deserve a star for trying. Amazon should really become a 3rd party. Too many decades of only 3 gaming companies - those have the knowledge, brand and target audience.
Amazon has none of it.

I don't think they'll stop trying.

There is still so much room to grow for this market. How many 50-80 year olds nowadays play videogames? How many will it be in 20-30 years when the old people grew up with games?

Facebook is already in with Oculus. Only a matter of time before Google/Amazon get some huge games and put them exclusive on their platform.
These are some of the richest companies in the world we're talking about, if they want in, they'll get in.
