After Nearly Six Months in the Next Gen, Anyone Else Finding it Hard to Go Back to 30fps?

Depends on the game? I don’t think Yakuza Kiwami 2 is 60 FPS on PS5 but it doesn’t feel choppy at all whereas I had a tough time playing God of War in Favor Resolution mode until it was patched: I stuck with performance mode at 1080p before that. Animation frames make a huge difference to me at least.

Every single game on PS5 that has a 60fps mode i plan to use it. After reaching at minimum 1440p image quality, framerate takes precedence over everything else including raytracing. Looking at you R&C.

Nah 30fps is OK for me, only weird when you jump from 60 to 30 but fine after a few mins.

Playing last gen games at 60fpa made me realise I am happy with graphics in general, don't need much better TBH (but I'll take it).

Then why should we make any advancements in graphics then? Heck, we could stop advancing graphics right now and just keep going higher and higher on the frame rates making every game look the same from now on.

Once I reach 60fps then bells and whistles become the focus. 1440p minimum 60fps minimum. 60fps games on PS5 look better than 60fps on PS4. 60fps games on PS4 look better than 60fps games on PS3. There has been plenty advancement.

I would argue that 30fps games on PS4 look better than 30fps games on PS3 and 30fps games on PS5 look better than 30fps games on PS4.

You find it hard just now? I've been finding it hard ever since playing Daytona USA and Ridge Racer in the arcades back in 1994.

Been playing at over 60 for decades
Nothing tough about going back to 30fps unless you are playing a first-person shooter online.

it's only jarring when you are in the middle of a 60fps game and switch that same game to 30fps.

Playing games at 60 fps for a long period of time has done this me. People who say, "well you've played 30 fps games before, what's the difference now?", have misunderstood what happened. It's the fact that I haven't played a lower framerate game in so long is what causes that emotion. Playing games at 720p wasn't an issue until I started playing games exclusively at +1080p. It's just difficult going back once you notice the difference and get used to it over a long period of time. The last 30 fps game I played was Death Stranding which was over 1.5 years ago. I went back to it recently and as soon as I panned the camera, it looked like a slideshow so I turned it off.

Not a problem.

Some 30 fps titles were very clunky and not really rock solid 30 fps... Just finished final fantasy 7 remake on 30 fps and it wasnt an issue at all.

The myth last gen was that 60 was basically not that different from 30.

I feel the prevailing myth this gen will be that there are declining returns after 60.

Fuck no, going from 120 to 60 is every bit as abrupt as going from 60 to 30.

I tried 244hz recently, and fuck me it was a clear, clear jump from 144hz.

I read an article once that the human eye can easily distinguish anything up to like 900hz.

That's why I'm forcing myself to stick to 144hz for now. I've got to draw the line somewhere or my wallet is fucked.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
yep, i can still play on 30fps but 60fps is way better, just complete Metro Exodus few days ago, damn 60fps with RT is so good.

Still nope for me. I jump between 120, 60, and 30 fps games all the time. It does depend on the game though as Control in 30fps for example is terrible. Meanwhile MH Rise at 30 was okay.

I've been telling my conse friends for years how much better 60fps looks and how 30fps looks like the game isn't running properly to me. They just said I was PC shill / elitist and that 30fps looks just fine and isn't a big deal.

Funny how now they have PS5's they say 30fps sucks and they can't play games in fidelity mode at 30fps anymore.

I get it, you have to really see the difference to understand why it's so hard to go back, but they simply refused to believe.

I can go back to 30fps, but I don't particularly like it. I won't ever play at 30 if there's a 60 version / option available.

Not a next gen thing at all.

I'm confident a reason why COD was so strong when it came to consoles is due to smooth 60 fps. Every other shooter on 360 and PS3 could barely do 30 fps. Didnt matter if COD textures were a little muddy, low res (I think the games bottomed out at 600p) and had no destruction like BF/BFBC games. It was all about smooth gaming.

I did my share testing shooters and they all felt like shit compared to COD. Gears was decent though as a 30 fps game it felt smoother than the typical 30 fps game. Not sure why, but maybe because it's slower paced or had lots of blur effect.

Same with sports and racers. Once you get a taste of how smooth something feels, its hard to go back unless the new 30 fps game is so innovative it's worth it.

But earlier this month when Sony gave out the 2014 Ratchet and Clank

Is this a separate Ratchet & Clank from the 2016 one that was given in March for the Play At Home event? I hope I didn’t miss out on a deal. If you meant the one in March though, I think I read that Insomniac put out a 60FPS update for it in March around the time it was given out.

