Animal Crossing has sold 26 million copies since its release, seven and a bit months ago?

That's insane. I guess if Nintendo wants to sell new hardware, make sure it has one of them at launch.

Not sure what is that when PSN alone makes more revenue that Nintendo and Xbox division combined? You know that 3rd party pay 30% as well.
That's wrong.
PSN revenue $12bn
Xbox revenue $12bn
Nintendo revenue $12bn

Also sou take higher profits every day of the week.

Where did you find that "higher profits"?
Nintendo had more than 1 billion profit last quarter?
I'm really asking, didn't find nothing about that.

Tbh If you want to include 3DS I would atleast get rid of Mario kart 7 as that came out 2011 and PS4/X1 two years later.

Sony had 1 billion profit just in the Q2 with PS (Sony Group had 4 billion in total).
Not sure where that graphic comes from.
What was the profit of Nintendo in the last quarter?

Sales wise, amazing gen for both of them.

We don't have any PS top sales, but they shared some numbers (Summer 2019):
Uncharted - 16.25M
Spider-Man - 13.2M
TLOU Remaster - 12M (20M total)
God of War - 11M
Horizon Zero Dawn 10M

Some unconfirmed numbers:
Gran Turismo Sport - 8M
Infamous SS - 6M
Uncharted Collection - 5.7M
Ratchet - 5M

They still need to update TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima and others.
Nintendo made around 1.4 billion usd operating profits in Q2.

Here is the total PS division operating profits during PS4 era in 2013 to 2020

In just half of those years from 2017 to 2020 Nintendo made around 8.7 billion operating profits while Sony PlayStation division made around 10 billion usd operating profits from 2013 to 2020.

So much for BUT EXCLUSIVE MATTER, exclusive sell consoles! For Nintendo, yes. It indeed does.
But for everything else: no, exclusive have never and will never sell consoles. Never.

Great games on a console with huge mind share sell well it seems. Fair play to Nintendo - the Switch is a great little console and a huge win and return to greatness for them.

Nearly every one of my Switch games is exclusive. Anything else is a double dip for portability with PC or Xbox being my other platform for them.

Source? But that's really amazing.
Sony getting 1 billion last quarter was really good, but it seems that Nintendo is dominating sales wise.

Btw, Pokemon Sun/Moon sold 16M. What's this "Pokemon SuMo(3DS) - 25.09M - 2016" ?

Most gamers have no clue just how dominant Nintendo is.

MK8 sold like 8 million copies on Wii U FFS. That should put it into perspective.

Nintendo gonna Nintendo. I find their games suitable for the enfeebled and medically retarded, but I admire their dedication to dancing to their own drum and can’t deny the success—and longevity—of them as a publisher.

I’m also shocked that no one at REEEEEE has attacked them yet for their “outdated portrayal of Italian Americans,” or their lack of a transgender Princess Peach. Probably next year.

It's certainly has a few drawback but it's pretty much working greatly for Nintendo, for example PS3 did more damages to Sony than WiiU to Nintendo thanks to that business strategy

Yeah but at that point they still had the 3DS to rely on.

Now all their eggs are in one basket, really. Which is great because they can finally produce a decent number of first party titles to support their main console, but risky because if the next console fails it's real trouble.

Basically their model is: produce some unique and compelling piece of hardware with some kind of central feature/gimmick (motion control or ability to turn a home console into a portable) that's interesting enough to get people to buy it, then sell shitloads of first party titles to that captive audience who have no other games to buy.

It worked brilliantly for Wii and Switch but was a disaster with the Wii U.

They either have to keep finding new gimmicks or hope that the Switch's USP is genuinely valuable to customers, and not a gimmick at all. I'm unsure on the latter point. To me, it's a gimmick. I buy Nintendo consoles because I'm a sucker and can't miss out on Mario and Zelda - I've never used my Switch except as a portable (it's too ugly to play on my big 4K tv). But then I'm clearly not their target market.

Oh, and they have to hope that if it's not a gimmick, MS or Sony, or both, don't enter the market and compete directly with them.

It's risky though because if their next gimmick fails, like the WiiU, they're completely fucked.

Why do people keep on insisting the Switch is a gimmick?

It's the best handheld on the market. Nintendo has total and utter domination in one segment of the videogame industry. No one is competing with them.

That's why it's going to be the best selling system of all time (as a family). People buy it *alongside* their home console or PC.

eah I mean you dont buy a swith to play Call of Duty or FIFA

Nintendos competitors are small indy games, so its a bit unfair to compare.
But good for them. Great hardware and software sales. They have a good strategy right now. Hope they keep going like this
No they aren't. They are stocked on the same shelves as PS4/Xbox games. The just outsell them multiple times

Noticing a pattern here. You don’t like Nintendo?
I don't really give a shit about either of the platform holders because they don't really give a shit about me as well (which is fine, since they're in it for the money). I do own a Switch and I like it. I also like my PC. And I also liked my PS4 systems (which I have sold). I might be getting a PS5 Slim down the line, who knows? To be frank, all of the systems I have owned weren't perfect and had flaws. Sony's biggest flaw in recent years has been build quality for me and their lack of interesting/strong first-party games. Nintendo's biggest flaw is still somewhat limited third-party support and Xbox's (or rather Microsoft's) biggest flaw is their focus on aggressively pushing their ecosystem and being hell-bent on locking consumers in. But I do like that Microsoft have remembered that Windows is a thing, so they keep putting their games on that as well.

I just enjoy shitposting with regards to the console war, that's all.

