A Look at Japanese Game Sales on Steam - Spring 2017 edition [Steamspy figures]

*IF YOU HAVE GENERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT STEAMSPY NUMBERS, INCLUDING WHY SOME GAMES DROPPED IN OWNERSHIP, READ THE NOTES SECTION FIRST*

This is the latest thread in a series that I started in May 2016, examining the sales of Japanese games on Steam via Steamspy numbers.

I know that several people here are interested in the sales fates of Japanese games on PC for various reasons. While we often get threads based on the sales of a specific game or series of games, this series aims to provide a more comprehensive snapshot of ownership for both new and legacy Japanese titles.

The plan is to release thread updates once every 3 months or so. Since the Steam summer sale takes place at the end of June, I will likely release the next update thread in mid-July (a few days after the close of the sale).

Previous Threads:

Post 2016 Winter Sale: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1330871

SOME NOTES:

1) All Steam numbers below reflect total owners on Steam, as reported by Steamspy on March 23, 2016. For those of you not familiar with Steamspy, keep the following in mind:

  • these numbers are total owners on Steam and not sales through the Steam store specifically. Steamworks titles purchased on Amazon, Gamersgate, Green Man Gaming, the Humble Store, at retail, through key sellers, in bundles, or as promotions with video cards or other hardware are included in the figures.
  • The numbers are all approximate. If you go to steamspy.com you can see the confidence intervals for each title. E.G. 10.000 +/- 2.000 would mean 8.000 to 12.000 owners.
  • You will note that some titles seem to have lost owners since the last thread. This is typically due to the old and updated sales falling into the same confidence intervals. Since the last thread was a few days after the end of the Winter sale, it is possible that refunds had an effect as well in some instances. If the ownership number increased or decreased slightly from the last update, you can assume no significant change in ownership.
  • Low selling titles (under 30k?) tend to be less accurate than higher selling titles. Because numbers are approximate, I have rounded all figures to the nearest 1000.
  • Steamspy has a lag of about 3 days. Games that were released within the past few weeks, or games that were heavily discounted over the weekend are most likely to be impacted. NOTE: Nier Automata is a notable example in this update. Expect sales to be higher than what is currently listed.

2) I have listed games by Steam publisher with a few noted exceptions. Series with more than 2 entries have been separated to make comparisons between entries easier. Otherwise publishers are listed alphabetically and games are listed in descending order of sales/owners.

3) I know that games like DmC and Dead Rising 2 had western dev studios working on them. If a traditionally Japanese series had a few western developed entries, I included them for comparison's sake as long as the publisher funding the title was still Japanese.

4) I have tried to include all of the major and notable minor Japanese publishers/localization companies that I know of (the list below contains over 230 titles from 29 pubs). If I have made any glaring omissions, post the numbers below and I will add them to the OP. I omitted a few series (like Pac Man) on purpose as they differ widely in target audience from most other titles listed.

ADDENDUM: Steam has a billion visual novels. I have added some of the more notable titles based on requests in past threads. A small handful of these have been deleted due to no movement on very low ownership (<4k). If you are going to request more visual novels that even 95% of GAF is unaware of, please pick titles that have at least 10k owners. Also stick to games that received a retail release in Japan.

5) Free-to-play games, and retail games that have gone Free-to-play have been omitted. This means no Dead or Alive 5.

6) With a couple of exceptions, I left the Japanese indie scene alone. I am not knowledgeable enough to pick out Japanese indie titles from the Western indie devs making the same stuff, and I don't really think there is a meaningful regional difference between indie devs.

7) Thanks to Sergey Galyonkin for creating and running steamspy.com for all of our benefits.

FORMAT:

Ownership numbers from the last update (Jan 5 2017) for all legacy titles are listed in brackets. This will make comparisons easier if you want to look at sales/ownership growth. Please remember that Steamspy numbers are approximate. The website lists confidence intervals (+/-) or all games. If a game has dropped slightly in ownership, it probably had negligible growth between updates.

The format is as follows:

About newer high profile releases:
Amazing Nier Automata sales. Looks like day and date is the key to success.
Also, Tales of Berseria seems to had a good retention rate contrary to the belief that japanese game sequels means instant drop.

Sequels usually sell more than the original or improve sales in some way while it is the exact opposite on Steam for some strange reason.

Care to bring an exemple ?
Cause Tales of Berseria or Final Fantasy XIII sequels sure did dropped in sales compared to previous entries.