No, I would frequently jump from PC to consoles for Battlefield, and while I would notice the visual and frame rate differences it didn't break the bank for me or anything.

I felt this way when I jumped to PC years ago.

But, I must admit, growing up with consoles and playing in 30 fps for many years has taught me to be at the least patient when a game hugs at 30.

Though most honestly, I wondered how it was even acceptable all these years to me.

What game is 30?

So far it's been performance/graphics and honestly I like checking them both out for a while esch.

I don't have issues with switching back and forth. I have played consoles and PC for years so going from PC to console during that time has probably helped me adjust better. There are certain games that I can notice but in general it never bothers me.

I can't play 30 FPS games anymore at all. Will be interesting how the biggest 30fps offenders will handle their big AAA releases this gen.
I can't limit myself like that. For example. MS Flight Sim right now. You're passing on it just because it is 30 FPS?

Consoles are so far behind the curve that didn't realize most pc gamers have moved well beyond 60fps. 60 is the bare minimum anymore. It's practically the new 30. The fact that people are still wallowing in the sludge of 30 fps is sad.

Gfx and fps are the biggest parameter that sell new hardware and on PC obviously that is more common with 500$ gpu is now considered mainstream :messenger_angry: I am sure this gen most games if not all will have 60fps option and especially with VR they will be targeting 90 or 120fps on consoles as well.

Yeah but remember the 360/PS3 generation where games ran at 20-25 FPS a lot? When PS4/X1 came along we were all grateful for stable 30FPS.

So does this mean next gen we’ll have 120FPS with G-sync TV’s and wondering how we ever “got by” with 60FPS? Lol

Not at all. 30fps is fine for most games. 60 is nice, but not required for most types of games - fast shooters and racing games being the main exceptions.

Make no mistake, most games so far have been 60fps on next gen consoles because they're just cross generation games made for the previous generation, so they can just bump up the resolution and framerate for the significantly more powerful consoles. As this generation goes on and leaves the PS4/XB1 behind, 30fps will again be the norm.

I literally skipped the entire PS4 generation because I hate 30 FPS, I'll get a PS5 at some point because they now give options for 60fps.
TBH even 60 isn't great, 90+ is when it gets good.

Bruh. I shit you not, until I moved to PC I never once paid attention to frame rate.

So the jump from PS3/360 > PS4/XB1 and improvements in frame rate went passer my head because my eyes were pleased mostly by the graphical improvement.

But idk about you, but I feel like 30 fps in PC is atrocious. But when I play a console exclusive, developers really nail 30 fps to feel smooth (eventhough it isnt).

Playing Ghost of Tsushima or TLOU2, for example, the 30 fps doesnt seem noticable compared to if I hit 30 fps on PC.

I never seen a PC game run nicely at 30 FPS regardless of genre. Its weird, but I guess when you're specialised for a specific hardware it makes sense.

60 fps on console as a standard feature is my most appreciated next-gen upgrade I go out of the box (ps5 user here). Hopefully even w/ future non-crossgen exclusive games we never go back to that slideshow that 30 fps is. It feels outdated. Or at least always make it an option so everyone is happy and all.

Since Day 1 on the PS5 I've had Performance Mode set as the default. Platinumed Astro's, finished 100% Miles in 60fps, and finished Immortals: Fenyx Rising in Performance. Also played about 2/3rds of the Dirt 5 campaign in the 60 mode (the game becomes a grind, play Wreckfest instead). On the XSX side it's likewise been entirely Performance mode, and now with the FPS boost I'm revisiting things I skipped last gen like Prey (which is amazing). I'm not even going to bring up the PC where everything I run is at 120+ fps.

But earlier this month when Sony gave out the 2014 Ratchet and Clank I figured I'd load it up and finally finish/platinum it before the PS5 game comes out in June...and it felt like a slog at 30fps. After being spoiled by next-gen and almost everything (looking at you Watch_Dogs: Legion) having a 60fps option, it's just not easy going back to 30fps gaming.

No flex: PC folks have been dealing with this issue for years now. It's bloody annoying and very jarring when you are busy with two games over the same period and it's a 30/60 situation. Especially action games at 30 fps. I just can't.

When I think about some of the games I’ve played at 60fps on PC that are 30fps console, it makes me glad I built a system instead of getting a PS4. Current gen consoles could bring me back.

Threads like this are good for the outside perspective, to show that it’s not elitism but rather getting used to something that is simply better. It is hard for some people to go back to 30 because it’s very choppy and takes more adjustment.

60 feels choppy after 144 and you can see the lack of smoothness, but it’s much less of an improvement than 30-60 and I can live without it when I’m playing on a TV (I don’t have a fancy new HDMI2.1 one).
