Is Microsoft now forcing 8.1 users to upgrade to Windows 10? Please help me!

Okay, so I also posted this in the Windows 10 community thread, but seeing as that's in Community, it probably won't get answered, so I'm making a thread here in the hope of getting some help for my situation. Well, here goes.

A Windows 10 upgrade popup just appeared on my monitor telling me to either upgrade now or upgrade later*. I'm on 8.1 at the moment and don't want to upgrade yet, so I clicked on "Upgrade Later" hoping to dismiss the dialog, but nope - it then presents me with an EULA screen, then downloads some files to the Win10 upgrade pack. Now it tells me that I have to choose a date for the upgrade, even though I wanted to delay that to a later date (sometime after the rumoured December update, which is supposed to fix a lot of issues). How do I stop this? Please help me, if you can!

Had this happen to me (and my mother rang me the other day panicking because it happened to her):

Just set the date and time for install, an hour before it happens it will notify you and you can tell it that you don't want to install now. At that point, it tells you you can manually install it from Windows Update and stops nagging you.

Thanks for all the helpful replies so far. I really appreciate all your advice. Especially this:

Righty-ho, will do. Thanks for the help!

But I've calmed down a bit since I posted the OP, and I realised that I will have to upgrade eventually, and this is an opportunity to do so. So, I want to ask you all - is there any reason why I should NOT upgrade to W10 right now? Any glaring issues still present, like driver conflicts or the like? I'm aware that none of the programs on my C: drive will be affected, so I'm not worried about that, but are there any precautions I should take if I do decide to go ahead? I know that's a lot to ask, but this is a big step for me - it'll be like getting a whole new PC, except not! Am I being too melodramatic? Chalk it up to having just woken up, no breakfast yet.

Anyway, any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Load a system restore from before you hit "later" and then just close the window when it pops up?

The only problem I have on Win10 is sometimes my desktop icons rearrange themselves after a reboot. That's it.

Nope, it's solid. I'm running a five year old laptop with an SSD and Windows 7 - 10 transition was smooth and ive had zero issues since installation.

I'm sure you'll always find someone whose had a bad time but if there's Vista like horror stories floating round I've yet to hear them. I don't frequent many community chats for stuff like this anymore though.

If you're using a laptop you may experience issues with sleep/wake. I'm personally holding off on my desktop for a while longer, but I do intend to update eventually.

Thanks, everyone, I've decided to delay upgrading for another three weeks at least. I'll decide whether or not to finally do it before Christmas hits.

Just so I know, is there a way to roll back to Win 8.1 through Win 10 itself while keeping my settings? I have the Windows 8.1 installation disc that came with the machine, but using that would wipe everything off the C: drive, right?

Windows 10 offers a super easy option for some weeks.

you can roll back after the install without problems within the first few weeks I think, after that they delete your old install.

So... upgrade already?

I could understand if you were in in windows 7. But you have Windows 8.1.

Windows 10 is basically Windows 8.2, 99% the same, so... do it already.

Windows 10 is the future of Windows and PCs. It is time OP to join us! Now let loose your inhibitions and drag that mouse to install now. You will be amongst our tanks brother, all hail windows 10 the saviour from the tyranny of Windows 8!

Just popped up for me (Win 7), its was a trick. The "upgrade later" actually means "download files now and force me to commit to an upgrade date"

I closed the window and that sent it away, but I swear one day they'll just force the upgrade on me.

There were some issues with Windows 10 causing Laptop screens on certain Alienware and Clevo (aka Metabox, Sager, about 50 bajillion others since it's one of the boutique base brands) builds with higher end NVIDIA graphic cards to be killed (it required flashing the screen firmware and a semi-permanent hardware mode to fix). I think this eventually turned out to be associated with a certain 3rd party overclocking tool though.

I've also heard it causes some compatibility issues with certain GOG games but they are actively being worked on.

Not to mention the privacy issues.

I upgraded yesterday after months of waiting it was saying it finally was ready of all the software and hardware i have. And have to say it works very very good and everything on 8.1 to 10 has been on the same place.

Most people probably have smooth transition to Windows 10 but there is software and drivers that won't work in Windows 10 even if they work in Windows 8.1. Forcing an upgrade would be unacceptable from that point of view.

And for the people with limited skill set, there's a chance you will end up with a computer that doesn't work properly. I have pretty common hardware and I had to download and re-install graphics and audio drivers after the upgrade. Windows usually offers some drivers that should work but for my sound card, it had nothing. So again, forcing an upgrade would be unacceptable.

We'll see what happens before the free upgrade period ends but Windows 10 isn't the trouble-free experience Microsoft wants it to be..

Last time I checked, Nvidia drivers weren't optimised on Windows 10.
So I still haven't upgraded.

I wonder how it is for GTX970/980 etc owners right now.

Fine? I can't find any benchmarks that show any difference between them.

It's really nice of Microsoft that they haven't bothered me with the update yet. The little windows icon is still the same as it was when it appeared.

Happened to my mum's laptop. My Dad installed it, the wifi wasn't working. Something to do with the driver. I tried searching for an update. Got nothing, went back to the previous version of windows she was running.

Whoa?! O.o
Thx for the replies guys :)
I guess its time to upgrade then!

780TI user and I've had zero issues

980 user. No problems at all

780 user here..no problems dunno where you get that from.

It was actually on this forum. Forgot which thread though.
But looks like I have nothing to worry about now.

Took me a whole day of fiddling to get Fallout 3 to run on my PC, upgraded a few days later and now it doesn't run anymore. But that's literally it, no Fallout 3. Everything else runs fine.

I wish they extended the free upgrade to Vista users too.

My laptop runs fine, but Vista support end in 2017 I believe and I hear Win 10 is a great upgrade on old Vista machines like my laptop.

But I ain't dropping $90 on Win 10 for an 2008 laptop.

i dont know why you even would want to stay on 8.1? Windows 10 is a pretty damn great experinece so far, it looks and feels like windwos 7, but with better technologie behind it, as far as i can tell

That sounds like juggling with a live grenade and putting the pin back in.

Most Vista system don't have the resources to run Windows 10.

Microsoft virtually shoved Windows 10 at me on my Windows 7 machine yesterday. I had to decline a bunch of stuff to avoid installing it.

Leave me alone, Microsoft. :(

Whoa, I had that same screen yesterday and almost chose "Update later" as I thought it's the same as in any other program and it would just be essentially only a cancel button.

Just as I was about to click on it, I had a weird tinfoil conspiracy feeling and thought I have to go with the X on the upper right corner in case the "update later" button is something that forces me to update. Didn't really think that would ever happen, but I clicked X and have felt stupid for doing that until now :O

s Microsoft now forcing 8.1 users to upgrade to Windows 10? Please help me!

Click "upgrade now." Boom. Done, you're welcome.

"BUT WINTER UP--"

You won't get that right now anyway. Might as well be on the latest and then wait with the rest of us to force that because MS's rollout system sucks. When joke InfoSec accounts are telling you to upgrade to the latest OS, maybe you probably should?

Can't you upgrade to Windows 7 for cheaper and get a free Windows 10 upgrade from that?

I'm on Windows 7 and get regular pop ups begging me to upgrade to 10 for free, for a limited time only! Creepy and annoying

Whoa?! O.o

Depends on whether you are fine with your applications phoning home, keylogging and other stuff. Even if you activate all the privacy options, it still happens.

I'm just gonna stay on Windows 7, not like there is any reason to switch anyway.