Berseria doing better than I thought. It's a good game, it deserves it.

Nier Automata doing WAY better than I thought. Wish the port was better, but official patches are on their way, so yay for that.

Tales of Berseria seems to have sold the same amount (or near) that Zestiria did in the same timeframe, right? Seems pretty good.

Still haven't bought Nier :(

Not recently, no.

I think there has been at least one update to the estimation methodology in the time period that could account for some of the fluctuation.

Such a big drop for each subsequent NepNep game. I'm guessing that for many, myself included, the novelty wears off pretty quickly. Not that Nep 1 was a bad game, it was quite enjoyable.

Same for Higurashi.

162k for Nier starting off is pretty crazy good. I predict that this title will go very far on PC.

Thanks for making these threads by the way. Even if they do have some sad results.

I do notice that it appears that publishers have finally slowed down on the backporting releases. Now that the release cycle is starting to return to normal, we should see more successes in the future as more modern titles release day and date.

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - 254.000 (213.000)
Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC - 40.000 (37.000)

Still makes me sad. I may refuse to buy it on PC because of PSP/Vita getting dropped but I do still want to see it do well.

I think we can safely say that Nier Automata will easily hit 1m soon, right?

It's amazing that they and From listened to an online petition and actually did it. Sure, it was a bad port, but I guess that's better than nothing.

Durante deserves a big fat check for his contribution too.

Thread is a goldmine, hah.

Does namco even release PC games? Outside of maybe some pacman games in the early 2000s?

Sadly not atm.
In 10 years when you can perfectly emulate a 360 or ps3.

I prefer the online functionality of Xbox live thank you very much.
This one got what he/she wished for.

As much as I want this to happen (and I got a two week ban port begging for it so I reallllllllly want it) I doubt it would sell enough to justify the port costs.

I don't want anything to get in the way of the success of the series. Experimenting with a new platform right now is a waste of time. The game is fine on consoles. I want the team spending time starting on the next game.

From doing a PC game? lulz

This is like the ultimate port begging thread or something? Just seems stupid to me.

I won't bother simply because it'll never happen. Even if it's ported it will result in poor sales due to "piracy", and not because the game was released on console 2 years earlier (by the time it's released).

And, of course, this gem

Care to bring an exemple ?
Cause Tales of Berseria or Final Fantasy XIII sequels sure did dropped in sales compared to previous entries.

There are probably as many examples of sales improvement for sequels on Steam as there are on consoles. People just forget the games that flop or have slightly lower sales, because they tend not to get press releases.

Great thread! The numbers seem great. Japanese publishers must be kicking themselves for ignoring PC for so long.

I always thought it's foolish that Capcom doesn't release the Ace Attorney games for Steam. It doesn't affect me since I own a DS, 3DS and Switch (if they take that route) but I think a PC port of each new game would make the series be more solid financially for them.

Danganronpa numbers depress me and the Last Remnant shocks me. I've not heard about a single person talk about that game, ever.

Why? The numbers are so good that Spike is porting the upcoming v3 sequel day and date with the PS4/Vita versions.

I guess they could be better, but they're some of the best selling VNs on Steam right now.

Danganronpa results are actually really good, it had a strong week one performance. The lack of sequel dropoff highlights a strong fanbase. Not to mention they bundled the two games together at a discount to help sales, something more companies should try doing with games in a series.

There's a reason why DRV3 was announced for PC so far ahead of time, and is coming day and date with console!

I've been asking Capcom to put Ace Attorney on PC for years. :(

Of course there is, but then again, no exemples were brought to explain how "console sequels always improve while on PC, they drop". :p

Square-Enix is pretty good about timely sales discounts outside of their Final Fantasy games, which they treat like catalog titles and don't price drop outside of a few 50% off sales a year.

I fully expect Nier Automata to end up between 200-300k at full or near full price, and then eventually break the 500k barrier a year or so from now. It's trajectory reminds me of Dragons Dogma last year.

Really hope Nier numbers make Square reconsider their Japanese games strategy on PC

Estival Versus numbers look are a bit disappointing though, XSEED haven't had a good launch in a while

Really happy with those Nier numbers, and it's still climbing quite quickly.

TLR actually has a fairly decent following on PC. It's by far the best version of the game, and there are workarounds for some of the technical problems it has.

It's also been discounted a lot, hence the higher numbers.