I don't think it was clear that the Wii was a gimmick until its successor failed spectacularly. Now nobody gives a shit about motion controls: it was clearly a gimmick.

The jury's out on the Switch - it may be a gimmick and it may not. It's certainly got some of the hallmarks of a gimmick. The very fact that it has no competition is basically proof that Sony, Microsoft and others aren't sure about the long term viability of the market. Once they are they'll flood in with their own versions, and Nintendo will be in trouble again.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. At the Nintendo head office, every worker has a litter of poodle puppies snuggling in a bed of money besides they desks, and their lunch is given to them byreplicant angels (a la blade runner) and consists mainly of a type of edible gold nintendo has developed in house

You really can't fault Nintendo, they do their own thing and have been massively successful over a very long period. Sure there's been ups and downs along the way but there is a real, proven and huge audience for what they do. If Sony or MS dropped out of gaming the other could fill the void. No one else could do Nintendo but Nintendo.

Due to the lack of games/variety from 3rd party, Nintendo relies heavily on its games.
This is true but not necessarily a negative thing. Might be negative for 3rd parties as their game sales usually pale in comparison but that also applies for some of their 1st party titles developed by outside devs like Platinum. Nintendo has a large core fanbase that tend to only buy Nintendo games on their platform. They also tend to own another console in tandem.

EDIT:
Also some things to consider are 1 hardware R&D as well game development budgets. Nintendo isn't spending 50-100M on 1 game. Now combine that with the fact that their first party games are still full price 3 years out....recipe for profit.

Like I said, I'm genuinely unsure.

Do you personally know lots of people who take their Switches out with them and crowd round them with their friends playing Mario Kart sessions? Personally I don't.

The people I know with a Switch basically just use it as either a handheld or a normal home console.

In which case I'd say the central feature is essentially a gimmick - but time will tell.

And even then, Nintendo has won recently effectively by avoiding competition via new and unique ideas (sometimes later to be found to be gimmicks). It can't do that by consolidating on one of those ideas and releasing iterative versions; it can only do it by repeatedly finding new AND successful unique ideas and thereby confounding its competitors.

You tell me whether you think that's a recipe for long term sustainable success. It basically requires them to be an order of magnitude more creative than their competition on an indefinite basis.

Having rooftop Mariokart parties with friends, doritos and dips is not the central feature. That was just an advert.

It's a handheld and a home console. You can play it sat on your couch, either in your hands or on the TV. That's it. Very simple.

Your argument is like saying the main feature of the iphone is it's camera, totally ignoring that most people use it for internet, whatsapp or pornography.

It's not like that at all.

The USP of the Switch is being able to take your home console on the move. Personally I'm not that bothered about that, mainly because it's not my main console. I use it exclusively as a handheld. If I couldn't play it on my TV I'd miss about 2% of the value I get from it. I honestly think they jury's out as to whether there's a large fundamental demand for that feature.

I think the Switch got off to a great start because of Zelda, and it built off that momentum by being a cool and unusual device. Plus, there's no doubt at all that Nintendo has some seriously popular software to back it up. But that doesn't NECESSARILY mean that it's a fundamentally desirable product, like the Iphone clearly was.

Honestly not trying to be rude, but what on *earth* are you talking about?

It's selling like fucking gangbusters. What other metric do we have for determining desirability?

It's doing well like the Wii. Tell me, what's the best modern motion control based console available?

Just asking cos I don't have one, and Wii Sports was such fun!!!

Still don't get why people obsess over sales. I mean if you like some of these franchise then it's obviously nice that they sell well because it means they'll continue getting support and possibly sequels. That's specially true if you are into more niche game (for example I'm happy Nier Automata sold so well)

Other than that though, who cares? Fifa Sells like 20+ million units almost every single year (and then makes bank with microtransactions). Candy Crush still made like $1.5 billion last year

So your logic is it's selling incredibly well like the Wii, but everyone will quickly get bored of it (despite the absolutely incredible software sales we're seeing) and then Nintendo will revert to type and release a Wii U.

So, presumably, the next iteration of Switch will be a failure.

It's amazing how well your first party titles sell when you lack third party support.

Take something like Spider-Man for example, released at a similar time as RDR2 and AC Odyssey. If it was a Switch exclusive it wouldn't have that third party competition.

Stop being a prick.

It's more like your logic is that the Switch's sales must be proof of the fundamental desirability of that type of console, whereas the Wii's sales are nothing of the sort.

Which is obviously completely incoherent. You should be a man and admit it, rather than trying to twist my words like a fucking coward.

I suspect you're a Sony fanboy that's wetting his knickers about a piece of plastic selling better than your toy.

Edit: Apologies for the language. Still have no idea what you're talking about or your definition of desirability.

Nintendo 1st party games need to compete against each other.

MK8D and ACNH will continue to sell and will be around 40-50M at the final LTD which is higher than any 3rd party games in this Gen except GTAV PS4 and XBO combined.

Zelda BOTW will continues to sell and will be around 30M at the final LTD which is higher than any yearly fifa games PS4 and XBO combined.

There's no doubt if sales were charted based on platform sku at the end of Switch Generation.

1. MK8D - 45M
2. ACNH - 40M
3. GTA PS4 - 35M
4. BOTW - 30M
5. Smash Ultimate - 27M
6. Pokemon SwSh - 24M
7. SMO - 23M
8. COD PS4 - 20M
9. BOTW 2 - 20M
10. SMP - 18M

This thread only shows how much strong Nintendo is, and how "hardcore" players like to (out of theirs own stupidity) downplay them. Keep hating, just don't forget that not every console they launch is a Nintendo 64, Sony won't obliterate them all...
